According to Lords of Pain, the WWE released referee Mike Sparks last night at the tapings as well.

Damn the WWE! Not letting those cruiserweight refs get over either! All those heavyweights like Patrick and Hebner...just cuz they're big, they get all the title matches? While smaller refs like Brian Hebner get the short end of the stick! I'm outraged!

Okay...now I'm reaching for things to complain about :)

Sparks is (was?), I believe, Earl Hebner's son-in-law.

Isn't Hebner's son also a ref for the company?

Yep...Brian is a ref on Smackdown. And while we're on the subject of the Hebner family tree, brother Dave is a WWE official as well, though only backstage.

Anyone else find it ironic that both parts of Smackdown Referee Goldust Sparks have been fired now?

Wasn't Dave in the WWF first, while Earl was the WCW ref until they brought him in as the evil doppelganger? It seems like the memory of Andre winning the belt included McMahon on commentary asking "Is that Dave Hebner? Or is THAT Dave Hebner?" when the second ref came out still freeing himself from his bindings.

Earl being in WCW is news to me, though I do know Dave used to be a WWE referee.

Satires just won't be the same.

Honestly, I won't cry too much for Mike Sparks. I'm sure he could find work in any Indy territory. But if his release helps save at least one wrestler from the dreaded roster cuts, then I'm glad he took the bullet.

Earl was an NWA referee back in the mid-80s - I specifically remember him working the Luger-Dusty cage match where Dusty won the US title at Starrcade 87.

He's not in the Flair DVD (Tommy Young was the Ric Flair ref of the 80's), but he was the ref in the Magnum/Tully cage match on the Bloodbath DVD, and I also believe he was in the Rock 'n Roll Express vs. Andersons match on the same DVD.
