The FAN in New York is reporting that Arizona has reached a deal to send Curt Schilling to Boston for Casey Fossum and some minor leaguers. (They say there is an unconfirmed report that Fossum will then be sent to Milwaukee for Richie Sexson.)
Schilling has the power to veto the trade, and the Sox now have three days (from when the commisioner approves the deal) to reach a contract extention deal with Schilling to get him to agree to the trade.
This is potentially huge for the Red Sox. They really need to get the deal done, especially since the indication is that if Schilling does veto the deal, he's likely to end up in Yankee pinstripes.
I just heard this reported on 1510 the Zone here in Boston as well. I like it (if it happens, of course), although will his body last 3 more years? How was his health last year? I know he was injured, I am just not sure of what happened.
His injuries were both flukes. He was out over a month after having his appendix removed (seems likely this will happen again :>), and the other time was when a ball came back and hit him on his pitching hand. His record (8-9) was better than it sounds, as the Diamondbacks couldn't score any runs. His ERA was still under 3, which was the best indicator, especially in a hitters part, as BOB is. This should be a trade that helps both teams, as Sexson will give the D-Backs some power (with Brandon Webb moving into the #2 role and Villareal coming into the rotation), and Schilling giving the Sox Martinez/Schilling as a 1-2 punch...
A few thoughts contigents upon Schilling not vetoing the trade: Thank you Bud Selig and the Milwaukee Brewers for being so cheap, so we can trade Fossum to Zona for Schilling and they can then dump him on the Brew Crew for Sexton. I guess there really is a good reason for the Brewers still to exist. Second, all fans of the Orioles, Blue Jays and Devil Rays: Welcome to the AL East version of ThermoNuclear War. Perhaps you should start focusing on 2005, because now the Yankees and Red Sox are just going to battle to the death for 2004.
Why Pro Wrestling proves the INS cannot keep terrorists out of the United States: If a felon like Nathan Jones is allowed into the United States with no special skills (unless being totally inept in the ring counts, but I think there are enough totally inept people in the US to keep that skill from being unique or special), then how the hell can they justify keeping anyone else out?

Ah, the master plan comes together. With Vlad Guerrero, the division is ripe for us to steal it next year.
Hopefully...

As pleased as I would be to see Schilling pitching for the Red Sox, I must still come down on the side of BEATING BUD SELIG IN THE HEAD WITH A SHOVEL (figuratively speaking) for getting rid of one of the few things that's good about this franchise.
Memo to Bud: Sending good players packing does not equal more asses in Miller Park seats.
Ye gods.

"figuratively speaking"? Only "figuratively speaking"?
*sigh*
I'm all in favor of a public flogging for Selig(s) if both deals go through. If the D-Backs and Sox are going to take advantage of the Brewers, hell, they might as well - it's obvious management will let them.

Too bad the O's are too busy keeping a team out of Washington to successfully compete with NY and Boston.

Hey I have always wanted a team in DC to put a spark up their asses to get them moving...

Steal? Nah. But someone's gotta finish second (after the Yanks melt down and finish DFL, inspired by Sheffield's example).
In all seriousness, though, Baltimore NEEDS Vlad, and I'd love to see him go to the O's, just so they can be competitive.

Ah, but Schilling will most likely get Terry Francona the manager's job for the Sox if he were to OK the trade, which I wouldn't call a great idea. Francona is pretty much a hands-off manager, and when in Philly, Schilling was able to talk Francona into letting him stay in games longer than he should have.

Boston can have the division...I just want my Jays to get the wild card. The Yankees are due for an implosion.

It's official as of approx. 6pm Friday night. IN THEO WE TRUST
As far as Vlad and the Yanks, I think NY is trying to get prices down. As the biggest spender, and really the only guaranteed big spender, they have that power.
The BoSox are going to make their run now, especially with Nomar and Pedro in the last years of their contracts. I don't see them keeping both of them after 2004.
Attempted murder... really. Do they give a Nobel Prize for Attempted Chemistry?

Many of us will be shocked if Nomar is still with the Red Sox when calendar year 2004 begins.

Haven't heard the Mia angle on the story, but if so, make those dumbass rumors true. You thought you'd be creaming/crapping yourselves when we got Schilling, plop A-Rod into that park... daaaaamn.
The Yankees appear to be on the verge of saying "I'll see your Schilling and raise you a Sheffield." Dammit. Hopefully Sheff reverts to his injury-prone mid-90's form.
