Maybe it's because I'm a little "too close" to the song "Pictures of You" and it has special meaning to me, but doesn't it seem strange for Hewlett Packard to use such a somber (tho AWESOME) song to advertise their digital cameras?
Am I missing the point or is HP?
However, I am glad that Robert Smith is getting some credit for writing beautiful songs. I think he's been vastly underrated as a songwriter over the years. Of course, it's maybe partly because he's lost his "fastball" since the early 90's.

I'm hoping that Devo DOESN'T know about the Swiffer ads. And when they find out, they take the ad wizards who came up with that behind the woodshed. >:(
And the HP ad? I've got sort of the same feelings for that as I do the Wrangler ads using "Fortunate Son". But it isn't THAT offensive. Robert Smith deserves props, but I'm not sure this is what I had in mind.
There has been such a werid trend to using very good but not the typical music in commercials lately, that this doesn't surprise me in the least. In the last couple of years we've seen ads with:
-Flaming Lips (multiple ones) -Red House Painers -Mogwai -The Cure -Fischerspooner -Devo -Iggy Pop
These are just what comes to mind off hand, I'm sure there are others. While I like the idea that maybe it will help them some (it seemed to be good for Moby and Sting) it still is jarring, as it was for Drew when I realized it was "Pictures of you" in the HP ad.

Of course they know. Mark Mothersbaugh sells his stuff to anybody! He wrote the damn Rugrats theme, for Pete's sake!
No insinuation whatsoever, Mr. Freeze. He wrote it. I said it. In fact, he has written music for tons of stuff that you didn't know he did.
He did the theme for Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Mann & Machine, Beakman's World, Sliders, Rocket Power!, as well as all the Rugrats movies! He's a prolific composer of the wacky music! Not just Target ads!
