It's "The American Soldier." Kind of a cop out pick if you ask me...
CRZ, I agree. The soldiers are great and all but really the man of the year as much as I hate to say it is Saddam Hussein. Remember in the past they selected people like Hitler. This is supposed to reflect who had massive impact, etc, not give people the warm fuzzies. Although it's a safe choice, it's another example of how utterly nebulous big media is becoming.
Bush and Blair certainly were the ones that really influenced world news for most of the year, starting with the prep and then invasion of Iraq, and the followup to it. Then to grab the headlines again at the end with catching Saddam and putting Gaddafi on the sidelines.
I think Bush won twice - I know he won in 2000, who won last year?
As for Dean, maybe next year. Fact of the matter is - most of the year, no one except people like us even knew who he was. Next year, he's gonna be the President-elect.
EDIT: Oh, that's right - the corporate whistleblowers.

Well I think this is a GREAT pick. But then again I wore the uniform till May of this year so Im biased. ;-)
And I dont think they ever chose Hitler, there was a controversy in 1999 because some thought he should be picked as person of the century. Not because he was great but because he influenced almost all world events post 1939. the WWII itself, the Holocaust, the Cold War, the Nuclear age. etc, etc. And then there were some who said the American Soldier should be the person of the century then too.
And why shouldnt they choose the American Soldier? Its not Bush or Blair that is really fighting the war on terror or bringing freedom to Iraq, its soldiers on the ground, in the ai and in those ships.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Hitler Time's first Person of the Year? I know he was selected.

Hitler was Time's Man of the Year of 1938. He was not the first, as this dates back to 1927.
Let's see, corporate whistleblowers, now American soldiers, they are moving away from individuals and toward groups and entities. I figure before the end of the decade, the award will go to "All the people of the world", in an effort to be as non-controversial as possible.
Everything that is wrong in this world can be blamed on Freddie Prinze Jr.
Well, they gave it to the planet Earth in 1988. Does that count?

A safe yet respectable pick, sure more commendable thzn a bunch of soccermom whistleblowers.
What was wrong with this pick? Was speaking up against your company's massive, massive, MASSIVE fraud a bad thing?
Person of the century, if you're going by overall influence, should've been Gavrilo Princip.
Rob asks Dave and Ric if they want to go backstage to play Hungry Hungry Hippos and Flair and Batista immediately bail. Flair wants to be Green. Man, EVERYBODY wants to be green. Except the girl in the commercials. She wanted to be pink. That either means that the ad agency was sexist or that she was communist. Of course Hungry Hungry Hippos is a rather capitalist game isnt it? No self respecting communist would play Hungry Hungry Hippos. Except Stalin. He LOVED Hungry Hungry Hippos. God, Ive got no clue what the hell Im rambling about anymore.-- Matt "Excalibur05" Hocking, Raw Satire writer extraordinaire
You know, I just can't call it the "WWE." I just can't. My body's rejecting it like a bad liver transplant.-- Bill Simmons, espn.com/page2

Princip was a punk, like all other assasins. Do you think he was really more influential than, say, Oswald. WW Uno would have eventually kicked off anyway. The Kaiser was anxious for a visit to France, the Balkens, as always, were just wishing for a war and there was mucho tension.
The person with the most influence in the 20th century (THIS is the 21st, BTW) is probably Ford for the assembly line or the Wright Bros for Flight or maybe Lenin/Trotsky/Stalin for Communism.

AWA is right, WWI was going to happen sooner or later with all the mutual aid pacts etc., in place and the Kaiser's wish to out Britain Britain. Besides the peole you listed I might add Jack Kilby and the other gentleman who gave us the technology to usher in the computer age.
And no one is dissing the American or British soldiers. We all owe alot to them but this was a cop out feel good pick. The one things this points out is the fallacy of the media as a shill for the left and proves they are in business to make money more than espouses a political philosphy.

That's all well and good, but to say Princip was not influential because it was going to happen is like saying Lincoln was not influential because the Civil War was going to happen anyway. It would have, but the influence was there.
As far as the most influential people of the 20th century; Wright Brothers, Bill Gates, Lenin, Allen Du Mont(television pioneer)...
Well, I am. If I'm going to have to deal with hype, I'd rather it be political discourse over a dog saying "I smell gifts." (Canadian Tire ads) The date is set: 23rd of January.
