With Survivor Series coming up, marking the 14th anniversary of Undertaker in the WWF, does anyone remember how for the month that followed his debut, he was known as Cain The Undertaker?

I have a WWF magazine with mentions of him, and it's very odd to see that WWF recycled Taker's original name when his "brother" came around.

Yep, I remember that. I believe it lasted for all of one Lord Alfred Hayes-hosted "from the pages of WWF Magazine, here's Update!". I don't remember 'Taker ever having a televised match under that name.

This is digging way back, but I believe he came to the ring with that moniker, because I remember reading the graphic, "Kane the Undertaker."

Don't know if he was wrestling a match, though. This was when Brother Love was his manager, so BL could have been cutting a promo.

I definitely remember the name and it must have been from his Survivor Series debut, because I saw that but never read WWF Magazine back then.

His Survivor Series debut just had him as "The Undertaker". I watched it last week.

So either they used it for dark matches (which is how I always heard the rumors) or it must have been added later and then dropped if it was used on TV at all.

I happened to pop in an old tape last month, and it had Undertaker's debut match on it. He was announced by Mike McGuirk as "Kane the Undertaker", but the graphic on-screen just said "The Undertaker". Heenan and Monsoon never called him Kane either. As the TV taping was actually before the Survivor Series where he officially debuted, I guess they just decided against the Kane monicker afterwards, and never referred to it again.

IIRC, his appearance at the 1990 Survivor Series was as 'Cain The Undertaker', but then when they re-released the videotape years later, they changed it back to 'The Undertaker'. They had taped a few appearances with him at TV tapings before that, and Jason Blackhart is right, the announcer calls him Cain The Undertaker, but his graphics doesn't say that. The full name ended right around that point.

They also talked about him a couple days later (Survivor Series was on a Wednesday or Thursday then) on the weekend shows (ie; Superstars, Challenge) as Cain the Undertaker. He didn't appear on the shows, but I clearly remember the announcers talking during a squash match about the huge, frightening "behemoth" that debuted during the Survior Series named Cain. I don't even think they said Undertaker very much in that segment. Then, I believe, the next weekend he was just The Undertaker. I know that is the only time I would have heard it 'cause I never got PPVs back then.

Ya know, I kinda like the "Cain" prefix to The Undertaker name. It's got the whole "redneck Amish" thing going for it. But then, I doubt he would've endured this long with it; somewhere along the line they'd have dropped the Undertaker part and just had him as Cain, a big scary wild-eyed guy who crushed everything in his path.

On another Undertaker-realted note, it says on wwe.com that the winner of the Undertaker's motorcycle auction stiffed the charity, what an asshole.

The bike is back up for auction though.

Cain's debut was a classic. Didnt he get to squash dusty rhodes, snuka and koko all in the same match or something? or were those his first 3 "opponents" on Saturday TV...i dont remember....

as for his bike auction - probably a "swerve" (insider term for shmoz) that will result in more Vince/Taker airtime!

His debut at Survivor Series was not as "Cain the Undertaker". Ted DiBiase introduced him as "The Undertaker", there's no edit on the tape to clip out a word. And they would have had to edit every time Monsoon or Piper said it on commentary, also.

Thing is, should the Undertaker have kept the CAIN name, and the current storylines stayed the same, would anyone take the Big Red Machine seriously if he was called ABEL?

I believe there was an article either in WWE magazine or on WWE.com saying that 'Taker took the name "Kane" as his ring name to honor his lost brother, but later dropped it.

Keep in mind, this article was after Paul Bearer showed the "burned Statue-half" on Raw, but before Kane made his TV debut.
