We've got a predictions thread, I figure we can use this thread as a catch-all for playoff games in progress.

Well, today saw the Twins clamp down on the Yankees (and the Yankee defense suck), Schmidt iced the Marlins, the Sox and A's were off, and Chicago/Atlanta is in progress as I type this.

I watched the Twins/Yanks game with the glee of a bitter Sox fan, of course, but my serious observations are as follows: a.) The Twins were able to come out on top even though their best pitcher only threw four innings, and b.) that Yankee defense is awful. All the "experts" over at ESPN were placing all the pressure on Santana, but if the rest of the Twins team keeps showing up like this, it could spell upset for the Bombers.

While the Marlins bats were absent today, the Giants only came up with two runs. I still expect the Giants to take the series, but perhaps the Marlins offense can come back and even the score against lesser pitching.

In deference to superstition, I won't mention the game in progress.

Well it's over now, so I will...

I only got to see the Cubs/Braves game today (thanks to the dreadfully early start times in the Mountain time zone)...and I have to say the Cubs pitching might be enough to take them pretty far in this thing. I haven't seen many Cubs games this year (thanks to the glut of Blue Jays, Braves, and Mets games we get up here) and am really looking forward to seeing Prior pitch.

Wood did have unhittable stuff there for a while. Any game in the playoffs where you have as many hits and RBI at the plate as hits and runs you give up on the mound, you and your team are in good shape.

And the Braves got lucky. The Cubs could have blown it open early.

Even more, they should have. I was crazy in those early innings when Gretz struck out twice or when A-Gon and the catcher (Ain't I bad, can't think of his name) whiffed. They made up for it later. But my kids were a little scared of me.

I didn't get to watch the game but the thing that totally threw me for a loop was the Cubs fan in Atlanta.

I turned on the radio where they had a sports update and they played a clip from the game where The Cubs scored and I heard a roar from the crowd, and I sat back and thought really hard "Aren't they playing in Atlanta?" LoL. The announcers never said who's at home when they gave out the score so I while I was really confused

Just finished watching my Marlins beat the Giants in game two, 9-5. While the Giants didn't exactly play the best defense, I think the Fish were impressive, capitalizing on every mistake.

That should tell you how bad the Atlanta fans are. My girlfriend and I almost drove down there on a whim(16 hours) to go to a playoff game last year because we knew tickets would be available when we got there.

I flew back to Philly today and even in the morning the airport had tons of Cubs fans. There were a bunch in the stadium, but it was still more ATL fans.

The Red Sox will win this series because of this game. The A's will be wiped this afternoon just like the Sox were Thursday, and there is no way Pedro on full rest loses to Barry Zito on three days. No way.

Sometimes I ask myself why I watch WWE after all the crap it's given me. HLA, necro, HHH, and so on. And then it hits me. That one simple phrase that can be modified and used for anything that gets you down, yet makes you keep coming back.

Every episode has the potential to be the best one ever, and I'll be damned if I'm going to miss it after sitting through this shit.

If Burkett can avoid his usual giving up of 3-4 runs in the first couple of innings the Sox should take this game today.

"Deep down, we worry that our lives will pass us by without ever seeing the Red Sox win a World Series ... which is what this whole thing is really about in the first place. That's why Red Sox fans are so insanely passionate about our team. We're haunted by the possibility of living an entire lifetime -- 80-90 years, followed by death -- without celebrating a World Series title. That's not a curse; it's an imaginary guillotine that hangs over us every season. We're just waiting for it to go away, that's all.

That's pretty simple, isn't it? Well, it's true. I have made thousands of arguments in this column -- some of them good, some of them bad, some of them insane -- and feel more strongly about the above paragraph than anything else. Blaming Babe Ruth's ghost for 85 years of failure makes for a cute story, and as WEEI's Gerry Callahan likes to joke, the premise put Dan Shaughnessy's kids through college. But it's not true. It's a myth kept alive by writers, columnists, talk show hosts and producers of slanted documentaries for HBO. The only "curse" is that the media keeps bringing it up.

But plenty of sports fans battle similar demons, don't they? What about Cubs fans closing in on the 100-year mark? What about Bills fans losing those four straight Super Bowls, including the horror of the Norwood Game? What about Browns fans losing their team, for God's sake? Who's more tortured than Maple Leaf fans? You think Astros fans have had tons of fun over the past four decades? You think the Bengals and Cavs have been laughing it up?"

Burkett pitched the best I've seen in a while! I thought we were in for another 2nd inning like game 2's, but Burkett pulled it out with only one run scored.

Pedro will dominate tomorrow and our bats will own Zito. It's on now. Cowboy up!

Nice to see Ortiz pick the best time to get his first hit of the series.

you know, at the beginning of the postseason I was kind of bleh, but the series have been worth it so far.

Fish/Cubs should be interesting...

well, i guess the hot streak ran out for the Twinkies...but hey, doesn't this set up the Yanks for a bigger fall...still, if they make it to WS i doubt anyone has much of a chance with 4 games in THRB.

Sure looks like the A's are falling into their usual...but hey, the Sox are due no?

I dunno.....even if the Yanks make the Series, I don't care where they play the games: Wood and Prior are tough to beat anywhere. They might be the next Schilling and Johnson.

And just so I'm not totally dissing the Marlins, they have a semi-team of destiny look to them as well. Pudge Rodriguez is laying to rest any doubts about his making the HoF.

Well, of course, but you'd think that whoever was the photographer on that would point it out, or do something about it.
