I promise to actually fill one of these out in '04. I haven't done one yet, but let's face it, this wasn't the year for me to start. Not much substance this year, which explains why I thought a lot of the "Worst..." answers were fucking hilarious. A few of the most notable:

In the "Worst Wrestling Move" rejected list, the last one threw me off:

"REJECTED - no performer named

1 0 0 chokeslam
0 1 0 big boot
0 1 0 diving headbutt
0 0 1 powerbomb
0 0 1 sleeper hold
0 0 1 hiring the Cat"

I died laughing. Also, just seeing the "Least Favorite Wrestler" list every year brings a tear to my eye.

Least Favorite Wrestler

1991: Hulk Hogan
1992: Hulk Hogan
1993: Hulk Hogan
1994: Hulk Hogan
1995: Hulk Hogan
1996: Hulk Hogan
1997: Hulk Hogan
1998: Hollywood Hogan
1999: Hulk Hogan
2000: Hulk Hogan
2001: Buff Bagwell
2002: Triple H

**2003**: Triple H

With the exception of Buff the Stuff's breakout year in '01 (or rather, breakout match on RAW against Booker T), I guess it's safe to assume that HHH going toe-to-toe with Hogan at Backlash 2002 was Hogan's TRUE passing of the torch during his WWE stints. Let's see if HHH has another eight years in him to tie Hulk's record.

*sigh* Had I remembered to vote, La Resistance would've been able to take their well-deserved spot as the lone Worst Tag Team of 2003...

It does my heart good to see Angle/Benoit win MOTY honors.... usually a bout this great, this early in the year is forgotten.

Yeah, kind of like the much better Kobashi/Misawa bout.

But that would require watching something besides the 2nd worst wrestling organization. Isn't XPW bankrupt, though, thus disqualifying it?

-I'm pretty surprised that Kurt Angle won so many of the *big* awards while missing some major time during the year.

-I'm also very dissapointed that Raven was beat out by Brock Lesnar for best brawler.

-Cena over Big Show as most improved ...I can see it but I don't agree with it. Cena also beat out Matt Hardy for best gimmick, but I guess Cena is getting over whether I like it or not.

-I still don't get all the hatred towards A-Train, Mark Henry and The Big Show.

-Where's the love for Rodney Mack as the beater of white boys?

-The TNA vote wasn't big enough to take anything again, and Tenay was screwed.

My vote really didn't hold much weight because it went to a lot of 'B' wrestlers and guys *we* just don't like, but it was nice to see some others vote the same way.

I'm curious as to how much the last minute *rube* votes swayed things in the end. It was a lot of info to take in, and I'm sure it was a pain to organize. Nice work Z.

Agreed with most of the winners this year. Though I hope many agree with me when I say that AMW got the royal hose this year.

Admit it. You laughed too when you found out Brock was feuding with Sparky Plugg.

As long as they held a card in the year in question, it still qualifies. The AWF was third in 1997, despite only holding cards in the November 1996 period.

I'm not surprised Angle/Benoit took match of the year, but I am a bit surprised that Tajiri beating Mysterio for the CW title didn't even make the list. That was probably my favorite match of the year.

You have no idea how much restraint it takes for me to not answer that straight line with a MILLION* different zingers, but I have great fear of putting you over the edge and indirectly causing you to put out another one of those "I was a worker...for five minutes. NOW PITY ME" columns.

Not really, i'd say the million anklelock/crossfaces were smarter than Mits and Kenta firing off almost every dangerous move in their arsenal save TD'91 and Diamondhead. although it should be higher especially considering some of the junk that was in that category.

In all honesty, I haven't seen Angle/Benoit yet, so I can't really say if Misawa/Kobashi was better. I was really just trying to point out how full of crap most of the contributors to the list are, calling WWE the 2nd worst fed (right behind a fed that doesn't exist anymore and barely even existed for some time before that), yet watching nothing but that federation, and then thinking they present any sort of definitive view on pro-wrestling.

First, thanks again for doing the labor, CRZ. These awards are always a fun part of the winding-down-of-the-year activities.

I know I shouldn't be the one to talk, since I've had a WWF bias since I started getting into this back in '98, but something is wrong when out of forty-five awards, all but three go to the WWE. (Most Disappointing News Item: Death of Curt Hennig, Best Promotional Move: NWA:TNA's $.01 PPV, Worst Promotion: XPW). The only reason the WWE didn't get one more is because XPW was 'alive' for a few extra months. I'll concede the argument that since the WWE is the most dominant North American promotion, that dominance should allow them to sign the best talent and put on the best matches/shows (even though they didn't, imho). But then there's no excuse as to why the WWE swept the Worst-of Awards (with the aforementioned exception of Worst Promotion).

I suppose it all makes sense. The WWE may have all the worst talent (Jones, Steiner, HHH, etc.) for the year, but the good stuff put out by having the best talent (Angle, Jericho, Cena, etc.) was more than enough to cancel it out.

My problem with this is that I don't think the WWE had ALL the best or worst of things this year.

Really, my problem is that after two watchings, I still don't (and never did) think Angle-Benoit was all that great. Heck, the Iron Man match, which I loathed (and only voted as third worst match, mostly as a protest vote) only got one other negative vote. (Someone voted for it as the #1 worst match). However, thirty-one people liked it enough to make it the third best match of the year overall.

Now, a great part of this is that a vote is really a sample of opinion, and I can't dispute that apparently more people strongly liked that match than strongly disliked that match (into which group I fall), but the problem is that because the WWE is the dominant North American promotion, they are guaranteed more exposure than any other promotion, and the only way for us fans/voters to be informed is to seek out other sources of wrestling - 'good' wrestling - and watch that. The problem with that, though, is that if I become an RoH mark and hit them a few times a year, and someone in Ohio, who can't go to RoH shows becomes an OVW fan, even if we both cast our number one vote for someone from our respective promotion, we'll still probably wind up voting for someone from the WWE in our second or third slot, and that cancels out our strongest opinions. (And never mind those who only watch WWE.)

I'm inclined to say that as long as the WWE has a virtual monopoly over North America, maybe we should consider dividing the awards like they previously were between Japan and North America. This time, however, the lines would be WWE and non-WWE. Or maybe there should be a multiplier/handicap applied to wrestlers who aren't visible on a large stage.

Or maybe next year we should just re-adjust the awards so that there is one vote on "promotion with greatest exposure". This way, the WWE will be sure to sweep.

Angle-Benoit has got to be the most overrated match this year. Angle didn't sell *at all*, hell, he didn't even seem to know Benoit was working the neck. Plus, all of the silly counters to the finishers at the end? Cmon,

It's too bad, there is so much great US wrestling, it just doesn't have the exposure. London/Dragon 4/12 was MoTY.

The thing that bugs me about this just about every year is that there are the same set of posts (by different people, so I assume people are learning or giving up or something) saying "this whole thing is dumb because those [ECW/WWF/WCW/WWE] fans monopolized the whole thing and didn't give credit to the good (but rarely bad) stuff that happened in [non-ECW indy/Japan]". And quite often, these are people who had the same chance as anyone else but didn't send in a ballot (only 2 first place votes for WJ as worst promotion is a kinda a tell.)

(I hope no one says "my vote wouldn't have changed things" when there were only 133 ballots.")

I mean, it's an open election. Vote for who you think is best, or vote against who you think everyone is going to vote for to non-confirm, or just fill you ballots for things you figure will be under represented in the final outcome so you know they get at least a little more mention (<------), but I don't see why you don't bother to vote. And I don't see why you'd bother to complain if you didn't vote - you obviously didn't care then, so why would it bug you now?

The other thing is people critic the results as "a batch of experts giving a definitive view of pro-wrestling" when the process is really "fans who are savvy enough to find a link (or a friend who'll give it to them) vote on what they think is best/worst". Ain't the same thing. Don't expect it to be something it didn't set out to be.

(I don't know who voted or who didn't vote, so please don't take that as a shot agianst anyone in this thread. Well, I cribbed that line from eviljonhunt but only to make my point so I hope he doesn't hate me in the morning.)

I hope I made any sense but it's 1AM now so I'm not betting on it.

I guess you could say I 'learned' this year, if anything.

I hope no one takes my bitching above too seriously. I'm just a little disappointed my opinion on most of the awards was in the minority. I'm not saying the whole thing is dumb as much as I'm trying to find a way to 'justify' my views.

Edit:

And as far as the "rarely bad" part, my dislike of Homicide and Ace Steel is visible if you sift through some of the negative awards...
