Today could conceivably be one of the worst days in baseball's long history. If the Cubs and Red Sox (anyone's pick for a dream World Series) both are knocked off in favour of the Florida Fucking Marlins and.....them......, that might be more than I can take. What a letdown for real baseball fans.
That being said, if the Sox can push it to seven games and the CUBS WIN~~~! then it'll be a perfect day.

I have to go with the Cubs and Red Sox here. This is the biggest game of Kerry Wood's life, and Pedro Martinez on three days rest is still the best pitcher in baseball. If John Burkett starts for the Sox, though, Yankees-Cubs could be in the works.
Sometimes I ask myself why I watch WWE after all the crap it's given me. HLA, necro, HHH, and so on. And then it hits me. That one simple phrase that can be modified and used for anything that gets you down, yet makes you keep coming back.
Every episode has the potential to be the best one ever, and I'll be damned if I'm going to miss it after sitting through this shit.
I watched them choke in '69 against the damn Mets. They had it locked up. They had Banks and Williams and Santo and Jenkins and the rest. No doubt about it. We were already in the playoffs. No, they lost.
in '84, they actually make it to the playoffs. They have Sandburg and Sutcliff and Jody, Jody Davis and they take the 1st two games of a best of 5. Three straight losses in San Diego. The bastards at Major League Baseball took home field advantage away from the Cubs over the lights in Wrigley. They lost
Same in '89 and '98.
Same this year. Kerry will maybe pitch a great game, the Cubs might be up 11 runs with 2 outs in the 9th, but somehow, they will lose. We are fated to be the laughingstock of baseball.
At least the Fricking Red Sox make it to the Series once in awhile.
24 hours ago, everything seemed to be going right. The Red Sox had just tied their series, and had Derek Lowe pitching in Fenway trying to send them up three-two. The Cubs were ready to close out the Marlins at home, with Prior on the mound. Underdog fans were three wins away from the Apocalypse.
One unfortunate and one MIND-FUCKING-NUMBING loss later, they're still three wins away, but now they're all must-wins, and it looks like NEITHER the Cubs nor the Red Sox will make the Series. (Yeah, the Cubs have Wood on the mound at home. So what? After last night's debacle, it's clear that the Baseball Gods will do _anything to keep it from happening.)
The Baseball Gods are mean, cruel cocksuckers when they want to be.

Who said its a bad thing if the Marlins go. They got a team with a lot of heart, and a great manager. (Also if the Cubs lose I can make fun of them for another year, go fish!)

Everyone but you.
(Don't get me wrong -- it was nice to see the Marlins knock off the Giants, and the play that ended that series was great to watch. Now that that's over, though, they are cordially invited to Go Away.)

So, I'm driving home last night listening to the Cubs-Marlins game on ESPN radio. As soon as "The Incident" happens, my first reaction is "Jesus Christ, who is booking this shit?!?"
I had just gotten done watching what seemed like a lifeless bunch of Red Sox float through another lost opportunity, and I get in the car and drive home, openly yelling and rooting for the Cubs, and this happens. Did Vince Russo swerve us all and take over as Commish of Baseball when I wasn't looking?

This sounds suspiciously like more whining about 'curses' and such. There is no vendetta by 'Baseball Gods' in this instance. An idiot fan interfered with the ball. Then, Alex Gonzalez committed an error. This is evidence that fans do stupid things and shortstops commit errors; I don't think either of these require a supernatural explanation.
Also, count me in the exception. If I had to pick, I'd go with the Marlins because they have Pudge and they don't have Dusty Baker.
Lastly, while we're at it, there are no curses (of any sort) in baseball. The ball going through Buckner's legs is evidence of a bad managerial decision, not a curse against the Red Sox.
I don't know...after last night, I'd be hesitant to wager on the Cubbies winning. What was that? Eight runs in the eigth inning? How the hell do you do that?
Hey Edmonton...newsflash, hotshots: YOU SUCK!

Fine. If you want a non-supernatural take on the situation, how's this:
If the Yankees face the Marlins in the World Series, I will not watch or listen to any of it. I have no rooting interest in either team and reasons to dislike both, as George Steinbrenner and Jeffrey Loria are two of the biggest horse's asses in professional sports.
Buckner comes in fourth on my blame list for 1986 -- he's preceded by Bob Stanley (threw the game-tying wild pitch, came in to get one out and couldn't do that), Cal Schiraldi (for imploding and setting up the situation) and John McNamara (for player management throughout the debacle).
The "Baseball Gods" are a convenient shorthand form for referring to all of the forces that fans have no control over -- momentum, on-the-field decisions, umpires' judgement, split-second timing, superstition, and pure dumb luck (or lack thereof). When those forces combine to radically change the outcome of a game (and possibly an entire season) for the worse, IMHO, I'm allowed a little fucking whining now and then.

... Funny you say that; I just put $225 on the Cubs for today's game -- and that's just to win $100 by the line. I know that the Cubs are the better team, and that Kerry Wood is the better pitcher. I don't believe in curses or any of that other bullshit, and I don't believe the Marlins will pull another one out of their asses. Florida's damn lucky to be where they are. Their luck has to run out sooner or later.
Everybody points to the '86 World Series and how the Red Sox were doomed to lose Game 7. This is different. Dusty Baker's a far better manager than John McNamara; hell, my dog is a better manager than John McNamara. The Red Sox were the underdogs in that World Series; the Cubs are the favorites in this series. The Red Sox were on the road; the Cubs are at home.
Sooner or later, all streaks come to an end. The Angels won it all last year after not going to the Series in 41 years. The New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup to end a 54-year drought. The Cubs already killed off a "demon" when they eliminated the Braves. They're going to kill another one today, and I'm sure that Harry Caray will go crazy upstairs.

I still think Roy Halladay's the best pitcher in baseball, but I'm also horribly biased. Look for the Jays to get to the World Series if they can find any help for their bullpen.
Any-hoo, I say the Cubbies win tonight after Wood makes us all believers...and the Sox at least stretch it to seven.
FLAMES: 2-1-0-0; 4 points CUBS: NLCS Tied 3-3; DIE FAN DIE STAMPEDERS: 5-11; Officially out of playoff contention
Well, looks like it's Burkett after all. By my count, the Yankees are 24 outs away...
And to Freeway, the Blue Jays are a little more than bullpen help away from the World Series. Maybe if they got a #2 and #3 starter to go along with said bullpen help they'd be on the right track...
This is shaping up to the World Series nobody wanted to see, i'm pulling for the Sox...
Go ahead, do it You have sexual needs (needs), desires (desires) You want to, you need to, do it for you When was the last time you did something, for you? (indulge) We all know this is a physical thing, it's not like you're going to leave your wife (physical) Look at it this way, it will make your relationship stronger in the end What she doesn't know, wont hurt her (bliss) You'll apprecriate your wife more (appreciation) You play your cards right, you might even learn a few things (A+) And believe me, your wife will thank you later (thanks) I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.
Called it, didn't I? The cubs are so cursed. You may attribute it to Dusty's seeming refusal to pull a pitcher who is losing it, you may attribute it to superstars who can't pull it back and go for just a hit or you may attribute it to a less than stellar pen, but I attribute it to the curse.
This is '84 all over again.
Oh well, at least I don't have to watch the world series now. Major league baseball and Fox has to be hating this. Cubs/Red Sox would have murdered in the ratings. Even Red Sox Marlins won't do that well.
My daughter summed it up nicely. They were doing great to get this far and it all starts back up in 4 months.
