After reading the "Which one of these movies is" Thread. Someone pointed out how lame T2 is compared to Terminator. Back in '91 after I watched T2, I proclaimed it "Best Sequel. Ever." Having watched it a few weeks ago, I realize it hasn't aged well. T2 was mostly explosions and gunshots compared to the frantic pace and sense of danger the original Terminator has.

So I want to do a poll on which movie you think had the best sequel. To qualify the sequel must kick more ass then the first movie. And if given a choice you would rather watch part 2 (or 3, 4 etc..) over part 1. There are the obvious choices. Godfather II, Empire Strikes Back, and so on... Also could you give me your Worst (my God, who greenlighted this shit) Sequel or remake.

My pick for best sequel has to be Back To the Future II. To me, it took everything cool about the first movie and shook it in a martini mixer and added pieces of fruit and and more alcohol.

I would have said Evil Dead 2, but as everyone knows that is more like a remake. My second choice is Aliens. I mean damn. James took everything Ridley Scott did and blew him out the water.

The Worst Sequel ever made has to be.....damn, so many prime choices to pick...I'll go with Batman and Robin. Because I was and still am mystified at how could you fuck up all that A-list talent, my boy Jerry sure found a way.

Sure Troll 2 and Leperchaun 4 in Space! Is worst. But, I never felt as violated then when I paid 7 bucks for that shit (not including that 48 hours I spent in county lock up).

Worst remake by far is Rollerball which is about 2 steps ahead (or behind) of the Psycho Remake and I like both of the directors oddly.

The 3 movies coming out this year that has the chance to make the best sequel list is Blade 2 (loved Blade), Ep. II AOTC (don't let me down again G.L.) and LOTR: The Two Towers. TTT is the only one I have complete confidence in. And of course Matrix: Reloaded in 2003. Which has to be the hardest Sequel to compete with itself since Godfather II.

So what do you think?

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've never seen Caddyshack 1. Only part 2, which I kinda liked.

Best Sequel - ESB. I was trying to think of something less obvious, but I can't. I prefer Empire because of the character development. In Star Wars, they were just kind of cardboard cut-out, one-dimensional characters. In Empire, Kirshner really let the characters grow.

Worst Sequel - Rush Hour 2. I really disliked this movie. Tucker and Chan both seem like they would rather be at home. The "jokes" are either feeble or re-hashed from the first movie. The characters behave completely illogically. A complete waste of time.

Sequels that I would rather watch than the original:
Lethal Weapon 2
Evil Dead 2 & A.O.D.

Worst sequels:
all of the later Batman movies
All of the Highlander sequels
Airplane 2

Worst remake:
Point of No Return

I think that as for coming sequels I think the remaining LOTR movies have a great chance since really the first movie is just kind of setting the table for the later struggles to come.

Oddly, you'll probably get many people who give Best Sequel Ever to "Godfather II" and give Worst Sequel Ever to "Godfather III". Talk about falling off the back of the quality train...

There really aren't that many sequels that surpass the originals. I'll give some props to Superman II and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, as I felt both surpassed the originals (not that I thought either original was THAT great, but I digress). Godfather II was great, but so was Godfather I. The Bond movies aren't really sequels, are they?

But I'll go here with my favorite sequel ever: Jackie Chan's DRUNKEN MASTER 2. (The original; the US remake jazzed it up a little but didn't really improve it, IMHO.) The original was an old-school kung-fu classic, but the sequel rocked in just about every way possible.

Worst sequels: Rocky III, IV, V in decreasing order, anyone? Jaws III and IV? Nah. HIGHLANDER 2: THE QUICKENING. Top THAT for the stench of good-concept-gone-horribly-wrong.

i've never seen caddyshack 2, so i can't nominate it.

the worst sequel i've seen recently was hannibal. the movie was boring and pointless enough, but the brain scene was the icing on the cake, so to speak.

i liked t2 when i saw it, and i still like it today. yeah, it's nothing but shootings and explosions, but i wasn't expecting anything else. i'll even be willing to see t3 since i know chyna won't be in it.

Aw, hell, I thought of a few more worthy candidates that fast.

Good Sequel: RETURN TO OZ. About as far from the original as it could possibly be, which made it a pariah in children's-film circles, but not bad at all as a deliciously dark-and-twisted fantasy flick. Maybe not the best sequel ever, but an honorable mention just the same.

Terrible Sequel: All of the Pink Panther movies following the death of Peter Sellers, but particularly TRAIL, which was a pathetic attempt to cash in on his legacy.

Terrible Sequel: SHOCK TREATMENT. All of the corn of the predecessor (Rocky Horror) with none of the charm.

And the drumroll, please:

THE Terrible Sequel: EXORCIST 2: THE HERETIC. Now, this one just might take the honors. I have yet to see anyone watch it and keep a straight face.

Return to OZ! You are the 3rd person I've met to actually like that movie. I loved it. People look at me like I'm crazy when I say I liked Return to Oz better then Neverending Story and E.T. Tick Tock was the shit. I hate it when people say they shouldn't have made a sequel to Wizard of Oz. I'm like there are more then 1 book in the Oz series you dumb fuck. Anyways, good call VSP.

The most disappointing sequel for me was Friday 2. I mean, it's not Highlander 2 (anyone who complains about continuity in the WWF should be forced to watch all Highlander sequels), it's just strictly "bad," but Friday is one of my favorite comidies of all time, so the disappointment factor was larger.

My rule for sequels are:
Take the five most important characters in the first movie.

Are these the five most important characters in the sequel, and are all being played by the original actors? If so, the sequel will be OK, but nowhere as good as the original. Example: American Pie 2, Revenge of the Nerds II, Rocky II.

Are the five most important characters back, but one or more of them are being played by another actor? If so, the sequel will fall into the "so ridiculously bad it's good" catagory. Examples: Mortal Kombat II, Major League II, Batman and Robin.

Is one or more of the five most important characters replaced by another character that is supposed to play the same exact role, but is a lot worse at it? If so, the sequel will fall into the "so ridiculously bad it's...still just bad" catagory. This is especially true for comedies. Examples: Poison Ivy II (OK, so the original was no great shakes to begin with), Kickboxer II, Friday II.

Are none of the five most important characters back, or is only one peripheral character back, or is only one main character back, but ina very different role? (and no obvious attempts at duplicating characters)? If so, the sequel can't really be judged as a sequel. It has to be treated as it's own movie with the same name as another. This usually tends to happen in the 3rd or 4th installment of a series. Examples: Meatballs IV, The Color of Money, Saved by the Bell: The New Class.

Do none of these rules apply? This generally means that the main character is back with new villians or a new supporting cast, or that everyone BUT the main character is back. This means the movie has a legitimate chance to be really good, arguably even surpassing the original (examples: Godfather II, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Empire Strikes back), and if not, probably won't suck too bad (Examples: Batman II, Beverly Hills Cop II). Highlander II is, of course, a noteworthy exception, but that movie is really just ina class by itself.

I can't remember much about Highlander 2. I think I saw it, was that the one that had a hockey game? I know part 1 had the Great Sean Conn, and I saw part 3 which I thought was Mortal kombat ok. Sorry Edge, but I didn't watch part 4 Endgame. If Highlander 2 is truly Police Academy sequel bad then I just may have to rent it (I'm into self-torture) I don't know why, but when people tell me how much a movie sucks, I just have to watch it. Like Battlefield Earth and Barb Wire. It's like a train wreck, you know you shouldn't look but you peek anyway.

I wasn't to high on the first Speed movie but let me tell you Speed II made it look like a work of art.

I didn't think Die Hard II was so bad, on par with the first but Die Hard 3...oh boy that one sucked too.

I completely forgot about the Superman movies. I agree, Superman II was way better than the first.

I didn't think H2 was that bad, but the last one (featuring WWF Superstar Edge™) was a giant pile of suck.

I think you're all forgetting Blues Brothers 2000. I mean, there were so many unanswered questions from the first one.

I'd have to say the best sequel (meaning I'd rather see the sequel than the first one any day) would be the Road Warrior. Blows the original out of the water. Empire was awesome, but Star Wars is still pretty cool too, so that's why I would choose RW.

Drew beat me to the punch with Road Warrior as the best sequel and a case could be made for Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome for worst sequel but Caddyshack 2 has that one beat by a mile - no golf fanatic would ever quote a line from that movie........worst remake ? Never saw the remake of Psycho (the recreated shot by shot disaster) but I know it closed in the theaters faster than it opened and I don't think you can even find it in my local video store

I think Predator2 really dropped the ball. I mean, the Predator took Arnie to the line, but Danny Glover just waltzed into the thing's spaceship? Sorry, but I don't buy that.

Back to the Future 2 was fantastic. I loved all those movies. I think return of the Jedi and Die Hard 2 are underrated, I love those sequels. My vote for the worst sequel has to go to Caddyshack 2. The original was an all-time great, and I couldn't even sit through the sequel. Ugh. Blues Brothers 2000 gets 2nd place.
