Really, I'm not surprised. Just one more instance of a conservative's hypocracy when it comes to moral/sexual issues. Yes, I'm looking at you Bob Barr, Newt Gingrich, and Henry Hyde.
Because I try not to just rag on conservatives, yes there are plenty of instances of liberal hypocracy also. The one that annoys me the most is the big business types with non-union companies.
I wonder how much money George W. Bush gave Paris Hilton.
Because it was a good way to get the segregationist vote?
When Senator Thurman had out-of-wedlock sex with his alleged daughter's mama, I doubt that his primary purpose was to make babies. Believing that black people (or women in general) are inferior to you is usually not much of a disincentive to sleeping with them, historically speaking. Your average white plantation owner is responsible for the fact that your average slave-descended African-American has about twenty percent European DNA in his genetic makeup. Not only is having biracial children not a barrier to believing in segregation, it wasn't even a barrier to putting them on the auction block.
Thurmond spent the last 40 years doing all he could to shake that past, and has lots of respect among the blacks down here. Too bad it's easier to not forgive since he didn't go liberal after being a KKK member for half his life like Byrd.

Thurmond falls into the same category as Byrd and George Wallace...somewhere, someway, they'll pay for their racism. They'll pay double for a "change of heart" to get votes.

Yeah, but we're talking about something that happened in 1925, years before he ran for President on the
"I want to tell you, ladies and gentleman, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigger race into our theatres, into our swimming pools, into our homes and into our churches."
platform.
"I already know nobody likes me. I don't need a whole holiday season to rub it in." - Charlie Brown
Robert Byrd is a Democrat, not a liberal. Not even close. Even Republicans would agree with that.
Strom gets "lots of respect among the blacks down here?" (Jesus, please tell me you're black. Please). I'd be really interested to see how many of them express that "respect" with, say, a vote. My guess is not too many.
The point is not atoning for his past or not. And the point is not that having bi-racial children is or is not a barrier to believing in segregation. The point is that at a time when his publically stated political position said "I think it should be ILLEGAL for black people and white people to have sex" - and indeed it was illegal for black people and white people to have sex in South Carolina, and in 1925 that "crime" was quite often cause for a lynching - Strom was, in his personal life, quite happily engaging. Now, if ol' Strom has said "you know what, I got some tail, she wasn't white, the world didn't end, and now I support the abolition of these laws" I wouldn't call him a hypocrite. Heck, maybe if he had even said this before FOURTY YEARS LATER I would have a little respect for him. But he didn't so I don't.
