With regards to nu-metal, I don't really care for it, but if that's what you want to listen to, go ahead.

However, it was the comment that "punk is back" that really got me thinking. How can punk be back? Punk rock was about a time, a situation and an attitude that cannot be repeated. Even by the end of the 70's punk music was called "new wave." And by the time the 80s were in full swing it was "post-punk" or "college rock." The music of Devo or Echo and the Bunnymen is closer to punk in spirit than bands like Blink182 or Good Charlotte that get called punk.

But there are bands that are definitely punk-influenced that are popping up. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Flogging Molly have that raw punk feel, but I'm not sure how to classify this type of music. I mean, just plain old rock n' roll works fine, but the time will come when DJs will need to say what they are playing, and to say punk is back isn't quite accurate. What should we say? Am I just thinking too much about this on a slow work day?

Punk, true punk never really left I'd say. It started back with MC5, The Stooges, hell even the New York Dolls and it still continues today. Whether it's a true punk rock sound or just has the punk rock spirit it's definitely huge in the local/indy scene pretty much where ever you go.

From a standpoint of punk being popular, I'd say that happened twice. First was the post-disco Sex Pistols era and then again when pop-punk bands like NOFX, Green Day or Blink 182 came on the scene in the early 90s.

As for nu metal, much of that stuff is unlistenable...I guess that's the case in every genre you have but it just seems there's a lot more shitty nu metal bands out there.

Nu metal is awful, a bunch of whiny rich kids from sunny Jacksonville Florida or Orange County California, singing over and over about how your life is a mess because, daddy brought home Jelly roll donuts when you really wanted glazed; its pure comical when they get pissed and start sounding like the cookie monster.

Old Punk, well I just wish people could separate far left politics with musical talent. if you sound that bad, I don't care if your anti corporate. At least they were sincere in their beliefs, and I can respect that. I can't respect no Good Charlotte.

What I hate here is the fact that along with shitty nu-metal bands (Godsmack, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, etc...) actual good ones get hurt by the fazing out of this "fad" as well. The Deftones and to an extent Non-Point are very talented, yet their last albums performed poorly because of this trend. System of a Down is "nu-metal" and is very talented.

I just hate how genre labels mean more to people than the actual music.

I have to agree astrobstrd, I've never been a fan of labelling anything. The other thing I hate (tho a bit off topic) is people who love a band until they make it "mainstream" and then stop loving them because they "sold out" even if their sound hasn't changed.

Back on topic, clearly I don't pay attention to labels b/c I didn't even know what "nu-metal" consisted of (thanks for the examples, ab!) I have to say I am probably one of the few people I know who like LB (I understand people not liking Fred Durst, though) and I also like Disturbed, System of a Down. So I guess maybe I do like nu metal? lol. However, I just couldn't get into the Deftones at Summer Sanitarium this year...in fact, out of all the bands, I thought they were the worst. The lead singer seemed way out of it to me. Do I need to give them another chance??

I haven't had a chance to see Deftones live (though I have heard live tracks), but from what I've heard, they require a very specific sound set-up to sound good and when they play with other bands, it isn't very practical to alter all the boards and equipment. Cheno also has a habit of binging on drugs periodically. Was he fat or thin when you saw him :)? I would highly recommend White Pony and Adrenaline. Their other albums are good, but these are the best of the bunch. White Pony takes quite a few risks that pay off very well. Adrenaline just straight out rocks.

Maybe, I guess what I'm sick of is scenesters and musical elites decrying a scene or band as dead as soon as anyone but them knows about it. I was thinking of writing a mock musical review for a satirical paper a friend of mine used to publish, where I would begin by praising a band, but hate them by the end of the article for being too well known now,

the thing that always annoyed me about "nu metal" is that while many many bands in many many generes have been attached to the "angst-filled, rebellious teen", nu metal is just so boring and obvious in it's delivery.

it all seems to be in the lyrics; Bart Simpson once said "depressing teenagers is like shooting fish in a barrel", and the problem w/ nu metal is is that most of those bands tend to rely on obvious, uncreative lyrics, (i.e. instead of using creative double entrandes, similes and methaphors to descrive your pain, all we're hearing is one thousand different adjectives to talk about how life sucks, i'm in pain, etc.) and think that they have to have these boring ass loud, mean sounding riffs to put over the fact that "dammit, we're angst filled".

plus, w/ bands like limp bizkit, how am i supposed to believe fred harping about that girl who dumped his ass 10 years ago when i constantly see this guy on TV smothered in attractive women and looking every bit like a guy who's getting laid constantly?

and linkin park....... no offense to their fans, but that is one of the most sterile, bland, and mediocre bands ever, and i have decided this from the almost brainwash-level amount of plays they get on my local rock station.

Some groups are going to be bad, some aren't. I am not a fan of pop-nu-metal, and pop-punk in a lot of cases. By pop I don't mean their overall sound, I mean them being "popular" and getting played to death.

As for Nu-metal being whiny, well yeah a lot of them are, but odds are that a lot of them were influenced by grunge, which was pretty much fueled by angst.

Do I hate Nu-metal? Some of it yeah. But it is a stagnant genre, but a lot of genre's do get stagnant after awhile, it's kinda a given. But if a band comes out in a genre and they are fresh sounding they sorta make a sub-genre, or a sub-sub-genre. This cycle can repeat ad nauseum. And because things get lumped together by radio stations, and MTV and whatnot well good stuff can get lost in the shuffle of a lot of acts just by sheer market glut.

Will offer some stuff I like that fits into these genres, and if you don't like 'em that's cool.

Five Pointe O - More metal than Nu-metal, their lyrics are a bit transcendental, and the lead singer seems intent on blowing out his voice on many of their songs. On Roadrunner Records, and one of their overlooked little nuggets of joy.

Lostprophets - Dunno why, but they're catchy, and kinda honest.

Chevelle - Okay they got famous on their, good, second album, but go to their first album, Point #1, which was a kinda indy in it's vibe, definately it's label, and hinted at the anger on Wonder What's Next. Both are good, very good.

Glassjaw - Screamo baby... yeah! Smart writing, and anger, and some wall of sound vibe to their music. And well it's great breakup music.

The Marshes - Might be hard to find, these guys are Old Skool punk revivalists. Called a super group, their singer/bassist is a cool guy I know. Definately good, but not for everyone.

Bad Religion - It has to be said, they're good, and got a wry delivery I like.

Amen - Taking up the slack now that Rage Against the Machine is gone. Speed-metal meets punk, add anger, you get some scorching diatribes against politics and society.

Bright Eyes - Not for everyone, but singer/songwriter Conner Oberst's musical collective puts out some damned good songs, well not songs, more like stories. Just damn awesome. And he sounds like a punk singer, so hey!

Puya - I am gonna partially recommend them. A nu-metal type band from Miami, with heavy latin influence. They sing in Spanish on a number of songs, and the latin beats and stylings in the music makes it a bit out of the mold.

The Music - Kinda pretentious name, I know, but they're like a little Zeppelin, and a wee bit of techno, and go for the wall of sound. Great driving music.

That's all really. Again, take what I recommend or don't. SOme of these guys you may heard about, if not I say check 'em out. They're worth at least a try. With the exception of Chevelle they aren't A-listing tours.

Limp Bizkit is one of those bands that have gotten worse as they have gotten bigger. Their first album, "Three dollar bill", is one I awesome and I still listen to it frequently, and I can listen to and enjoy most of the songs on "Significant Other" and "Chocolate Starfish". I have no interest in "Results May Vary", however.

I also think Linkin Park is quite good, especially some songs on "Hybrid Theory" that didn't get released as singles. I like bands like 311 who have most of their songs without the whole "I'm depressed, please shoot me" vibe that a band like Staind has. Blah. Staind, I got no time for ya. Give me "It's Goin' Down" by the Crystal Method before you give me that "my parents don't love me (waaaah)" crap-o-la. Maybe being so far removed from the teen angst is why I'm so turned off by Staind and the like.

I do like Disturbed quite a bit, but I think of the as being more heavy than a "nu-metal" band. Same with Godsmack, who remind me so much of Alice in Chains.

Can I just add I don't understand the "System of a Down" love? They SUCK. SUCK. SUCK. Same with Korn. I don't get them either.

The nu-metal trend disturbs me far less than the God-forsaken whiny bitch "emo" trend. Acts like Dashboard Confessional and Brand New can be flushed right down the toilet before the worst nu-metal act gets the axe.

The only nu-metal band I even sort of like is Evanescence, and that's just because Amy Lee can actually sing.

Nu-metal is horrible, just horrible stuff. Say what you will about emo, but guys have been playing acoustic songs about losing their girls forever, so it's nothing new. But nu-metal is just sludge; the lyrics are utterly devoid of wit, there is no interesting musicianship, none of the singers are any good, and I literally cannot tell one band from another on the radio.

If this is what rock is coming to, thank God for the White Stripes. At least they sound different and sound like they actually care about their music.

Wait…if it’s MLK Jr. Day AND Pat Patterson’s Birthday…who gets the token win here?-- Matt "Excalibur05" Hocking on a match between Mark Henry and Rico

MH: What’s a clever way to say that I have a penis?
CJ: Uh…Mark, nobody’s going to buy that shirt.
MH: How about if I say that I’ve got…a…uh…?
CJ: Coming up with T-Shirt ideas is hard Mark, why not leave it to the WWE marketing department.
MH: I know! I’ve got it!
CJ: Got what?
MH: Stank! That’s Mah Stank! I’m gonna make a fortune!!
CJ: “That’s Mah Stank”?
MH: On the front it’ll say “Can You Smell It?” and on the back it’ll say “That’s Mah Stank”. Everybody’ll buy it because they’ll think it’s a Rock shirt.
CJ: You know…you might be on to something there, sad to say.
MH: I can’t wait to show mah stank to Trish.

You know, I have a feeling that Spanky didn’t quit, he was fired. Why? So they could repackage Mark Henry as “Stanky.” Think about THAT!

Some of the stuff is pretty good. I have to say I love Linkin Park, System of a Down, etc. My problem with a lot of the newer bands I hear on the radio is that all their songs sound exactly the same. I can't even tell which band is playing which song. It would be nice if there was something to set them apart from each other.
