Thought I'd put this out for discussion.

If the All-Star game counts, don't make it so that every team has to be represented. If the fourth-best player on the Red Sox or Yankees or Braves or Cubs is better than the best player on the D-Rays or Tigers or Mets or Padres, don't let anyone from the lesser teams on. This will eliminate a lot of bitching about who deserves to be on the All-Star team more, and help the overall "competitive" nature of the game.

One more shot at Selig while I'm at it: Since the All-Star game started deciding home field in the World Series, the home team has never won the World Series. I know it's only been one year, but it's still fun to throw in his face.

Opinions?

I'm actually of much the same belief, with one minor exception. I'd prefer having every team represented, but if it comes down to a 3rd-string 2B, and I've got a choice between the D-Rays 2B and the A's 2B, and the A's already have 4 players on there, I'd probably be in favor of taking the D-Rays guy unless a convincing argument can be given against him.

It should be the best players, true - but even one person on a crappy team is having a good season most of the time.

All-Star Game 2004: This time, it counts the home team better win, or we can't use this slogan anymore.

This argument usually comes up every year, and I agree with you, the All Star Game should be for the best players, not for scrubs on bad teams who just happen to be better than the other bums on their own squad. Just because Lance Carter is the best closer on the Devil Rays doesn't mean he's among baseball's best, you know? Does anyone really expect that Lance Carter being in the game is going to make it more interesting for Devil Rays fans? Doubt it. If on a given 25 man roster there isn't one player that's worthy of an all star spot on his own merit, well, that team doesn't get one. It's not fair to the guy playing on a stronger team that is having a good year that he not get a chance to go to the game because someone has to represent the 119-loss Detroit Tigers.

What's bad is that there were a couple of Devil Rays that were deserving of an All-Star bid, and neither one of them got it. Rocco Baldelli or Aubrey Huff should have been on that team instead of Carter. A case could have been made for D'mitri Young for the Tigers if he was there rep. But Mike Williams(Pittsburgh), Armando Benitez(Mets), and Lance Carter were all horrible choices.

Baldelli and Aubrey Huff might have had good seasons, but were they really in the top echelon of players at their position? No. Token spots usually go to pitchers because there are so many spots open. This is another reason the one player minimum rule is so stupid; the guy who goes as a result of the rule usually isn't the best player on his team, but the one who best fits according to the number of available slots on the all star team, making it even more of a token appointment than acknowledgement of achievement.

The All-Star process is bullshit. I'm a huge Mets fan and I agree that they shouldn't have been represented in the All-Star game. It devalues a player's selection if he is selected just because his respective team has to be represented. I remember as a kid being proud that Gary Carter, Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden represented the Mets in the game. It meant that they could play on a superior level and actually deserved to be there. In the case of this past All-Star game, Benitez was the representative from the Mets. I'm not proud of Armando Benitez going to represent my team. I'd much rather have the truth (that no player on the Mets was good enough to go) than the sugar-coated system that is in play now.

These are grown men, so I'm sure the system wasn't made to appease everyone. I remember Selig saying that kids would like this new system more because even if their favorite team is a loser, they still get to see one of that team's best players representing them in midsummer classic. But if that's the case, when a player is selected from a shitty team for his accomplishments on the field as opposed to because his team has to be represented, it grossly devalues the selection.

Aubrey Huff is pretty darn close to the top echelon of right fielders.

Hey, if George Steinbrenner is going to oppose revenue sharing so his team can play a bunch of games every year against teams that couldn't afford his batboys, it's a good thing that there is at least ONE negative consequence for him, however minor.

"Look Daddy, Aubrey Huff just came in as a defensive replacement for the bottom of the eighth! Go Rays go!"

Of course, this scenario is fictional because the game is on too late for kids to watch. Silly rabbit, baseball isn't for kids.

Let's put this in the plainest terms possible: Darryl Strawberry has no business instructing anybody about anything. He has never done a thing in his life to warrant a position of guidance. Not on the field. Not off the field.-- David Vescey, si.com
