As I've said in another thread, I don't really have much of a problem with a HHH vs. Benoit vs. Michaels match at WrestleMania because I think those 3 will put on a hell of a match. However, it does seem hypocritical for Shawn Michaels to agree to be involved in a 3 way main event at WrestleMania.

In one of Mick Foley's books, he mentioned that the long term plan for the main event at WrestleMania was a 3 way match involving Mankind. I don't remember if it was WrestleMania XIV which had Michaels vs. Austin or if it was WrestleMania XV which had Rock vs. Austin, but I definitely remember Mick saying he was penciled in one of those as the 3rd participant.....until Shawn Michaels voiced his disagreement. According to Mick, Shawn wasn't opposed to Mick Foley being involved, but he did oppose a 3 way WWF Championship match as the main event. Michaels apparently argued that the Title match at WrestleMania should be 1 on 1.

I can't say that I disagree with Shawn's logic there, but it does seem hypocritical that he would now agree to be the third wheel in the Title match at WrestleMania if he argued against this type of match when it was someone else mentioned as the 3rd member.

I think in the same book, Vince rationalizes the decision to go with a Fatal 4 Way by saying that "just because something is the way it's always been, doesn't mean it's the way it always has to be".

Besides, we still don't know if they're going for a triple threat, or WM X v2.0.

It's probably easier to analyze a situation when you're not directly involved like Shawn wasn't in 1999, but...

Let's imagine for 5 seconds you're Shawn Michaels, and you've been off the long term inactive list for 18 months now. You haven't had a relapse of the major injury that put you there, but you know in the back of your mind you're basically one bad bump away from retiring again. And while ideally you think the biggest match of the year should be one on one, you get a phone call from your boss painting a scenario for you, saying how would you feel about being a headliner at one of the biggest shows that we as a company ever do?

Not only is it the honor of being asked to lead the big dance, but you quickly do the math and realize you could pay for your son's college education in about 30 minutes' worth of work as well as having the chance to work ONE MORE main event at Mania, where 5 years ago no one, yourself included, thought you'd be.

Could you say no to that?

Or he could just have changed his mind given that it was like 5 or so years ago. Crikey I thought tartan shirts were fashionable a while back but now? Ewww.

With past WM being headlined by matches other than 1 on 1's, the brand split etc., Wrestlemania's a different event now.

Part of me thinks it should be a singles match for the title every year, but I wouldn't leap on Michaels' back for now believing otherwise.

On the original question, of course Shawn is a hypocrite. And, since the Dog Show was this week, let us not forget it was this week 7 years ago when Shawn pulled his 'I Lost My Smile' crap, screwing up the booking plans leading to Mania XIII.

What you've just described is the very definition of a hypocrite. He was opposed to it until it was him that benefitted from it. Then, he has no problem with it.

Maybe, but it seems rather convenient that he was so opposed to it before, yet changes his mind just in time for it to benefit him. I can't see that the only time it was changed from a 1 on 1 (Fatal 4 way at WrestleMania XVI) changed his mind.

Believe me, I'm not jumping on Michaels' back. Shawn is one of my favorites and, as I stated, I think Benoit, Michaels, and HHH will put on a great match. I'm just posing a question that I have thought about and discussed with some friends.

Basically what I was trying to say is that WM is now a totally different animal to what it was a few years ago.

Last year the RAW title match was away down the card in what, 4th from top. The year before that every man and his dog seemed to be of the belief that the main event shouldn't even have been a match for the title. Before that the face always walked out with the belt. Now we've seen heel HHH and a swerving Austin go over.

The event's changing, which is only natural, and it wouldn't surprise me if Michaels' attitude changed with it.
The fact that something 'always was' in this instance seems little reason to keep things the same if buy rates can be upped by having a Triple Threat as the ME.

On top of all of that, just because in storyline Michaels is the one who's been 'thrown in', doesn't mean that that was the case from a booking point of view. Maybe it was always a triple threat, maybe it was originally HBK/HHH. Who knows?

I sure as heck would hate to have some of the opinions I held 5 years ago being hoisted upon me today.

Forget hypocrite, when Shawn superkicked Benoit and signed on the dotted line, the first thing to go through my head was "Now I *KNOW* Jesus wouldn't do that"

Here's the thing. We don't know if this match will be the main event at Wrestlemania. In all likelihood, Vince doesn't know either. Last year they supposedly didn't decide until the weekend of the show on which match would go last. A lot of it depends on the finish of the match, because they would want to end on a positive note.

In 1999 there was one world title match and there was no doubt of which match would close the show. That isn't the case anymore. There's two world titles, there's multiple main event possibilities. Holding Shawn to something he said about the main event in 1999 isn't fair, because the circumstances have completely changed since then. Also, there's no guarantee that this will even be the main event.

The only way HBK is a hypocrite is if the Benoit-HHH-HBK match goes on last at Wrestlemania, and it comes out that HBK knew all along it would go last but wanted to be added anyway. But even then, considering that they did a 4-man main event the next year after HBK spoke out against having more then 2 men in the match, you have to consider that he knows the times have changed since he made that statement in '99.

This is the same Shawn Michaels that practically carried the company on his back in the 90's ... I'd say he deserves a spot.

While I'm not a huge fan of the Triple Threat match idea that's floating around, I have no problem with it. I'd rather for them to put HBK in this program rather than just throwing something together at the last minute ...

The answer is no. I wouldn't turn down that chance and I don't blame Shawn for not turning it down.

Then again, I never got someone else removed from that WrestleMania Title shot because I voiced my opposition to the WrestleMania Title shot being anything other than 1 on 1. So, how does my answer have anything to do with the question about Shawn Michaels?

I haven't looked at either Foley book in a while, but didn't Shawn actually lobby for Mick to stay in the match, thus making this whole argument somewhat pointless?

You better ask those sheep-sellers in the temple that went through a hardcore match with the inter-dimensional champ. It was a TBW match (Tables Benches and Whips) and Jesus is the all-time master of the match. It was a handicap match too. Upon getting the bell for the win, he said, "If you want to be the Man you got to Beat the Son of Man."

You could look it up.

Benoit lied with another man's wife. Michaels was simply upholding the commandments. =)

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
