Now, please don't read this and look at me like I'm a retard, I just wasn't watching when it happened. And I can't find anything online that explains it well enough.

So here it goes... What the heck was XFL?

I know it was some purchase Vince made that ended up being an embarrasment of sports entertainment, but what WAS it?

Triple H is like fine wine, his grace and talents accented gracefully by his advancing years. Ah, yes, just like fine wine; that or those triple chedder nachos I forgot in the back of my fridge for three months.

You probably wouldn't find anything online about it, seeing as its pretty much been liquidated and now only exists as the punchline of IWC jokes. The XFL was Vince's big new-millenium brainchild: American football crossed with pro-wrestling, with harder-hitting rules, camera-helmets and all kinds of other guff to try and make it seem more "extreme". It had one season, but was dropped following heroicly bad ratings. The fact that the teams were composed almost entirely of poeple not good enough to make the NFL probably didn't help matters either.

It was Vince's Football league....It didn't work because it was pretty much rejects from NFl and other random no names. It wasn't different enough to compete.

It wouldn't have been a flop if it was "sports entertainment". I would have watched every show if it had Big Show playing football, RVD kicking drunken looking field goals, Benoit stopping a Touch Down with a Suplex. I was dissapointed when I found out if was just football.

Nobody will look at you like a retard. I mean, news takes a while to get to Palouse. And if you ever wondered about how Ryan Leaf made it in the NFL, don't ask. Ignorance would treat you better.

There was a pretty good article on the XFL on Wrestlecrap a few weeks ago, but unfortunately WC no longer keeps its complete archive on the Web, so it's gone.

Actually, if Vince had kept the show about football and not retarded cheerleader skits the league would still be going on. More importantly, if he had tried to be NFL-friendly instead of going head to head with the NFL in his statements, it would still be on. Lastly, if he had actually thought the rules out instead of changing them weekly, it would still have been on. If you look back at the ratings, they were more than the NHL gets now. Also the attendance figures were good for the league. It was a good idea, that Vince pretty much ruined.

I know that a few NFL scouts were looking for the XFL to become a good AAA for the NFL. But Vince and his ego totally destroyed the league. That is how I saw it anyway. Several players from the XFL are now in scout teams for the NFL and of course Tommy Maddux and Rod Smart are NFL players that play in the NFL now.

I watched about 15 minutes of the inaugural XFL game and had to change the channel. The worst part of it was that the cameras were bouncing all over the field. It seemed like they couldn't stay on just one camera for more than 3 seconds. Talk about promoting ADD....Plus, most of the players were pretty much NFL rejects, who, in my opinion, were using this swill as a platform to get a WWE tryout. Plus, Jerry Lawler and Jesse Ventura doing play-by-play? Worked for wrestling, certainly not for football. At least Jim Ross used to do Falcons games on the radio. After 15 minutes, I knew Vinny Mac's little pet project was doomed.

Actually, the NFL stole the "floating camera" for football from the XFL. Helmet cam was cool, the cameramen on the field was not. The games that JR and the King called were good. It was Vince who decided to put Ventura in the booth for publicity and he did such a horrid job, it backfired big time. I do often wish "what could have been" when I go through football withdrawal like I am now. And no Arena Football doesn't do it for me.

Really? I thought they played football so they could get back in the NFL.

I was/am a REAL big XFL fan. (waits for laughing to stop). I don't know...I just really enjoyed it, and I'm smart enough to know that with a salary cap, sometimes the NFL teams have to cut guys who are good enough but are making "too much money" and can be replaced by cheap rookies. Not to mention guys who were coming back from injury. Someday, I'm gonna write a book on the XFL. As soon as I can find a publisher....

I was an XFL fan as well, I think the most interesting thing about the XFL era was how the media covered it. Nothing was ever news, every sports "media" type was an opinion piece of how XFL sucks in every which way and put there own spin to it. They diss the cheerleaders and the camera work and think that's silly but that's all they talk about and ignore the game... I know it's just silly sports media but it is interesting how they can put a perception out there of something being much worse then it actually is. For example someone breaks a tackle it's NOT called great running it's poor defense. While on the other side when it's a low scoring game it's NOT good defense but poor offense. It's little anti talk on everything XFL did to take away all it's credibility from the very beginning was the real story.

Sure Vince made his mistakes, being really forthcoming and aggressive against the NFL was a mistake. Especially considering that the NFL has a association with all major U.S sports network (FoxSports, ESPN)... If he was going to say it's just a off season alternative, the media probably wouldn't be so harsh on the product.

I didn't see the games as bad as they were portrayed in the media. As for the quality of players, I would say they are about College football quality which BTW never has a hard time being considered legit or CFL quality which being Canadian shows the hypocrisy of our media as well to rip on this for being second teir yet praise the CFL... As for the stuff around the game, sure the cheerleaders were a little on the revealing side but have you seen the San Diego Chargers cheerleader, the outfits are not that different. And the Cowboy cheerleaders made a franchise out of marketing themselves. The only difference is Vince was being honest, and when showing the cheerleaders didn't act like "Oh how did they get on camera" like the NFL does. Also the NFL stole many of his camera ideas as well.

I too did not think the XFL was as bad as it was made out to be. But Vince's "WWF-style" marketing, as I'll call it, really rubbed too many people the wrong way in order for the league to gain popular acceptance. I'm not sure what Vince was REALLY going for, but it seemed like he was going for more than just "popular acceptance", the hype machine was in overdrive and it just didn't work.

In a way it was symptomatic of how wrestling goes wrong when gimmicks are over done. It seemed that the XFL was trying to sell it's "gimmicks" AS the product rather than selling the product itself. All we heard about was the cheerleaders and the "extreme" rules, and the camera angles, and this and that. Those things are fine but in the end, what the viewing public wanted to see was FOOTBALL. The arena league's relative success is a testament to that. With less than 10% of the hype the arena football league has maintained their deal with NBC now and appears to be doing fairly well. They don't try to imply that arena football is inherently better than regular football. They just say "Hey, we got fooball. The rules are a little different, but see if you like it." Vince didn't appear to be content to just sell football. He wanted to sell HIS brand of football HIS way and it just didn't work.

You may want to check out the book, THE LONG BOMB, which is still available on Amazon.com for about $10.50 (http://www.amazon.com/ exec/obidos/tg/detail/ -/0609609920/qid=1077826877/ sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-7892928-2530411?v=glance& s=books). It covers the entire history of the XFL for the most part.

I have a review up there as well - "A Reader from Louisville, KY" - where I recommend the book, but suggest that you may want to research the history of the XFL first before diving into it as it lacks a lot of background information for those not in-the-know. The book is pretty sloppy in a number of places, but at least it was a bit more coherent than the SEX, LIES, & HEADLOCKS book that came out close to the same time.

I have both books, and have read them both. I thought "Sex, Lies and Headlocks" was real good. It's been a while since I've read it, so I can't say what was good or bad, I just remember liking it.

And as an XFL fan, I thought the "Long Bomb" book was interesting. Since they really only covered the Outlaws season, you didn't really get a good feel for the rest of the league, other than the ratings were low. And you could tell the author didn't think much of the league, either.

Well, the XFL did produce He Hate Me aka Rod Smart of the Carolina Panthers. The kid actually has skill. I watched him score a pair of TD's returning kicks last year. But other than that, the XFL is best left forgotten.

See, there's the problem. It has been forgotten. I was trying to come up with a hack of NES Play Action Football to make it an XFL game (how do you think I found the Mothership?) but I couldn't really find enough usable info on them. I had stats, but couldn't tell anything else about the players. (sigh) Anyone else know of a good site for this stuff?
