I just got through reading Jane Leavy's Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy.
I'm 32, and have never really seen Koufax pitch...except for highlights of old games and whatnot. I've talked to my Dad to try to get some perspective on just how great a pitcher Koufax was, but was wondering if you cats could help me out.
Any special memories of watching #32? Maybe a comparison or something to help me get a greater mental image of his work on the mound...?
When you go to baseball-reference.com they list similarity scores and his top comp is Ron Guidry. And that's who reminded me the most of Koufax. Now Koufax was bigger than Guidry but the lefty flamethrower thing was there. Koufax was listed at 6'2" and 210, Guidry at 5'11" and 168. Guidry didn't strike out as many as Koufax (not many did), but that's what I think of. Now, I was six when he retired so I just remember watching film of him in the early 1970s as my reference point.
Koufax in his prime stretch was like Pedro Martinez in his prime stretch (1996-2001). Both were so good that you felt gypped whenever the other team got a hit.
Of all the gizmos forced upon us by the modern world, is any more melancholy than the leaf blower? The device is manifestly useless. It blows leaves from one place to another, and then the wind blows them back again. -- Roger Ebert

I dunno, I see this as a win for both teams. KC badly needed to upgrade its rotation and now they've added Shields, Davis and Ervin Santana, plus re-signed Jeremy Guthrie.
