Has there ever been a WrestleMania where the IC title hasn't been defended? There wasn't an IC title match on the actual WM card for WM 12, but I believe the match was on the Free For All before the PPV began. I could be wrong with that information, though. Anyway, just wanted to point out what I think is an interesting note in WrestleMania history - The IC title will NOT be defended for the first time.

The finals of the WWF Tag Title tournament were on the Free For All, where the Bodydonnas beat the Godwinns. The IC Title was given the night off at that event.

I guess it's that way this year, too.

And don't forget last year too. Unless you want to count Triple H defending it against Booker T.

Wasn't Goldust the IC champ at WM 12? If so, that's why it wasn't defended. He had the Backlot Brawl with Piper.

And I had already forgotten about last year, but it had been "retired", so that doesn't count.

Wasnt WM IV a tournament for the world title, and no other real matches? Or were the other matches so bad, I have erased them from memory?

Plus there was the Ultimate Warrior vs. Hercules Hernandez, and Bobby Heenan and the Islanders vs. The British Bulldogs and Koko B. Ware.

And Demolition vs Strike Force and a 20-man Battle Royal. Tournament + 5 add'l matches = 18 potential matches. We ended up with 16. There should be little fear of MSG burning out this year. :-)

I just wish they would try and bring back the credibility the IC title had...of course, that could be said about a lot of the belts in circulation these days. And I also wish that they would get the Reggie Parks blocked style IC belt (Savage-The Rock) too...that and the Winged WWF title were the best.

Well, if it's any consolation, the U.S. Title will be contested, so I guess we can get our fill of midcard belt action through that avenue. I know it's not the beloved IC Title, but still.
Oh BTW...has the U.S. Title ever been contested at WM? That's something new, if not.

The only switch I could see next week is if Orton drops the belt to Jericho, but that would just hurt Orton's momentum and push Jericho just a tad. I could see them doing a program after the Foley stuff is finished, though.

Nope, this is the first WM since they reintroduced the belt, and the old WCW U.S. belt got assimilated into something before 18.

Edge beat Test at Survivor Series '01 to combine the US title (which he already had) with the IC title, and then the IC title stuck around.

Later that night, Test won immunity.

Actually, it was Angle who was the IC Champ for WM 2000. He was the EuroContinental Champion and lost both belts without being beaten in the Two Fall Triple Threat Match. To this day, I've wondered why the IC Title was defended in the first fall of that match.

Well, Randy could lose the belt to just about anyone before Mania and it wouldn't have to hurt his momentum. Suppose he drops the IC belt, it doesn't have to be clean. If he drops the strap, let's say Jericho, it could be because of some kind of interference on Foley's part. Randy doesn't lose clean, so his momentum isn't hurt. Jericho brings the belt to his match with Christian at Mania, which makes that match more important. With Randy all pissed about losing the belt, it advances the feud with Foley and gives added heat to their match. And it establishes possible angles for Orton, Jericho and Christian in the near future after Mania. Everybody wins.

This isn't meant to be fantasy booking so much as it is just a hypothesis for working an IC title match in Mania that wouldn't be useless to the current storylines and such.

So sayeth Randy Stilton.

So they could end the match with babyface Jericho winning instead of heel Benoit.

Seriously, wrestling promos on Benoit are worthless. Most fucks doesn't mean you're the most disgusted by Chris Benoit committing murder. Call me crazy but I think everyone agrees that's indefensibly horrifying. It kind of goes without saying.
