Plucked from the old WOOLCO logo, this week's W was suggested by SOK. To learn more about Woolco, Click Here (wtv-zone.com)

Wa-hey! I never thought I'd see that logo ever again...

There was a Woolco in my area when I grew up. I never associated it with being a "discount" chain; it was just another department store.

As it turns out, Wal-mart really broke into Canada with the purchase of 122 Woolco stores from Woolworth's in 1994. So it appears Woolco hung on much longer up here.

More info is here.

There's even a Cape Breton (island part of Nova Scotia; long story) folksong called "Workin' at the Woolco (Management Trainee Blues)" which I've unfortunately never heard, but according to CBC was written by the unforgettable songwriting team of Dillon, Dubinsky, and Harley, of "Buddy and the Boys" fame. If one could find it, I suspect it would be hilarious.

My only complaint: I always remember seeing the logo in red (save for ads in newspapers).

Glad to be of service, CRZ! I have fond memories of the Woolco/Woolworth stores, way back when...

I actually came across this while doing some research on the merchandising history in Canada.

Not really sure how long of a story it is...

Long Island: Part of NY state
Florida Keys: Part of the state of Florida
Vancouver Island: Part of the province of British Columbia

I think the long story part of it is why it's Cape Breton and not, say, Breton Island.

When I was a youngster, we went to the Woolworth's on Main Street. It was called a "five and dime" back then, where you could get just about everything on the planet from housewares to candy to baseball cards.

Hey I live in Cape Breton (usually). That's all. I don't know where the name came from.
But even stranger the university there is called the University College of Cape Breton. Maybe because UCCB sounds better than UCB, I don't know.

The other thing that tarnish was probably thinking of is that Cape Breton Island is no longer in fact an island since it is linked to Nova Scotia by a causeway.

Hence the Cape Breton seperatist, General John Cabot Trail whose slogan is "Blow up the causeway, eh!"

And Llakor wins a fabulous NO PRIZE!

Cape Breton is one of my favorite places in the world. It's definitely one of the most beautiful (best for most people to visit; like Newfoundland, you'd have to be hard to live there all year).

Cape Breton is also the type of place whose culture is unlike any you'll see anywhere else. Sure, they talk a little funny (even by Maritime standards), and they'll try to con you into playing tarabish for money (the most confusing card game you can play with a standard deck), but salt of the earth doesn't begin to describe it.

And as the good General John Cabot Trail of the Cape Breton Liberation Army will tell you, CB is plenty bigger than PEI, which is a province of its own. Which is why you'll most often hear him say, "Down wit da cazzway, b'y"

It's not really that confusing. It's a lot like hearts, except you play in pairs and only use 36 cards.

Lessee here...

- It's got an Auction for trump like Bridge or Euchre.
- It's got a shortened deck like Euchre/45s.
- It's got runs like in Gin Rummy. But you have to "announce" them at the right time and only the highest one "counts".
- It's got an alternative card order as in Euchre. In trump: Jack, Nine, Ace, Ten, Queen, King, Eight, Seven, Six. In non-trump: Ace, Ten, King, Queen, Jack, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six.
- Weird scoring to go with the card order? Check: 20, 14, 11, 10, 4, 3, 0, 0, 0, respectively in Trump; 11, 10, 4, 3, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0 in non-Trump. (62 points in trump, 30 in each non-trump).
- "Bella" (having the King and Queen in trump). Again, you have to call it at the right time.
- You can lead trump at any time.
- You have to follow suit. If you can't, you must trump.
- If trump has been laid, and you have to play trump, you must beat the trump laid if you can.
- Last trick is worth 10.

Just remembering the rules is making my head hurt. I recall that when I played, the "low cards" in Trump and non-Trump were ordered differently (for some reason I remember Six>Seven>Eight in trump, but Eight>Seven>Six in non-trump). Or maybe it had to do with whether the suit was red or black...

More rules and info can be found here:
http://www.xasa.es/ grupos/rec/article/68439/ rec.games.misc

Oh, and to be fair, Auction 45s/120s is technically the more popular game in Cape Breton, but Tarabish is still the one they tease the tourists with...

That sounds almost as confusing as sheepshead was when I learned how to play it.

It's a 3 to 8 player game, but I've only played the 5 player game at yahoo.com

5 player game. Cut-throat. You play in partners, but it is random. Either Who has the Jack of diamonds or a non diamond ace that you call, depending on how the table is setup.

Diamonds, plus face cards are trump (I believe you use the Aces through 7s)
but the order is important.

Queens (Clubs, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, in that order, IIRC), Jacks (same order), Kings (same order), Ace, 10, 9, 8, and 7 of diamonds end the trump suit.

You collect books like in hearts/spades/euchre. When you order up, your partner, who you don't know is yet, try to collect 60 points.

2 cards are in the blind. If you call to go on offence, you pickup the blind and discard 2 cards.

If no one orders up, 1 of 2 things happen.

If you are playing doublers, then there is a redeal and all winnings (and losings) are doubled. or you play Leasters. Everyone keeps their hand and you try to collect (cut throat) the LEAST amount of points. Doublers or Leasters are called before the game starts.

Aces are 11, 10s are 10, queens 1 i think, jacks are 5? kings are 2? I haven't played in a long while.

There are 10 hands in the game. If you and your partner get 60 (or is it 61?) points, you get 2 points for the hand, your partner gets 1, and the other three players lose one point. Everyone startes at zero, so if you add up the winnings and losings, it comes to zero.

If you get 91 points or more, it doubled. 4 for you, 2 for partner, others lose 2. If you and partner shoot the moon and get all 120 points available, it's triples. 6 for you, 3 for partner, others lose 3.

If you were playing doublers, and the score doubled 3 times and then you and partner get 91 points, you win 16 (2 base points x (3 doubles x 2) x 2 for 91+ points ) partner 8, others lose 8.

You can always go alone and try for the 61 alone, and you get 4, 8, or 12 for getting the 120.

IF you and your partner get set, the points are opposite. you lose 2, parter 1, others gain 1.

goto http://games.yahoo.com/ games/helphub.html?page=sh to learn more...It's a fun game once you understand it.
