I mean damn! Every week the audience is full Latino and you have Mysterio and Eddie coming out cutting promos in Spanish and everyone bugging out. And you also always have a heel come out and make fun of the Spanish and get tons of heat. Am I the only one that has noticed this? So much on Smackdown they are praising the Latino community that it has become riddiculise. Im not saying there is anything wrong with Latinos but does anyone else think its a bit much?

Every week seems like a big exaggeration. The fact is, Smackdown is the #1 rated show among Hispanics so when they go into markets like El Paso or San Diego where they have hometown heroes, they'd be stupid not to play it up.

How do you think Latinos feel about never having one of their own to cheer for in the Main Events? They support the product in droves yet hardly get the recognition.

Is that true? Now it makes all the sense in the world to me. I knew UPN appealed more to a ethic audience but I didn't know SD was being watched by that many Hispanics.

Yeah, I've read that too. When Eddie turned on Tajiri in the summer and got that push Smackdown was doing unbelievably well in Latino markets. Shouldn't come as much of a surprise, though...through the 60s and 70s champions of a distinct ethnic background were huge draws within their respective communities (ie. Sammartino with Italian fans, Morales with Hispanics, etc.).

first of all, Eddie and Rey aren´t latin, they have latin heritage. second, its nothing wrong with that, i mean is something cyclic, like when the nation of domination were in a good spot on raw no one said "oh, raw is the black pride show" or when bulldog or regal had a lot of tv time no one said" oh, the wwf(e) is the house of brit pride". thinking stuff like that is just plain racistic. 3rd for gods sake at last we have good latin wrestler like eddie, chavo and rey... c´mon in the 90´s we have savio vega.... savio vega for cryin out loud!!!!!!!!!!

You know what...Im sick and damn tired of getting edited on this message board, especially by you CRZ. Everytime someone makes a comedy post or touches on a contraversial topic they are censored. Im God Damn T.i.O and Im from the U.s.A where we believe in freedom of speech. You are taking the personality and life out of this board with censorship. Your a new age nazi! Go burn some books.

Back to the topic. I knew I would get hate regarding it but I'm sorry, I don't like it when someone cuts a promo in Spanish and I dont understand a freaking word. If I wanted that I would turn on Lucha Libre on Gala TV. And I have nothing against Latinos/Hispanics. CRZ is making it out to look like Im a racist. I would say the same thing if a Italian wrestler came out and spoke Italian or a Irish wrestler or whatever. And to the Hispanic/Latino characters dont you find the overly sterotypical Gurrero offensive.

And what Im pointing out in this post is true as McMahon and WWE are purposely trying to target Hispanic/Latinos because they realize they garner ratings.

I think I made some good points but by the time you read this it will proably say:

You know, i havent even noticed that there was a WWE catering thing to Latinos until this BMF guy posted it. When i see Eddie Guerrero and Rey, all i see are awesome workers. You can hail from Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Mars...most fans dont care and just want to be entertained.

Its not like the WWE is doing something new. There has been a ton of ethnic stars and the Fed has pushed them in certain territories. Pedro Morales, Bruno Sammartino, Tito Santana, etc.

Latino Pride? I mean, Eddie does a half spanish/half english promo in front of his hometown and garners one of the biggest pops of the year in a genuinely emotional moment and this is becoming a Latino Pride show? How is it a Latino Pride show when there's only 3 Latino wrestlers?

If anything, this thread should be about negative portrayals of ethnic groups in wrestling. African Americans have been portrayed as shuckin and jiving comedy wrestlers(Booker, The Cat) or savages (Kamala, Saba Simba), Latinos have been portrayed as "lying, cheating and stealing" (Los Guerreros comedy skits earlier this year, Asian wrestlers are sneaky and criminals (Tajiri and his Yakuza clan, Mr Fuji) and Arabian/Indian wrestlers are portrayed as Anti-American and evil (Iron Sheik, Tiger Ali Singh).

When Rey Mysterio Jr is on the screen, very few fans say "oh, there's that Mexican wrestler"...and those who do, are ignorant.

If you feel that Smackdown is becoming a Latin Pride show, dont watch it. You're the fool who is missing out on Rey Mysterio Jr, Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero, three hardworking wrestlers who demand respect for ability and becoming stars in a Fed that has often pushed caucasian wrestlers over minorities for decades.

If you're tired of being edited, perhaps you should go somewhere else. If you wanna talk demographics and markets that's one thing, but if you really have a problem when Eddie or Rey uses a line or two of Spanish in their promos, well, I don't have anything to say that's going to make you feel better. Deal with it. You've probably got bigger problems than what you can understand on a wrestling show.

I agree Eddie and Rey are great workers so why cant they just be pushed on that? Why must Eddie be a stereotypical Hispanic/Latino in a gimmick I think would be offensive. Why must Eddie come out and tell a story half in Spanish about how his grandma cheated to get into this country? The WWE is presenting these racist characters. I for one dont like them and they should let Eddies work ethic speak for himself. He didnt have this character in WCW. The fact of the matter is this....UPN produces shows that appeal to a ethic market. Thats why almost all of their sitcoms feature black actors/actresses. Im not saying theres anything wrong with that but WWE is purposely trying to play up to the Hispanic/Latino crowd and I think its wrong.

I think its wrong that a caucasian wrestler will come out a spit out a racist promo against Hispanics/Latinos saying such things as, "You mow my lawn." in order to garner heat. Racism and wrestling should not mix just like religion and wrestling should not mix. Thats the point I am trying to make.

Where to begin, where to begin...

...did it ever occur to you that Eddy ENJOYS doing the character, as he's said repeatedly in interviews?

I can *almost* understand why you would complain about Eddy's character - as unfounded as it might be - but what the heck is so offensive about Rey's character, anyway? Did I miss something? Ooh, he speaks Spanish. He KNOWS Spanish and he's got Mexican roots. What's the problem here? Would you prefer they act like he's a good ol' USA American, just because he's actually from San Diego (which has a big Hispanic population, by the way)? It's WHO HE IS.

He's not getting pushed just because of his character, he's getting pushed because of his character AND because he's one of the best wrestlers in the promotion and everybody can obviously see that. Ditto Rey.

And he pretty much DID have this character in WCW; just no accent and no "Latino Heat" nickname. Did you WATCH it when he was there, or are you a brand-new fan that thinks wrestling started with the WWE? Once he turned heel, he was ALWAYS a lying and cheating bastard. Where the hell do you think "Cheat To Win" came from?

You've spent this entire thread acting like there IS something wrong with that; if there wasn't, why are you complaining about it? Make up your mind.

And since the WWE does have a large Hispanic crowd at the moment, you think they should ignore it and not play up to it with characters geared toward them? If that's what your audience is and that's what they want, GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT! Isn't that what Vince McMahon keeps saying the WWE's supposed to be doing? Everybody always laughs and calls him on that, but the one time he actually IS doing it, you're COMPLAINING?

The only point here is the one on your head. Ooh, a flame.

If you're going to take the time to flame others (hi, Z) and try to make your quote-unquote "points", try to know of what you're speaking.

Eddie led a stable called the LWO. If that doesn't play up to his ethnicity, I don't know what does.

As for lying? I'm sure he turned on a number of guys in WCW.

Stealing? I remember the Filthy Animals (the original group, Eddie, Rey, Konnan, Kidman) beating down Ric Flair and taking his wallet.

There's a reason so many Latinos are in the audience. In Mexico wrestling is taken very seriously. And Rey Rey at least is an authentic luchadore. His style is Mexican wrestling.

Considering race when deciding who to push is a matter of demographics. I don't approve, but since it is getting Rey Rey pushed, I won't complain.

I don't know why I'm writing this. It'll be banned soon enough, and should be. I just wanted to get my two cents in.

I'd take the opposite tack and say they should be pushing hispanics harder. Eddy should be after Heavyweight title. Cahvo US title. Building programs around Rey. Paul London should be stealing Nidia , etc.

The reason the crowds are largely Latino has nothing to do with the UPN having minority oriented programming.

The only people still watching the WWE are Latinos...I'd go as far as saying the only people still watching wrestling in the US are Latinos. Both the WON and Torch have commented on backstage joking that the only place that they sell out is in SouthWest or large Latino enclaves. Smackdown has a huge Latino rating.

In a discussion on wrestlers height and drawing ability on Wrestlingclassics

http://wrestlingclassics.com/ .ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=045574

Meltzer wrote on Hijo Del Santo in Georgia "the only guy on the indie scene capable of drawing more than 1,500 fans, and has done as many as 4,000 in 2003, and when he did it, it was just about double the paid that WWE did just a few weeks later for a Smackdown taping in the same building".

That was in Georgia, not even Texas or Southwest. Mexican American audience for wrestling in US is huge.

(I think there is a link to my review of that show somewhere here or it can be found somewhere on dvdvr.com, I hope Rippa hasn't deleted it)

More Meltz:

"The biggest house show draw and the only guy who on his own moves tickets right now is Guerrero, who is 5-6 1/2 legit, although he probably weighs more than 210. For a short peroid of time, Guerrero was the biggest ratings draw on the show, but they failed to capitalize on the opportunity the audience created. He's pushed consistently as a mid-carder since 2000 and his last major singles program with Show, he was booked to look to have zero chance against him and was basically squashed by him on PPV. The fact he can move tickets the way he's booked is remarkable. "

There is this large Mexican-American audience for the WWE's product and they really aren't exploitning it/capitalizing on it. If Eddy can move tickets the way he's currently being booked...imagine how well he could move tickets if he was actually promoted strong.

And Meltzer again:

"The second biggest ticket mover on the Smackdown brand right, since Undertaker left, is Mysterio, who is 5-2. What small-sized markets has Lesnar drawn 6,000 paid in of late? Cena may get nice crowd reactions, but he's not shown he can draw ratings."

Is the WWE really milking this Latino Audience? I'd say no. Given how big an audience they are...there should be alot more Latino Pride stuff.

Why isn't Tito Santana on commentary?

Why doesn't Chavo hold the Us belt?

When's the last time Nidia spoke Spanish?

Paul London got mic time?

Nidia did speak Spanish with Rey after a match with Noble...

You can understand what Chavo and Eddie say because they either repeat it in English (i.e. Tu es loco, man, you crazy!) or it would probably get bleeped in English. :-)

Wrestling has always been big among latinos/chicanos/hispanics/whatever the "in" word is now; obviously lucha libre but we tend to like the whole athletic stuff/fighting/hot chicks type thing.

And it just happens to be the fastest-growing minority group in the US...
