It seems comcast which owns G4 is buying TechTV to make one super tech/video game network combining the best shows off both. I watch G4 and I hope they keep most of their shows as I only dislike a few.

I'm not much of a PC gamer, so I don't watch too much Tech TV. However, I really dig the concept of G4 and hope they keep some of their main shows/personalities. (especially that saucy T-Dub on G4TV.com)
Anyway, the only problem I really have with the network is that their programs are just too frequent in rotation. I think a merger/combo of the two networks could end up being a blessing.

I don't watch Tech TV, but there are a lot of shows on G4 that I can do without. As long as Judgment Day, Filter, Portal and G4TV.com stay on the air, I can live without Cheat, Blister, Sweat, Icons, Starcade, Arena and especially Electric Playground. Arena used to be really good with Michael Louden, but the new guy has no charisma whatsoever, and Stacy Barselatta's hotness does not a show make (Diane Mizota's does, but that's another matter).

As long as Judgment Day stays (and Ronilyn Reilly but that is on a more creepy level that you guys want to hear nothing about) I will be happy.

Though you don't really realize how many times shows get aired until you put something on your Tivo Season Pass.

I think they'll keep Judgment Day, G4tv.com, pulse, and EP for sure since those are the most popular. I can see them keeping filter, and I really dig Icons and hope they keep it around (hey its interesting) as well as players. I hope Cory Rouse from cheat and Bill Sindelar from Blister stay with the network, but their shows need to go. You can feel free to ditch arena, portal, and sweat if you want.

Am I the only one who watches TechTV and doesn't get G4?

I suppose as long as the Screensavers and Call for Help go untouched, I'll be happy. I wonder what will happen to X-Play in all of this. (Will it even be necessary?) Robot Wars, Wired for Sex, Conspiracies, etc. would not be missed.

I guess as much as this makes sense (sounds like neither network can fill a schedule and that includes airing some *lesser* shows), I have a bad feeling they won't find the proper balance between games and tech stuff, and one of the networks will wind up dominating the other.

Nope, same here ... and please please PLEASE do not get rid of X-Play or Unscrewed (so I like Martin Sargent, sue me); leave those two shows be. They can scrap the rest of the Tech TV lineup and I wouldn't even blink.

What the story doesn't say is what effect all of this will have on DirecTV subscribers. If Comcast owns both properties, what's to stop them from making this new channel cable-only? Last I heard, there were never any plans to bring G4 over to satellite.

And I swear, if I lose my daily fix of Morgan Webb, heads WILL roll.

Finally we may be able to get rid of the awful show Portal...WHOO-HOO!

The problem is that, like others have said, there really isn't room for X-Play and Judgement Day. I actually watch both shows, but I have to hope that JD stays. Tommy and Vic are SO much more entertaining than Morgan and Adam.

From G4, I would keep Sweat, Cheat, JD, EP, and Starcade. I would give a facelift to Filter, G4TV.com and Blister, but I would still keep those shows. You can have Arena, Icons, Pulse and especially Portal.

Damn you WWE for making me change my sig. I'm sure you have good enough reasons to get rid of Shannon, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Let me thus be the first to say: BRING BACK DAFFNEY!

I think G4 has the potential, especially from a visual standpoint, but it needs more content. Comcast merging the two is, albeit consolidation and job loss, necessary -- because I don't think G4 is as much a money maker as Tech TV is.

That said -- keep Starcade, Judgement Day and Moviescape.

How to Make the Wienerboard a Better Place, Chapter 2: If you're going to make a smart-ass remark, make sure you know why you're saying it.
I don't get G4, so I can't talk about any of that. But leave Call for Help and Screen Savers alone. Take Adam Sessler out back and shoot his balding ass. You can pretty much kill the rest of the lineup, though. And if this does go through, BRING BACK VIDEO POWER. The game show version, not tips edition.

I have a gun!

Actually, is it me, or is he halfway tolerable when he is the one and only host on the show? It seems that everytime they add a co-host, it's like they also give him a permission slip to act like an immature idiot again.

Don't worry. There's at least one other person in the world who understands what you mean. As video game mascots go, that was the most random complation I've ever seen.

No, the problem is finding people who can host a show that actually PLAY VIDEO GAMES and enjoy them and can give an analysis of them and be entertaining all at once. Morgan's total lack of experience with anything video game related shows through almost every show, but I'm willing to forgive her since there aren't many pseudo-attractive women out there who will appear on a nerd show like X-Play and talk about things like Final Fantasy and Lord of the Rings.

Ultimately, X-play's problem is that it wants to appeal to the mainstream audience by being goofy and irreverant and having congenial hosts, but its the nature of TechTV itself to cater to the nit-picking uber-nerds who hate that stuff to begin with.

From here (gamespy.com):

While requests for comment and/or confirmation from G4 went unanswered, if the deal does indeed go through, it looks like a win-win. TechTV's San Francisco home would give G4 a well-needed link to an area with lots of game connections -- not only such software publishers as SCEA, Electronic Arts, Konami, and Ubisoft, but also the myriad media outlets dedicated to gaming. And G4's Los Angeles base would enable TechTV to connect with Hollywood, which may help it glitz up its presentation, and the Comcast connection would certain boost its penetration into more cable subscribers' homes.

However, there's always the chance that the deal won't go down as stated above. According to the Television Week news outlet, a representative of TechTV didn't confirm or deny the story, but said that he anticipated "an announcement before the end of the year," which means it's at least two weeks' overdue. And the same story said sources claimed that Sony Pictures Entertainment was also bidding for TechTV.

I'd say he's not being generous enough.

I've been trying to follow this as best I can, and here's what I gather:

-While TechTV has recently started to turn a profit and is seeing decent-good ratings increases, especially in their late night block, Paul Allen still wants to dump the channel.

-G4 has been an absolute financial flop for Comcast, but Comcast still thinks there is money in it, so rather than just dump the whole channel, they want to stick on top of an already established channel with a wider distribution.

-TechTV is currently filling time in which it cannot produce its own material with British import shows which are generally disliked by the fanbase and shows that, despite having nothing to do with the network, are actually making some fairly decent ad money (anime, Thuderbirds, Unscrewed).

-If the merger were to go down tomorrow, the idea would be to take out the British imports and schedule a mixture of G4 and TechTV shows that make up a full programming day.

-As I understand it the TechTV shows that are considered "safe" are:

Call For Help (which despite poor ratings is still considered one of the network's flagship shows)
The Screen Savers (a bit better rated, and again a signature)
Fresh Gear (which is, apparently, very well liked)
TechLive (with a probable upgrade, and hey, Chris Leary the Voice of Jakked!)
Unscrewed (which is actually among TechTV's higher rated shows)

I don't know enough about the G4 side of the story to really comment on what shows they're likely to keep and which one's they're likely to dump. A few of their shows could use some better production, and a few are completely unnecessary (a show about lists of games?).

As for X-Play v. G4 Content debate, X-Play is actually fairing quite well in its late night spot, but its so close to the content of G4, so I could see it becoming absorbed. I think Sessler stays on to host a gaming show of some sort, and giving Morgan some other venue to work on (given her level of popularity, especially among the 18-35 demos). What that would be, I don't know. Maybe they'd stick her back on Screen Savers, but I doubt it.

Fan of TechTV, but rarely watch G4. I do hope Starcade sticks around, and it would be neat to see a modern version. Part of my problem with G4 is that their programs aren't detailed in my channel guide. I have no idea what any of their shows are about other than Starcade.

It's like Howard Stern on E! Their description for every show is "The Radio Host films his daily radio show." or something. Give me some reason to flip over with a little description. Of course, that does just make me lazy, but what're ya gonna do.

And I like Adam Sessler. I appreciate someone willing to make themselves the butt of jokes to make an entertaining show. They give too many '3' ratings in my opinion, but I enjoy the show even tho the only console I have is a GameCube and can't play most of the games they review.

Edit: Of course, after I posted this, I clicked up to G4 on the digi and a few of their shows do have summaries now. D'oh.
