The best team in the league (argh) just got stronger.

Too bad for the Oilers...they got nothing in return for him.

Any thoughts?

Great pickup for the Flyers. I think Comrie's better suited for the Western Conference but he should do fine once he shakes off the rust.

I couldn't be happier, but one thing escapes me...

How did the Flyers trade for a skilled player rather than someone who isn't big and slow? Did Clarke phone in sick today?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are built for the playoffs. Of course they are. What Leafs fans don't realize, though, is "built for the playoffs" is just GM-speak for "short on skill, kinda slow, and can't score over an 80 game season".

This morning on SportsCenter, TSN had a giant quote from Clarke, from last month, about how the Flyers had "no use" for a small center like Comrie.

I do wonder what happened to change his mind.

He woke up one morning and thought "Hey, after our yearly playoff flameout, Comrie will be a perfect candidate to be This Year's Scapegoat."

Jeff Woywitka, the minor league defenseman that we sent to Edmonton, is actually pretty solid. The pairing of the future was going to be Pitkanen and Woywitka. Now Dennis Seidenberg is the top minor league defensive prospect here in Philly.

Mike Comrie is good people, he should be a great pickup.

Woywitka was awesome in last year's World Juniors. Comrie wasn't staying in Edmonton no matter what so at least they continue their trend of stocking up on good young prospects.

Ah, of course. That should have occurred to me.

I was thinking that since the Flyers are playing so well, Clarke decided that he needed to screw with the team chemistry.

Ya Woywitka is pretty good, plus the 1st could be good and
comrie didnt want to stay anyways.
only time will tell if the deal is a success for the oilers.

I have to say that Philly always seems to pick up strong players. Still, despite all that firepower, are they really solid enough in goal?

They're a lot weaker than they were with Cechmanek. (Or would've been if they'd kept Boucher, or would've been if they hadn't pissed away Maxime Ouellet in Clarke's worst... trade... ever.)

And now good ol' Bobby has pissed away Eric Chouinard. It's not like he was getting much playtime anyway, but we're not even really getting anything back for him. Is there ANY way that Flyers management can be convinced to invalidate Clarke's lifetime contract?

Socks: Jeff Woywitka is a very solid young prospect. He is a top 10 draft pick I believe and would be in a Flyers uniform if it wasn't a numbers game. Hitchcock said that he would not keep a young player as a 7th defenseman and that he would be better off playing in juniors or with the Phantoms than sitting out with the big club. They have 2 young defensemen in the lineup currently. 3 young defensemen are just to many to start in one year.

Mr. Heat Miser: The reason Clarke made a trade for a center is that LaPointe just left the team to go into therapy for depression. The team has no idea how long he will be gone and now only have 3 natural centers. Recchi had been playing out of position. The answer was either trade for Comrie or bring up Peter White.

I have been one of Clarke's critics for years on this and other boards but Hitchcock is the one in power now and it is apparent from this past offseason. They needed to do something to address the weakness at the center position. The Flyers usually carry 5 centers but they had 4. If Lapointe does not come back before All Star Break I expect another deal for a grinding center.

The real problem with the deal is that with the expected lockout next year nobody wants to add a high priced player so the Flyers had to trade a prospect.

At this point, they Oilers lost out on at least a 20 goal scorer, not to mention one of their top 2 centre's. A prospect who may play for them regularly in the next 2 years doesn't help them now.

I really think Lowe lost on this one.
