What free agent (or easily traded for) pitching is still available? I think Millwood, Colon, Foulke and Javier Vasquez are all out there for the taking. If the Sox were smart, they'd continue spending on quality pitching and let the Yanks have Sheffield and Vlad Guerrero.

Giving Sheffield any more than a 1 year contract will be a disaster.

Wasn't Vlad in favor of NOT playing in a big-time market? All the rumors I've heard about him have been connecting him to teams not named either New York or Boston. I would put stock in those rumors, until I hear that he signs with the Yanks - something that I don't really see happening.

Per Sheff: I'm glad to see that the Yankees are overspending for a position that has produced underachievers over the last few years. I wonder if it's in the contract that if you play RF, you must suck. Not that I'd complain.

As for pitching, I figure the Sox are out of it; they've got Pedro, Schilling, and Lowe for now. They'll make a (successful?!) run at A-Rod, move some salary around, then hold onto what's left and prepare to try and resign Pedro in 2004.

Well, he's got 3 years at 38 million. I'm not going to pretend this is a bad move for the Yanks, as Sheffield is coming off a hell of a season, and he's a hell of a hitter.
Beyond that, they've replaced that black hole in right field with one of the best hitters in the game. That's one hell of an upgrade, from Jailbird Garcia to Gary Sheffield. On the other hand, he is 35 years old, and he's not Vlad Guerrero.

Now that they've locked Sheffield up, where does that put next season's payroll? I ask only out of curiousity, because we know the Yanks have no ceiling. But they do have to sign three more starters. Wells can be had cheap, but Pettite and Colon won't be, and trading for Vazquez will likely require the expenditure of Nick Johnson.

Bottom line for me is that while this was a good move for the Yanks, I'm still not scared of 'em at this point.

Palp, we should always fear the Yankees. If there is a big name player anywhere in the world that isn't under contract, we should fear the Yankees. As long as George Steinbrenner is the owner, we should fear the Yankees.

We don't have to publicly admit it, but we should always fear the Yankees.

Or bitchy early-90's form, when he produced early for Milwaukee, got unhappy pretty quickly, and slid into the Sheffield Funk...where he seemed to stay for quite a while.

Brewers Karma, baby. MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Star wipe, and...we're out.

I don't see any way that's possible, especially since it's only one provider.
