Well, I got the DVD today, and I must say, I am a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the stuff that's on there is great, particularly the Disc One stuff (WCW, SMW, ECW are all on disc one, WWE is on two). However, Disc Two kinda slows it down a bit with some matches we've all seen 37654287795 times.
-Mind Games vs. HBK. It's on THREE DVDs now, for Christ's sake.
-Hell in a Cell vs. Undertaker. It's just so played now.
-Over the Edge vs. Austin. Already on the last Foley disc.
I mean, there's just so many matches to pick: the Boiler Room vs. UT (or really ANY of his Taker matches), his HHH Cell match, his Last Man Standing or Ladder matches with The Rock, most of which haven't been put out on DVD before.
I haven't seen any other previous WWE DVD's (excpet for Flair), which means I haven't seen those Foley matches that are on other discs, so this new DVD sounds like a good buy to me.
Don't get me wrong, it'd be great to have the ladder match with Rock (and a lot of other matches), but all three of the matches you listed are essential even if they've been on another DVD. You can't justify leaving them out of what's intended to be a pretty definitive Foley collection.
If you've never owned another Foley DVD collection, this is a good primer of his notable matches. But yeah, there are a lot of repeats. I wanted more stuff that I haven't seen before. Like why didn't they have the match where Vader powerbombed him on the concrete? That was a huge milestone in his career, talked about ad naseum in the book.
Another thing in the DVD that bugged me - in the setup for the match with Sandman, Foley says, "We had a lot of great matches, this isn't one of those." Well, why the hell would they put that in? Just to see Sandman get knocked around and not lay down for a three count?

I didn't have too much of a problem with the matches chosen. Foley did claim that the Sandman match wasn't the best, but trust me it wasn't their worst either I've seen a few real bombs between these two.
Disc 1 really does have some great stuff, and is almost worth it alone for the 'Cane Dewey' promo. Which is just off the charts as far as raw emotion goes. As much as I do like the commentary of Foley and Coach during the Sting match I would have liked an option to watch it without as well.
I think the DVD is easily worth 25 bucks especially if you don't own any Foley footage. There really isn't a bad match on there. I would have liked some more bonus footage though, I feel a little skimped on that. More WWE interviews, some Rock and Sock maybe even his first WWE televised match as Mankind.
Maybe that's what it was missing, more bonus stuff. The Flair DVDs seem loaded, by comparison.
But the addition of his first WWF match was a nice touch, as was the blood footage of his match with Vader. The audio of his nose breaking is brutal alone....

The match with Sandman was pure comedic gold. With that said, it should been an extra and the Beach Blast match with Sting should have been made one of the normal matches. Oh well, same difference.
As for the second disc, it's hard to criticize. For one, you have to realize they have to cater to fans who didn't buy the previous DVDs, and realize with Hard Knocks out-of-print, this DVD has to be a complete Foley compilation. Leaving out Mind Games or HIAC with Taker would have been criminal, even though, yes, it sucks that I have three different DVDs with Mind Games on it. The two main changes I would have made with the second disc was to first get rid of Cactus vs HHH on Raw with something else and the Austin match, which isn't THAT good to be repeated on to another DVD, with preferably the memorable Royal Rumble '99. Although that wouldn't happen because Mick hates that match, and for good reason.
See, I'm disappointed because I have the last Foley DVD, as well as the HBK DVD (which also had Mind Games). My disappointment stems from my collection of matches that I have, I have most of the WWE stuff already, so Disc 2 is nearly useless for me.
And, in retrospect, I wish it had the first Dude Love match from 1997.
God I'm so sick of that Mind Games match appearing everywhere. I didn't even care for the match all that much, and I love Shawn(dig Mick too). Talk about overrated. Seems like when showing anything pre-1997, WWE always goes for the obvious. Any (WWF/E)matches on there that are actually a surprise? I'll still probably enjoy it though.
That Sandman match has turned my girlfriend into a wrestling fan. She couldn't stop laughing at him staggering around half-aware, and I must have replayed the chair throw about 20 times the first time she saw it. Now she's passing up CSI for Raw, and she ordered Royal Rumble for me. Count me down as a supporter of matches like that on WWE DVD's.

I'd show her the necro angle, i'm sure she'd love that! The last two minutes of that match are hilarious but to change a female into a wrestling fan is pretty impressive.
On the DVD, all round is good, I believe Ventura's commentary is missing from the Vader match which takes away from it, the ECW tag match is also very funny, but I just can't seem to stop playing the 'Have a bad day' segemnt. The music and comedy is just too much.
I just got the From the Vault Shawn Michaels dvd. Could someone please tell me if I made the better choice between it and the Foley dvd? I'm a big Foley mark, but the Michaels dvd had more famous matches. I never had any compilations of either guy before.
Someone please answer me before I break the protective covering on the dvd, thereby making it unreturnable to Best Buy.
For me personally I still like From the Vault better, I'm a huge HBK mark. I beleive the quality of the matches are better on the HBK DVD and that the blurring on the DVDs takes up about 40% of the Foley DVD and is almost non-existant on the HBK DVD. Both have the 'WWF' audio taken out aswell.
Just my opinion, I'd stick with the HBK DVD. But get other people opinion before you decide.
I hope Mick's around long enough, even if it has to be off and on, to have another DVD-full of highlights someday. He embodies the business like few others. That promo he cut with Orton his first night back on Raw after the "coward" angle was a classic. Best promo in a long time... maybe the best since Jake.
I think I'm back to near non-whiny-level health so hopefully the full schedule of comix n' workarates will get mostly done this week. We'll see, won't we.
