Since my hard drive died and I had to "start over", I've been looking at the legit music services out there.

I'm reasonably convinced that some of my PC's slowness issues were the result of the crapware that is most file sharing programs. Not to mention the crappy, skipping versions of songs you sometimes get.

In any case, iTunes just announced the Windows version today. Have any of the Mac using Wieners used this service? And if so, what's your take on it?

I'm interested because I see very few full albums out there that I want to buy, but I'd be willing to shell out the $10 - $15 to compile my own CD full of singles legally.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I haven't used ITunes, but I have used BuyMusic a couple of times. It's great as long as they have the song you were looking for. Sadly the last 4 times I went there, they did not have the song I wanted available, thus causing me to have to consider other alternatives. Hopefully the ITunes service for Windows will be less likely to have this problem with its larger library.

Also, the new Roxio-sponsored Napster service should be debuting within the next couple of weeks. I don't know what the selection will be like, but you might want to give it a look.

I've been streaming radio off of the Windows iTunes app for the last 3 hours.

I've got to say, the app is nice. I haven't bought anything yet, but I haven't taken the time to shop yet either. I don't really want to go wild buying songs - and I know if I put the credit card in I'm going to drop over $100.

Ugh. It's nice. Nice, like crack cocaine.

I've had the Mac version of iTunes 4 on my work computer since it was released, and I've dropped UNGODLY amounts of money into that thing. I know the first week I had it, I dropped 50 bucks in the Music Store. Browsing through the store is effortless, and the "One-Click Shopping" is like crack, especially at the impulse-buy friendly price of 99 cents. If you're an impulse shopper like myself, do yourself a favor, and make sure iTunes prompts you before you buy ANYTHING.

The other nice thing about the Music Store is that you're not terribly restricted in what you do with your files once you download them. You can keep them on up to three computers, and you can share music over a local network. Which is extremely nice when you work in an office full of Macs. Or so I've been told.

I love the streaming radio as well, although a few years ago, it had significantly more stations. There are a few stations out there that stream in the mp3 format (www.kexp.org), and you can save them in playlists as well.

Simply put, iTunes is easily the best mp3 program I've ever used. And while the PC-owning side of me is glad that it's FINALLY coming out for Windows, the soon-to-be-Mac-owning side of me wishes that it (and the iPod) had never been released for Windows, as it could have been instrumental in getting more Macs into people's hands.

AAAAARRGGGHHH!

I just went and looked, it's only for XP & 2000...

I had been trying to put off that upgrade until I get a new computer, the hard drive was just replaced on this one...do I pop the $100 for XP? On a 3 1/2 year old PC?

Crap...

Maybe after tax time next year....(for the new PC)

I encounter major instalation problems with ITunes for Win 2000, had to reboot with Last Good Profile after 2 hours of trying to get safe mode to work... I deleted and reinstalled it, still with problems but now at least it's working. Like the simpliciy of it, can become my default MP3 player easily.

Anyone else encountered any problems when installing?

Sometimes it's just not worth sifting through 15 fakes with 10 seconds of the song looped for 3.5 minutes. I'll gladly pay a little for lots of convenience.

I installed it for Win XP with no problems. There is a note during the install process reminding you to make you have all of the latest patches and stuff, but I had no problems outside of that.

I think Apple's in the process of a deal that would include independent artists in the Music Store. And I think there will be a settlement in the Apple Computer/Apple Corps lawsuit that will enable Beatles tunes to be released for it, which would be pretty cool.

I did some research on BuyMusic.com and found some unsettling things, (courtesy of www.boycottbuymusic.com):

Also, it collects your IP address, browser type, ISP, platform, and a date/time stamp on every file you download, which is unsettling to say the least.

You know, not to freak you out or anything, but Apache logs pretty much all of that information by default. I think they are just disclosing that they are storing it so that they can do data mining on it.

You can set your browser to not give out all of that info - well - at least you can in Konqueror. I would assume you can do this in Mozilla as well.

Ever since I got booted off Napster for the whole Metallica thing, I've gone out of my way to buy CDs instead. The result is a slightly slimmer wallet and the inherent good feeling inside knowing that I support the fatcats in the music industry. Well, at least I'm simply buying more Canadian CDs than anything else. That'll show those bastards.
