Dark match: Palumbo & Stamboli defeated Mike Kruel & John Walters who apparently lives in Washington DC (I know cheap face pop).

Josh Matthews & Michael Cole come to the ring for Velocity tapings:

Funaki defeated Akio.
Ultimo Dragon defeated Shannon Moore in a solid match in my opinion.
Sakoda defeated Scotty 2 Hotty with the foot on the ropes. Scotty was over like crazy

A service woman sings the National Anthem, Tazz comes out and we have the Smackdown tapings.

1. Paul Heyman is in the ring introducing us to the show but before he can say anything, Vincent Kennedy McMahon struts (or waddles) to the ring. Vince said that this
should have been a historic moment for Smackdown that was ruined because Chris Benoit went to RAW. When asked to explain himself, Heyman says "Screw Chris Benoit" and uses Hall & Nash, Hogan, and Bret Hart as example of things Vince has done in the same situation. Paul then announced a 15 man Royal Rumble match with the winner facing Lesnar.

2. The beginning of many skits involving wrestlers selecting numbers, Dawn Marie with the lottery bin, and as many sexual references to Dawn and playing with balls as possible.

3. The Bashams beat Paul London & Billy Kidman to keep the title when Kidman gets his legs taken out while doing the SSP (a move London should be doing, but I digress) by Danny Basham, a switch behind the refs back, and a DDT from the top rope.

4. Once again Chavo Guerrero Sr. can't understand why his own flesh and blood would do such damage to him. Chavo says he will get revenge.

5. Rey Mysterio defeated Jamie Noble in a great match that featured lots of new moves from both guys. The big story here was the ending. Noble ducks the West Coast Pop and Rey goes to the floor. As Noble gets ready to leap on Rey, Nidia starts wandering around and blocks him "by accident". Noble gets pissed, drags Nidia to the ring and whips her into the ropes for a clothesline. But Nidia ducked to the surprise of Noble and Rey get the West Coast Pop for the pin. After that Nidia shows that she really wasn't blind after all.

6. In the back Eddie Guerrero is taken out in the bathroom and is laid out. As Rey Mysterio is checking on him, Chavo Jr and Sr come in wondering what is going on. Rey accuses them but says they didn't do it. Moments later they show him put in the ambulance. About 20 minutes or so later, Heyman tells Angle (who wonders what the hell is going on) that he regained consciousness and his spot in the rumble is still available.

7. Josh Matthews asks Brock Lesnar if he "fears" Goldberg, which pisses off the champ. He says that people will be calling Goldberg the "Brock Lesnar wanna be". And then challenged anyone to a non title match. Which turns out to be unfortunately Orlando Jordan is a rather sloppy match with a really, really long rest period. Orlando taps out to the Brock Lock, or Sicilian Slice for Tony Mamaluke fans.

8. The final 4 in the Royal Rumble was Billy Gunn, Rikishi (15th selection), Kurt Angle (who was 1st), and Eddie Guerrero who sold his "Injury" for about 5 minutes and then wrestled like nothing was wrong. John Cena was in the rumble but was selling the leg injury he got at the Royal Rumble PPV. After Cena was eliminated by Big Show, Cena helped Show get eliminated with the help of a few other guys. Came down to Eddie and Kurt who then wrestled for another 10 minutes. Highlights of the match was many times both wrestlers has one foot on the floor it seemed. Eddie wins when he suplexes Kurt outside the ring.

Averall quite a small amount of matches but i suppose that it will make up for it with an extra long main event at the show, good to see the cruiserweights on Smackdown.

I hear that weather has shut down much of DC for the last couple of days, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of crowd they have. Of course, the Metro runs right to the MCI Center, so I imagine that most people who already paid for tickets found a way to get there.

As they set up Eddie as a title contender, they must also establish a feud for the Bashams. They're not horrible, but they are startlingly bland. if it were not for Shaniqua, they'd be downright boring. I'm not sure if I've ever seen their double-team finisher (all heel teams have one, right?).

I don't accept Scotty and Rikishi as title contenders. I think the Bashams have it in them to be a good brawling team; they're sizable and recall the Harris Brothers. Scotty/Rikishi are too comical to make that type of feud happen, but they are a stellar midcard, audience-rousing team.

You can't go with the APA unless Farooq steps aside and they induct another tough drunk into the fold a la Demolition.

So this might be the time for SmackDown to introduce their own Jindrak/Cade team with O'Haire and, well, somebody else. And hey, who's better than Kanyon?

Who else? Someone has to step up and make for an interesting fued with those guys. The FBI? Morgan/Rhyno?

Vince showed up? Anyone else thinking that they might be booking towards a Vince McMahon v. Paul Heyman v. Eric Bischoff match at WrestleMania XX? Battle of the "Big Three" promoters?

They had a good underdog face team in Spanky/London. O'Haire/Kanyon I could go with, London/Kidman I could live with (stereo SSP's?), maybe turn Haas/Benjamin face.

Knoble/Rey goes 9+ minutes - I'm *SO* there.

Tough drunk team? How's about Holly replacing Farooq? You know they can't have anything lined up for Bob right now, and I personally think he's a credible badass in tag team situations (just not in singles title contention situations).

I surprise myself by wishing those guys would split up and work in singles angles. Surprised for two reasons:

1) There are already a heap of singles wrestlers with nothing to do.

2) They are a great, established team.

But they haven't knocked me out with teamwork lately, and they were stuck in the thankless role of playing supporting roles for the Chavo/Eddy angle. They need to do something different to spark my interest in the team, and the work they do in singles matches has impressed me more lately.

That's brilliant. Holly and Bradshaw and Rhyno form THE RASMUSSENS, a team of drunken louts getting hammered before each match and unleashing Popeye-sized clubbing forearms.

Did I read that correctly ... Paul London is on Smackdown and doesn't get squashed ... I like sounds of the Kidman/London team ...

Smackdown could be full of good teams ... the Bashams, Haas & Benjamin, O'Haire/Kanyon, Kidman/London, Akio/Sakoda, etc ... I like the Bashams, but I agree they've gotten stale, but I don't think it's all their fault ...

O'm going to have to slightly disagree with you. Holly is in my mind a credible singles champ as long as its US or IC. He isnt and never will be over enough to be world champ. He and bradshaw proably would make a pretty decent power team.

According to thecubsfan.com, they have two, the "Meat Curtain" and the "Ball and Gag".

Not sure when the last time they used them was, though.

HO-LEE crap...London actually gets on Smackdown?! And isn't jobbed in Velocity or dark matches? Of course, I'll probably be reading his name in the dark match next week. Kidman/London? I guess it could work...do I see another Velocity tag team? I believe I do...

If it wasn't any of the Chavos that beat up Eddie, it HAS to be Kurt. I mean, who else would it be?

EDIT: Kanyon=KIDMAN. Damn all the K names mixing me up...

I live in VA and went to the Smackdown show in D.C. at the MCI Center. No it was not sold out. But shocking enough it was quite full. There were some empty seats, hell I got to move down one row, not much but still good, I was not on the floor but on the section right after that. Some quick notes that I saw:

Don't know how it will show on camera but the crowd was into the show enough, but mostly into the Royal Rumble. Also the crowd really seemed to be into John Cena, Eddie G, and Big Show. When Cena and Show got thrown out the crowd was not happy but they ended up ok with it after Eddie won. Whan Eddie got "injured" and the played his music for the Rumble many thought Chavo was coming.

Before the dark matches they ran like 3 or 4 WMXX promos. Of course Hogan got a good applause.

When they ran clips from RR and RAW dealing with Kane and Taker the crowd couldn't understand why they were being played cause we could not hear Cole and Tazz.

It seemed like a Rey Rey night. He had a match, featured mostly in the WWE/US Troops promo, got some interaction with Eddie, and did a commerical for a sponsor for the show. (Cannot remember what product but it delt with cars.)

Crowd didn't seem too into the Brock/Jordan match. When Brock said he was coming out to face "anyone" the crowd knew someone "non-over" was coming. And when Orlando Jordan came out we all REALLY knew it. LOTS of Goldberg chants at Lesner.

Sounds good to me.....

London on SD(this really should be his SD debut...or when he didn't sell Dawn's tits.)

CWs on SD in general is good.

Nidia finally ending the blind thing makes me all kinds of happy. It was so annoying...her stumbling around was longer than the matches.

Btw the Bashem's use the Ball and Gag almost every SD they are on. Never heard of a Meat curtain though.

Eddie and Benoit both getting titles shots? A Cw match over 5 minutes on SD.....The world is ending, put on your tinfoil hats. I know people that claim to hate wrestling, but then say How cool Eddie is. He is WAY over still.

Smackdown lacks the energy of RAW in my opinion. Suprises hardly ever happen on this show. This show has been so dull lately Im actually glad Vince showed up. Im sorry but I find all the McMahons, except Linda, entertaining when used right. Vince might have become very stale, but he took a brake and know I think he should return. He could manage Kane in his feud with Taker.

This Smackdown has a very weak undercard except for the Mysterio. The Rumble looks ok but did anyone really think anyone besides Gurrero was going to win? Everyone knows Gurrero is going to N.W.O for a title shot.

No Way Out:

WORLD TITLE:
Eddie Gurrero vs. Brock Lesnar

U.S. TITLE:
John Cena vs. Big Show

CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE:
Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Gurrero

Kurt Angle vs. Hardcore Holly

(This card is already shaping up to be pretty weak. RAW is such the better show.)

I was at the show, and the croud was a good size. I really like whoever suggest that Angle be the one who took out eddie. This would make several things work out very well:

Eddie could beat Brock at no mercy, with "help" from angle. This would give eddie the world title he deserves (imagine- eddie with the world title and beniot was the royal rumble champ.. i am sure people here will find ways to complain, but it would be hard to do). Then angle coudl turn on eddie, setting up a THREE-part main event at wrestlemania. Angle v. Eddie for the world title; HHH v. beniot for the world title; Brock v. Goldberg. It woudl really suck if brock fought goldberg with no title on the line, so i think this is the best way to save the storyline. PLUS, who doesnt want to see eddie vs. angle at wrestlemania? just as a final note, when eddie and angle were in the ring at the end (first off, the croud was ALL eddie), they put on the best two-man royal rumble display I have ever seen. TONS of near "falls" for each guy- it was amazing to watch. Those guys are as good as there has ever been in the business, and they prove it time after time.

As for "Everyone" knowing eddie would win- maybe you should spend a little less time reading the internet if you want to not always know who will win. I used to always "know" cause i would read all these online things, but going to the show last night having not gone to any of those website, i really didnt know who would win out of eddie, angle and cena. They all seemed like legit possibilities, and i actually thought Angle would win cause he almost won at the rumble and I though eddie's intrafamily fued would continue...
