I've finally got some money to burn on video games. I already own a PS2. However, im torn. Should i buy the most recent smackdown game-HCTP or should i just buy an old N64 along with No Mercy?
I prefer SmackDown! HCTP to No Mercy, because the game speed is a bit quicker and the grappling options are incredible. SIXTEEN front grapple moves, as opposed to the eight of No Mercy. SmackDown! does not lag at all when you have 6 characters (plus the ref) on screen, whereas No Mercy struggled mightily with four. SmackDown's Create-A-Wrestler mode is much deeper than No Mercy's, the season mode is longer and more in-depth.
And, to clinch it for SmackDown, they've got John Cena! Word Life!

i thought it was a bit short actually. seemed too easy to finish =\
that, and there aren't even any movie sequences or clip show things to unlock, just the gay credits, which still only show the entrances in the game graphics. pretty weak.
ps
also, VERY irritating: when you finish the game once through, if you start a new season as a diff char, it automatically starts you on the "skip" option on any match you are involved in. thats gay too.
No Mercy is one of favorite games of all time. The controls are among the best ever made. So simple to learn, but still, masterable. 4 way matches take forever, and Ladder Matches can be better than a real wrestling match. No joke.
The Story mode sucks and takes FOREVER to finish completely, but that's why I don't do it
"Huard, gonna go back to throw the ball. Sets up, looks, throws towards the corner of the endzone...it is INTERCEPTED INTERCEPTED, THE DUCKS HAVE THE BALL! Down to the 35, the 40. Kenny Wheaton's gonna score! Kenny Wheaton is gonna score! 20, the 10, Touchdown! Kenny Wheaton on the interception, the most incredible finish to the football game!"

Come on, is it so hard to use capital letters?
Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.

No Mercy also has 16 front grapples- 8 weak, 8 strong. But the grappling systems are the only comparable things between the two games. If you still want some of the NM AKI-developed grappling, try Def Jam Vendetta, which is more like a tournament fighter in a ring(no weapons, specials are basically finishers).
HTCP is the first WWE game I've owned since NM, and I say get HCTP. No mercy is good, but I wouldn't buy an N64 just to play it. NM was good for its time, but HCTP does almost everything better now: faster gameplay w/o lag, newer wrestlers(plus better Legends), more weapons/environments, more event matches(NM didn't even have Hell In a Cell) and a better CAW.
Some downsides of HCTP are no Women's season(meaning no way to build them up), only 2 specials per wrestler(in NM you could have one for each grapple situation), and an imperfect roster(missing cruisers, tag teams, and women), although you can find good CAWs & movelists. Plus, I'm not that great at it, so things can get difficult for me even on normal, especially against Goldberg, Lesnar, and HHH.
The things I miss most from NM are same wrestler vs. wrestler, and playing as Foley, since I haven't found a great CAW.

Actually if you watch the credits all the way though there's a pretty cool Cena freestyle at the very end
