I've been looking for this story all over the web, so I don't know if it's true or not. I was listening to Jim Rome a few days ago and he had a story about a high school band geek from Indiana. Somehow, by mistake, he was given a scholarship to Purdue University for basketball.
The kid, thinking fast on his feet signed all the papers so the scholarship would be legal and binding. When the school found out they got the wrong kid they tried to talk him out of it, but he wouldn't budge.
Since the kid is staying on the team, the coaches are going to press on him hard to go to every practice, weight lifting session, and all other team functions.
I'm having doubts as to whether the story is true or not, leaning more towrds the latter since I can't seem to verify it. Stil though, if it is true, that is pretty fucking cool for that kid. I wish that would happen to me. Even if everyone on the team hates your guts, it would still be a sweet expirience.

Not true. The fact that Jim Rome ran with it before checking facts just shows what a buffoon he is. The story got lifted from a humor newspaper. Totally bogus story. Rome's a rube.
Don't get on Rome too hard...he said from the start the story was so hard to believe that it likely wasn't true, and did say within the hour that the story was, in fact, bogus.
Still funny, though.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are built for the playoffs. Of course they are. What Leafs fans don't realize, though, is "built for the playoffs" is just GM-speak for "short on skill, kinda slow, and can't score over an 80 game season".
