Associated Press KILN, Miss. -- Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre's father died Sunday of a heart attack or a stroke while he was driving, Mississippi state police said. Irvin Favre was 58.
Favre went off the road at 5:23 p.m. near Kiln, the hometown of Brett, a three-time NFL most valuable player. Irvin Favre ran into a ditch, said Sgt. Joe Gazzo of the Mississippi State Highway Patrol.
"It didn't appear that the accident was serious enough to cause him to be unconscious, so that leads us to believe that a medical condition was what caused him to go off the road," Gazzo said.
Irvin Favre was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m.
An autopsy will be performed Monday.
"First, the witnesses, then the ambulance, and then at the hospital they tried to revive him," Gazzo said. "It's going to be a great loss to the community, he was a great guy." ---------------------------------------------------------
This news has completely saddened and shocked me. I can echo the trooper in saying that Irvin Favre was a great guy, in Green Bay's community as well. I had the chance to catch him on the radio the last time I was home--he was a funny guy who was really proud of his son. RIP Irvin. My thoughts and prayers go out to Brett and his family.
If I can be serious for a minute... Nobody would've blamed Brett if he didn't want to play tonight, but damn, the man is a warrior just to have the courage to suit up. This will be a surreal game to watch tonight, to say the least.
Call me crazy, but I think it's 100% right for Brett to play tonight. As a NFL player, there are only 16 (not including playoffs) out of 365 days in the year where you HAVE to be there if you are physically able. It's unfortunate that his dad passed away and I wouldn't blame him if he sat out (nor would I ask him to play if he did not wish to), but his guys are counting on him for tonight's game. I'd tell him after the game to not come back until Saturday, then we'll get you ready for Sunday's game.

As someone who has lost a parent in the last month, I know how free time can mess with your mind and make you so sad and numb and just hopelessly lost knowing your loved one is gone forever.
Maybe he can channel that sadness, even for one series, and use it to his advantage to keep his mind off things, even for a little while.
I wouldn't be surprised if he just played a series or just the 1st half...
What a better way to help you through a tough time, than to do something you totally love. I imagine he consulted with his family first...and his dad would have wanted him to play. I hope the Raider's fans DON'T have signs that say anything...that would be just terrible.
Rikidozan, I am sorry to hear of your loss as well. I can't even imagine losing one of my parents. :(
RIP Irvin Favre (1945-2003) My thoughts and prayers are with Brett & his family.
I can't imagine what the mood will be in Oakland tonight. No matter all of his injuries, this will be the hardest test of Favre's life to try and physically perform on the field. I couldn't imagine doing anything besides weeping uncontrollably if one of my parents died.
Rob asks Dave and Ric if they want to go backstage to play Hungry Hungry Hippos and Flair and Batista immediately bail. Flair wants to be Green. Man, EVERYBODY wants to be green. Except the girl in the commercials. She wanted to be pink. That either means that the ad agency was sexist or that she was communist. Of course Hungry Hungry Hippos is a rather capitalist game isn’t it? No self respecting communist would play Hungry Hungry Hippos. Except Stalin. He LOVED Hungry Hungry Hippos. You know, I just can't call it the "WWE." I just can't. My body's rejecting it like a bad liver transplant.-- Bill Simmons, espn.com/page2
Knowing Brett, he's probably dedicating the game to his dad.
That's sad, with it being Christmastime and all. Two co-workers of mine had relatives who passed away very recently too. Seems like a depressing holiday season.
Irvin Favre was a frequent contributor to the Packer Radio Network post-game show. He'd loved his son AND football.
I've always doubted the statements made about someone saying "The deceased would have wanted you to play the game", but I can definitely believe it in this case.
I echo the many sentiments given already in this thread on the passing of Irvin Favre.
However, I do have some other breaking news (as deemed by the NBC station here in Milwaukee)...Brett Favre will start for the Packers tonight in Oakland. This means one of two things: Brett will throw for 6 touchdowns or 6 interceptions.

It's not quite halftime yet, but you're not far off.
And the Lord said, "Behold! I give unto thee..." Oh, man. That was, as Swordsman Yen said, surreal. What game by Favre.

Today's game of Tampa Bay vs. Orlando was very good. The only problem was that they showed Jon Gruden a lot. I mean, once a quarter is fine, but after every few plays, they cut to a shot of Gruden.
