It's make or break time for my team- I started out poorly but have recently picked up speed and can really help my chances with a smart trade. Here's my stituation:

My problem is running back, where I'm very weak- Marshall Faulk, Charlie Garner, and Eddie George.

I have a strong group of Quarterbacks in Daunte Culpepper, Brad Johnson, and Trent Green.

I'm prepared to trade one of these guys for a big improvement in my running game and it just so happens that there's another team that's got strong running backs- Jamal Lewis, Clinton Portis, and Curtis Martin) and weak at QB (Kerry Collins, Matt Hasselback, and Patrick Ramsey).

I'm not interested in Martin, but I'd like to make a deal work for either Portis or Lewis. This is my first time playing fantasy football and I'm not sure of the strategic nuances of offers and counteroffers involved here. Also I'm not sure which QB I want to offer or which running back would be a wiser choice. My gut is telling me Lewis, but either one is an improvement.

So I bring my problems to the wienerboard.

After his release from prison Newton overhauled the Black Panther Party, revised its program, and changed its rhetoric. While he had been imprisoned, party membership had decreased significantly in several cities, and the FBI had started a campaign to disrupt and eventually bring down the Black Panthers. Abandoning its Marxist-Leninist ideology, Newton now concentrated on community survival programs. The Black Panthers sponsored a free breakfast program for children, sickle-cell anemia tests, free food and shoes, and a school, the Samuel Napier Intercommunal Youth Institute. However, as before, the Black Panthers were not without controversy. Funding for several of their programs were raised as the result of the co-operation of drug dealers and prostitution rings.

A lot depends on the scoring for your league, from what I can tell. For instance, in my league I get 1 pt / 10yds rushing but 1pt / 25 throwing - so a scrambling QB is better in some ways than a long bomber. In my league, Culpepper (if healthy) is a great play - but Green and Johnson aren't so bad either.

I would avoid Martin like the plague, first off.

If he will give you Portis for Green or Johnson, I would think about it. Portis hasn't played hurt this year, so maybe he's not as much of a lock as Lewis.

Then again, I've only been able to turn the first pick in my league into 5th place, so you probably shouldn't listen to me. It's also my first year playing - so wait for the old timers to chime in

What's your scoring system? Do you get points for completions? Six points for TD's or four? What are the yardage points like?

Having asked those questions, If you can sell high on BJ, do so. Green and Culpepper will probably be more consistant down the stretch, and I'd rather have Green as my full time starter if Culpepper goes down again over Johnson. That being said, I think I might deal Culpepper. He's going to be playing with three broken bones in his back. He could still easily miss more time. If you can send him Pepper for Portis and Hasselbeck, that'd be great for you, even though you really don't need three QB's. I too would stay away from Martin, and I would try dealing one of your backups (Green or Johnson) and maybe Eddie George for either Lewis or Portis, if that suits your fancy better.

I'm on a yahoo game, so I imagine the scoring is pretty standard- 6 for a TD, 1 for every 50 yards passing and every 25 yards rushing and receiving. Fumbles and interceptions are -2.

I think Green is least likely to be traded. I think he'll be more productive than Johnson and I'm worried about Culpepper's back and his fumbles.

I can't imagine anyone being interested in my running back, but I can throw in a WR. I've got Harrison (who's not going anywhere) Keyshawn Johnson, Keenan McCardell, and Johnnie Morton. I would be willing to add a receiver to the deal and pick my number 4 guy up off waivers.

Has anyone picked up Frerotte in your league? If not, grab him. That way you've got the Minnesota QB regardless of whether Culpepper goes down.

If you can get this guy to trade you either Lewis or Portis, trade him whichever guy (Johnson or Green) it takes to get the deal done. Be careful if he starts asking for a lot, though...Faulk will be back soon and Garner/George aren't bad players. Also keep in mind that as the season goes on, two things happen with RBs: guys get hurt and teams who are out of the playoff race start looking at new players to see where they might be able to free up cap room. Both situations result in backups and young players seeing more playing time, and those can often be found on the waiver wire if you're alert and grab guys quickly.

This is where I got screwed I cant trade Martin for a TE or a kicker. But if I had Ahman Green and was offered a trade for a healthy Dante Culpepper I would be hard pressed to reject it because of the running advantage of Culpepper. Are there any decent RB's in your free agent pool or is it all Houston Texans?

You would trade Ahman Green? What in the world for? Unless your QB is Rodney Peete you can't need a QB that badly. I've got Green in one of my leagues and he's big money every week. There are more QBs out there that produce than there are RBs that consistently put up what Green does.

I offered Johnson for Portis but he turned me down. I'm thinking about waiting a week and throwing in a receiver.

Portis is an injury risk and Johnson has been putting up consistantly QB stud like numbers since the end of last season. BJ is probably the most underrated upper tier QB in many leagues right now.

Either the person who declined the trade is bluffing and trying to get more from you or he has overestimated Portis' stability. Portis has been a monster when healthy, but he doesn't finish any of the games he starts.

I also think reputation may be playing a part in that trade. Tampa Bay QBs don't usually put up good fantasy numbers, despite the fact that Johnson is having a very good year so far, whereas Denver RBs and Portis in particular )last year, at least) are always at the top of the league in terms of production. I don't know if I would have taken that trade either.

I've got a good question I took a chance and grabbed Willis McGahee from my fantasy leagues free agent list.Any chance he'll play?I know he practiced recently and I gave up one of three quarterbacks for him(Tim Couch).I know Travis Henry is hobbled and Drew Bledsoe is struggling so I figured Buffalo would push McGahee harder to play sooner.Any advice?

I did the same thing. If you can afford to have a dead spot for a few weeks, I think it makes perfect sense. And now you have a trade chip to sweeten other deals you might be looking at.
