... booing your team as they lose their freaking opening game is just not good. 81 games to go and you boo them off the ice?

This is why the Rest of Canada hates you, and laughed at you when your lights went out, and kind of wish Lake ummmm Superior? would rise up a few feet due to global warming and just flood you goofs off of the map.

"The Leafs suck and they aren't going to win anything this year!" Ya, how is that any different from the last 36 years? Ya, you are the Canadian version of the Rangers ... old and overpriced. But for heaven's sake, wait until the season is 20 games old before booing your crappy team.

(Just kidding about the flooding business ... but Leafs baiting is a very popular sport out West )

It must be sad when the Ottawa Senators, who I believe once set a record for futility, have made way more progress then the big budget Leafs.

I think it'd be Lake Ontario.

Anyway, I know that I've had to take a second mortgage out to get Leaf tix in the past, so the people who were at that game paid a lot of money to watch a piss-poor performance.

Being a pessimist is one of the fun parts of being a Leaf fan. In the unlikely event the Leafs ever did win the cup, a lot of us would just be walking around the next day all glassy-eyed, with nothing to do.

I don't think the rest of Canada hates Toronto so much as looks toward it as a loving older brother who doesn't reciprocate that love. It's a lot of pressure living in the city where the rest of the country looks up to.

That's why I moved to Calgary. :)

NOBODY pays for Leafs tickets in Toronto.

They're all corporate giveaways...

And welcome to Calgary, Goon.

This is how badly the Leafs played in their first game.....we're getting told off by FLAMES FANS and still can't muster an appropriate response.

That said, at least Toronto will still have its NHL team in ten years. Everyone else that can guarantee that take a step forward....not so fast, Calgary.

Everyone whose hockey team is guaranteed to have the NHL to play in come this time next year, step forward.

Didn't think so.

I was telling my roommate while watching the game Saturday, "Watch when the game returns from the first intermission-there'll be no one in the platinum seats." And sure enough, all the corporate bastards were in the bar or lounge or whatever it is down there...that always kills me.

And thanks! It's great here in Cowtown.

I can almost hear the blowhard Leaf fans now...calling into their radio shows and sitting around their bars complaining about how Belfour's a bum, about how Sundin is overpaid, about how the team is so old, and so on. And then, sure enough, as soon as they win a game 4-0...Belfour's the greatest goalie in the league, Sundin should be the MVP, Tucker and Roberts have so much heart, etc.

It's like clockwork.

Even more entertainment is when the Leafs qualify in the bottom half of the playoffs, and the folks at CITY-TV start planning the parade down Yonge Street before the first puck of the playoffs is dropped.

Is it true that Leafs fans honk their horns for just winning a regular season game? I can understand doing that after reaching the conference or Cup finals, but for just one game? Nutty.

Yes, we in Toronto are guilty of loving our hockey team.

Yes, there may be a few horn honks after a regular season win, but it's nothing noticable.

Yes, people do overreact after every Leafs game, win or lose. These people then proceed to call radio shows and make complete asses of themselves. Morons = ratings, apparently, because most of the Leafs fans I know are more than capable of keeping a win or a loss in perspective.

Yes, we get excited when our team makes the playoffs. Cut us some slack....the Leafs haven't won in 36 years. We take what we can.

Do I think these are bad things? Of course not. Half the sports franchises in North America would kill for the kind of devotion the Maple Leafs get from their fans.

Yes, we love our hockey team.

Sorry.

EDIT: typos.

Yeah, it's almost as pathetic as Red Sox fans rioting because they won the Division Series. That's gonna look so good on them in a couple days when the Yanks put them away.

The problem with Leafs fans is not that they are devoted, it's because most of them are just stupid. Many of them don't understand the game and their opinions on just about every person associated with that franchise changes based on what they did last. I don't mind people who are knowledgeable about the game and just happen to cheer for the Leafs; I can't stand the ones who change their mind about whether Mats Sundin is a bum three times a week and who try to argue that Tie Domi and Darcy Tucker are all-stars because they've got heart ("heart" apparently justifies being a goon when the guy is a Leaf, but that's another rant).

Take it to Baseball.

By the way, was I way off on the whole NHL lockout/death thing? Have there been developments that I wasn't aware of?

Oh man, PLEASE no comparisons to the Red Sox. I'd rather not be in a nursing when the Leafs finally win the Cup.

Besides, it's only been 36 years. St. Louis, Buffalo and Los Angeles have been around nearly that long and have never won. I'll only start worrying when Chicago (42 years) gets a Cup, and judging from their sorry roster, I won't have to worry about that for a while.

Yeah. What's happened to the Sox is the equivalent of the Blue Jackets and Lightning winning, as well as the Panthers.

Off topic again, why in the hell does Columbus have a team? What about Cleveland or Cinci?

And this is exactly why the NHL is tanking.

Booing your team on Opening Night is nothing new for Rangers fans and the home opener this week could get ugly quickly if they fall behind Atlanta early

Columbus may have more people, but Cleveland and, to a lesser extent, Cinci have a broader appeal. Columbus doesn't rock, Cleveland rocks! Maybe I'm wrong about Cinci, but I've been a lifetime closet Reds fan.

My favorite memory of Harvey was when Pat Quinn (then coach of the Canucks) had to be physically restrained from pummelling him after Harvey ran over a Canucks jersey with his mini Zamboni. Funny stuff from a funny mascot. Happy birthday Harvey!
