I know the crowds have a tendency to turn on Rock, but I always thought that the Toronto thing was just as much a product of his on-again, off-again thing with Hollywood.

We saw that again in the Summerslam match with Lesnar and then on the Raw 10th anniversary, where he accepted an award via satellite.

Asteroid Boy -- I truly believe it was more that Toronto was more pro-Hogan than it was anti-Rock. I'm sure the Hollywood thing was coming to a head at that point, as it would for any large crowd, but judging by the reaction there, it was more a pop for Hogan. It was an incredible reaction, where the PPV telecast and DVD didn't do it justice.

Further proof of that was when Raw was in Toronto last year about a month before Mania (the one where Booker T wins a battle royal). Rock was getting cheered like crazy, even though he was supposed to be a heel. Though honestly, can you blame anyone? It was an awesome gimmick.

Did WWE diva Molly Hardy have elective surgery? Are Y J Stinger and Tritch really 'just friends'? Is Triple HHH holding back wrestlers by getting them all fired? Yes, yes and yes, all in the latest Inside The Ropes!!!

How about Hogan vs Pete Rose? Let Rose come out & abuse the crowd like he did at his first Wrestlemania, Hogan comes out, boot-legdrop-pose outta here...

Hulk Hogan has had several high profile "goodbye" and "Thank You" matches.

The only reason why Austin would get booed over Hogan would be because Austin has been on TV in a non-wrestling role for weeks while Hogan would be just returning and would seem "fresh."

I think the crowd would be into both, personally, like Hogan vs Warrior. They would be lucky to see a match the caliber of Hogan vs Austin at WM, instead of the borefest the top of the card looks to be right now. Hogan vs Austin is a real main event. WM is really lacking one.

You're right, I can't chalk up that Hogan reaction to just an anti-Rock pop (like the kind Lesnar got in Summerslam).

What really interested me about that match is the crowds heat on Rock. And then, they inexplicably cheered him when he hit the people's elbow on Hogan. Not everyone, of course, but quite a few.

It doesnt matter why he would get the pop over Austin, Hogan would get it because he's frieking Hulk Hogan. Right after he won the title again Raw was here in St Louis, Hulk comes out with the belt, and the crows goes apeshit. Cant argue with sucess, even when he was a heel in WCW, he got face pops.

And, saying he wouldnt put anybody over is silly. He put over Kurt and I seem to recall Brock smearing Hogan's blood across his chest as well.

The pop Hogan got in Toronto two years ago was unlike anything I've ever seen, not just in wrestling, but unlike I've ever seen anywhere about anything. I've never seen so many people in one place so happy to see one person in my entire life. It was thrilling. As far as I understand it, they had two matches planned for the night, and which one they went with in the ring would depend on the crowd. One option was that Hogan would stay heel after the match, and the other option was for a face turn. Hogan was so over with the fans, there was no choice. So it was decided mid-match that Hogan would have to start "Hulking up" and doing his poses and his old hand-to-the-ear gesture, with Rock getting in on it, too, to save face and not have Hogan go so far over him that Rock's heel turn would be unduly accelerated.

I was there, and I have to admit that while Hogan isn't my favourite wrestler, I did love the guy when I was kid, and yes, it was a nice bit of nostalgia. But that pop was so infectious. It actually felt good, like good drugs good, to pop for the man. It felt right.

If WMXX is meant to be this industry landmark, Hogan should be there in some respect. Wrestling or not, the fans are going to pop for him. He's like the allegorical figure of professional wrestling. He's symbolic of the whole industry. He might have a shitty legdrop, but it's hard not to pop for the man who's been synonymous with the business, and its rise to mainstream popularity, for the last 20 years.

While I don't necessarily disagree with your statement, as I think Hogan would get a pop no matter what (Over Austin? That's questionable.) Hogan was not always a success in WCW, especially as a heel in 1998. In fact, as we got into 1999, Hogan was in several segments that tanked in the ratings (with the occasional minor success) including one high profile match against DDP on Nitro that dipped to a new low for even Hogan.

Pop != success.

Hogan was successful in WCW for a period of time, but he got so successful that Bischoff & Hogan let it get to their heads and it cost them dearly in the latter half of 1998, and even for the rest of Hogan's career. Hogan made one last big comeback in the WWF in 2002, but within just a few months was doing poorly in the ratings and made minimal impact. I won't deny the pops, but that isn't everything.

Excellent post, Stilton.
You just described how it felt when Mick Foley won the belt on a snowy night in Worcester in December of '98.
It was a high. You just had to feel happy for the man.
Also, when the breaking glass hit for the Austin run-in, who nobody expected to be in the building, EVERYBODY jumped to their feet in celebration. It was pure unanimous joy.
(It's on the new Foley DVD, blurred logos and all)
I was there this January to witness the Patriots win the AFC Championship. As great as that was for me as a fan, it just didn't compare to that wrestling moment. Who'd have thought a fake sport could evoke such intense joy and passion?

That's just the power of good story telling. It's less about competition and more about narrative. Hogan might never have been a great wrestler in the technical sense, but he's always been an incredible story-teller, and that's what took him to the top.

The only pop I have ever seen bigger than the one for Hogan on a RAW I was at, was Prince.

ANYHOW, whoever said POP = Success, I disagree. A POP to me, is a crowd going apeshit when they see, or hear you.
When the WWF was in the tank, Undertaker was getting huge pops. But, the product wasnt successfull.

Chances are Hogan will appear as a ref, or be involved in a impromtu angle/match somehow. i just can't see them doing this without Hogan. Besides, I think if Hogan wasn't invited/couldn't come to terms, then he would have already popped up on TNA. Ideally, I believe Hogan will be there, and the pop/ovation he receives at MSG will be one of the most legendary, talked about moments in WWE history

More likely, McMahon will say he wants a piece of Bischoff at Wrestlemania (unfinsihed business) and Hogan will be the guest referee. Of course, this will lead him to give both men the big boot and the leg drop. Five minute match, five minutes of Hogan cleaning house and five minutes of the pose down/ripped shirt. Crowd goes absolutley nuts (especially seeing Vince and Eric getting leg dropped) and Hogan gets his final farewell as a wrestler.

Throw that in somewhere in the middle of the card and it would blow the roof off the place and make up for a shitty match.

If Hogan didn't get his yellow panties in a bunch, he'd be on WrestleMania XX but he miscalculated and he's missing out on a major moment.

I may be putting my foot in my mouth here, but I genuinely think Vince has no plans to let Hogan be involved with WMXX. There's been nothing to point to any kind of involvement, Hogan's TNA bookings-long thought to have been used as leverage-have led to nothing, and Hogan's gone on record with a face-saving excuse of "my knee rilly hurts, brutha". I have no issue with him not being there. He's had two great WrestleManias in the past two years, and they probably shoulda saved the Vince/Hulk match for XX, but that train has sailed. There's nothing there for him, aside from Hogan/Austin, and even that holds so little appeal these days, as it's basically non-wrestling cripple Vs. guy who's been around twenty years. There's no vitality, no energy behind it.

Then again, this is coming from the guy who believes they should've flip-flopped Foley with Goldberg back in December and done Brock/Foley and Orton/Berg, so my opinion may not be all that valid.
