34-0 at halftime.

And who said Oregon should be there, eh? Don't they feel silly.

I love man. I'm glad he is coming back next year, so he can do the games, Musburg has been screwing up. Put Griese with him and its the best team in college football announcing.

I'll get the gloating out of the way first...

As a UM alumnus and a current UM Law student - this is a glorious night indeed. Undefeated over 22 games and a 33-5 record since the 1999 season.

Some random thoughts:
Oregon was the only one-loss team who might've made that game interesting. Might have.

Crouch absolutely sucks as a passer - I had to keep from laughing when Nebraska went to three- or four-receiver sets - but when he kept the ball on the option and his team blocked for him, Nebraska moved the ball. Other than that and DeJuan Croce's punt returns, no one else on Nebraska showed up to play.

If anything, late in the game (fourth quarter or so), I got a real "I can't stand Miami and I especially can't stand that they're going to win it all in the Rose Bowl" vibe from Keith Jackson. I love him as a commentator, but he seemed kind of off when Miami made the game a virtual no-contest.

Oh yeah, and if we're stuck with the BCS for another five years, they really need to add a bonus deduction for winning your conference championship, so stuff like this doesn't happen again. Of course, a sixteen-team playoff for the National Championship would end all the controversy...

Let me know if i'm smoking crack or not...

use the BCS system in place next year, but instead of using it to seed the championship game, use it to determine the top 14 teams for a playoff, where the top 2 teams draw 1st round byes [sorta like s.series 98 where rocky won the gold]

and since there are 13 games played, 13 of the exsiting bowl sites (the long running bowls, none of this .com bowl crap) are used for the matchups, with the final game played at whatever is the new site in the rotation. The site that had the final game last year just has a regular game, and the other 2 BCS sites have the semi-finals...

whaddaya think?

I just don't know how they can keep this system in place.

The ducks were ranked 2 in both polls, and the BCS computers rank them so poorly that they drop to 4th in the BCS poll

And the ducks proved they are better if you connect the dots.

CO beat NB
OR beat CO

I'm not saying that the ducks would have a chance against Miami...because they were in a fight with the gators as to see who could blow out their opposition more...

I honestly would have loved to see a Florida battle for the title -- Miami Hurricanes vs Flordia Gators

With all due (lack of respect) to the BCS, this was somewhat of a screwy season. How many teams exactly blew a virtually guaranteed shot to get in the Rose Bowl with Miami?

If I remember correctly (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), the pecking order the last 2 weeks of the regular season went something like:
Nebraska (loses to Colorado) -> Florida
Florida (loses to Tennessee) -> Oklahoma
Oklahoma (loses to Okla. St.) -> Tennessee (This may be switched with Florida)
Tennessee (loses to Florida) -> Texas
Texas (loses to Colorado)

Who's left? In a span of 2 weeks, 5 teams (should've been) thrown out of the hunt. However, that obviously wasn't the case, at least with Nebraska. Does anyone else remember any of the BCS heads saying they would try to preserve the Rose Bowl as Big 10 v. Pac-10 whenever possible, or was that only the off-years?

I wonder if there was ever a year in college football where you had three or four undefeated teams. It always seems the last two weeks of the year determine the outcome of the bowl games. I will say that the college football will always have controversy, because of the polls, BCS and the fact there are way too many teams in it. Sure, all the other college sports have playoffs, but how many people bitch about teams on the bubble not getting in ie the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Football does need a playoff system, but using the polls or the BSC will lead to choas.

The upside for the BSC is for them to say, "All in all, we have an undefeated team as the winner while everyone else lost a game. And that is what counts."

In the end that is what matters is that we have a true number one team, sorry to burst Oregon's bubble, but I don't think it mattered who was in that game, Miami was going to kill them.

A Fan- Its amazing that after the 94-95 season people wanted the BSC when Penn State and Nebraska didn't play, but how about the Florida State/Notre Dame situation the year before. I thought if you beat a team on the field, thats what counts, its the Southern block of voters that counts in the polls.

I don't want to really get into this argument again, but a playoff system in college football will never, ever work.

The idea in this thread is to give the top 14 BCS teams a playoff bid. That's no good. Go with 16, that's no good.

Let's say you go with 8, which is somewhat realistic.

1. Miami
2. Nebraska
3. Colorado
4. Oregon
5. Florida
6. Tennessee
7. Texas
8. Illinois

Where's LSU, the SEC champions? Where's Washington State, who, at 9-2, are as good record-wise (pre-bowl games) as Florida? Where is Oklahoma, who finished no worse than Florida? How about Stanford? How about the ACC champions, Maryland?

Go by major conference champions and two at-large bids, using the top two non-champion BCS teams:

1. Miami
2. Oregon
3. Colorado
4. Illinois
5. Maryland
6. LSU
7. Nebraska
8. Florida

Where's Tennessee? Where's Texas? Where's Oklahoma? Where's Washington State? Where's Stanford?

There is no realistic way to end controversy. And, quite honestly, there are never eight teams deserving to play for the national championship. At best, you'll have four. And then a conference champion wonders why their 10-1 isn't as good as someone else's.

Yeah, but 2 teams fighting over who is #8 is a lot more acceptable that 2(or 3) teams fighting over who is #2. I think and 8 team playoff with the conference champs and 2 at large bids is the best way to go.

1994-1995 season comes to mind.
Nebraska finished undefeated and won the National Championship.
Penn State finished undefeated... and got second place.
Texas A&M finished undefeated (technically, 10-0-1, with a 21-21 game against SMU - before the NCAA instituted overtime - as the only blemish on their record)... and got diddly-squat. No TV, no bowl game. Then again, they were on probation that year, so that might have been why.

And here's another semi-interesting note about that season: Colorado finished 11-1, with a regular season loss to Nebraska as the only blemish to its season. But it couldn't get to play Penn State in the Rose Bowl, and Miami got priority over the Buffalos to play Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. So Colorado got stuck clobbering Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

Yes you are correct, a lot of teams had a shot and blew it, but the only problem with all of this is that at NO point was Oregon in contention, when obviously they should've been. They never blew it once, unlike Nebraska who DID and still made it to the championship game.

But you make a good point, it was kind of a messed up year.

As for the tournament, the way I think they should do it is take the conference winner from EVERY DIV I conference, all 11 conferences (so that way they don't get the them arguing about being left out.) and then give 5 spots to the top 5 teams remaining.

So this year you have (in no particular order)
1. Miami (Big East champs)
2. Oregon (Pac 10 champs)
3. Illinois (Big 10 champs)
4. Maryland (ACC champs)
5. Colorado (Big 12 champs)
6. LSU (SEC champs)
7. Louisville (Conference USA champs)
8. Toledo (Mid-American champs)
9. BYU (Mountain West champs)
10. Middle Tennessee St. (Sun Belt champs)
11. Lousiana Tech (WAC champs)
12. Florida
13. Tennessee
14. Texas
15. Oklahoma
16. Nebraska

You might have two problems with this and I will answer them both by comparing it to the basketball tournament.
1. Toledo? Middle Tennessee St? You probably think they don't belong there. Well sure most of the time they will likely get killed, but they won their conference, they should play for something better than the Mobile Bowl or whatever they go to. Besides you never know there COULD be an upset. And nobody has a problem with the winner of the Southern League and all them other conferences getting in the NCAA tournament.

2. What about other teams that deserve it? Well first of all, Washington St. is the only team with a record as good as these teams, and well, they're just out of luck. Again I compare it to the NCAA tournament last year. I remember Alabama having a good year, but they didn't make it to the NCAA tournament and were upset about it but when it was all said and done, you didn't hear about it. Why? Because everyone excepted the winner of the tournament as the national champion. If Washington St. was left out, their fans would be upset, but in the end more people would be satisfied with the national champion. And it would definitely be less controversary than this year.

Man, I talk too much.

While a playoff giving conference champions automatic berths seems like a good idea, let me offer a couple of scenarios:

1. NORTH TEXAS won their conference with a 5-6 overall record and became the first losing team to automatically qualify for a postseason bowl. Yee-ha.

2. The Big Ten could have as many as four undefeated teams since they are one solid conference and do not play every team every year.

I don't know why people have this fixation with there having to be one national champion. It's the ridiculoud hype around the basketball tourney that has resulted in the explosion of Division one teams from schools that shouldn't even bother. Quinnipiac? Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis? Who the hell are they? Why can't we just watch the damn games and enjoy them that way.
