Has anyone had this happen? You hear a song, you love it, you buy the album figuring any artist that puts THAT out must have more music that I'll like, and it turns out the other songs sound nothing like the song that hooked you ( or the opposite-every song is a clone of the single) I bought Rob Dougan's CD (import) on ebay after hearing "Clubbed to Death" on the soundtrack to "The Matrix". I like techno instrumentals (Darude, Chemical Brothers), but this just sucked -mostly classical, slow, boring music.
The only other example I can think of right now is The Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms". "Money for Nothing" had that beat, that guitar, that something. The album just wasn't much like the song.
( I guess we should all take advantage of sites like amazon where you can listen to samples on songs before buying)

I actually thought the second single off that album was better than "You Get What You Give", which annoyed me.

Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" was one of the best radio singles of the 90s, but there was nothing worthwhile on the actual album.

This happens a whole lot. A couple years ago, I kept hearing this song on the radio called "Flood" by Jars of Clay, which I absolutely loved. I also heard that Adrian Belew produced and even played on the album, so I just ran out and bought it. Boy was that a mistake. I still love "Flood," but this album was nowhere near what I was looking for.
This is a good topic to discuss and I think it's one of the bigger reasons that some people go to illegally downloading songs and albums off the net.
Silverchair- I loved the hit Tomorrow off of the album Frogstomp (I believe that was the title). The rest of the CD didn't work for me.
POD- I enjoyed many of the singles off of the last album they had, so they have gone up in my eyes. But on their first album, the single Southtown was the only worthwhile track on the CD.
3 Door Down- Here is the opposite of POD. I loved the first album, but this latest album is pretty underwhelming except for the big single "When I'm Gone."
Stone Sour- I didn't expect to get a lot of Slipknot Jr. and I should have known better. I love Bother, but nothing on the album is like it, and that's not a good thing.
Molly, Stacy and Daffney all in WWE? I suddenly lost all my will to complain about anything regarding the WWE. Hope I don't lose my street cred for this.
TS, the greatest Wiener rated 6.1554 ever to live!! Oops, I mean 5.5...4.5?? Oh, dammit! I guess Notorious FAB was right.
Sam Roberts' album....'Brother Down' is the only really good song, the rest is pretty generic Canrock.
"When this bogus term alternative rock was being thrown at every '70s retro rehash folk group, we were challenging people to new sonic ideas. If some little snotty anarchist with an Apple Mac and an attitude thinks he invented dance music and the big rock group is coming into his territory, [that's] ridiculous." - Bono, 1997

Y'see, this is where we differ my friend. As I think that Sam Roberts' full-length album (We Were Born In A Flame) was very, very good. Catchy, yet unique enough to be damned good.
My Calgary Flames are currently tied for first place overall with a record of 0-0-0-0. It's training camp, but it's a start, right?
[quote Dagent913 I kept hearing this song on the radio called "Flood" by Jars of Clay
100% agreed.
Mine must have been getting sucked in by "Cannonball" by The Breeders, then buying "Last Splash." As cool as Cannonball is, the rest of that CD just blew in my opinion...
On New Radicals: Aside from the two singles, the only moment on that album worth hearing is Danielle Brisebois starting it off by saying "Come on! Make my nipples hard! Let's go!" Surprisingly, the singles are still better than that.
Also, I'll submit Cold's 13 Ways to Bleed On Stage. Then again, I shoulda expected as much, but the three singles ("Just Got Wicked", "No One", and "End of the World") are they only halfway decent songs. And agreed on Silverchair... but only depending on how I'm feeling. Most of the stuff there's hit or miss.
EDIT: (self-twap) How could I forget Verbena's La Musica Negra? Only good songs on there are "Way Out West" and "Killing Floor". Conveniently, the first two songs.

"...between the grime layer and the Seventies game show host hair, I'd rather rim Undertaker after a White Castle/Schlitz bender."
Back in '99, I bought Blur's 13 strictly for "Coffee & TV". The rest of the album did nothing for me.
"How did the Cards go 11-5? How did Emmie Smith rush for 1,400 yards? How did Jeff Blake become the No. 3 rated passer in the NFL? You dreamt it, that's how."
When it came out, I bought Bringing Down the Horse by The Wallflowers for the "One Headlight" song. I listened to the rest of the album and haven't touched it in over five years.
Re: New Radicals - I liked "Someday..." as much as "Get What You Give" personally, so it was a two song album for me. The Danielle Brisebois thing just threw me for a loop when I learned that one.
Re: Cold - "Bleed" is the one song for me that I have ever heard them do that I really enjoyed.
In it's own way, my current one track album is the new A Silver Mt. Zion... album "This is Our Punk Rock". The first track is just astounding, whereas the rest is just insane amounts of Efrim wailing and whining and just generally making a sonic hash of things.
I went a very long time with this not happening to me. But when I bought Tonic's CD Lemonaid Stand (or something to do with lemonaid) for If You Could Only See, I was extremely disapointed.
The good news is that this hasn't happened since, because I usually enjoy everything.
Billy Bragg - Don't Try This At Home - "Sexuality" was a nifty little ditty
Brougham - Le Cock Sportif - I actually bought this because of their song on the Can't Hardy Wait sdtrk and couldn't find anything worth listening to on this
Buffalo Tom - Big Red Letter Day - Love, love, love "Sodajerk"
Harry Connick Jr. - Blue Light, Red Light
Amy Correia - Carnival Love - "The Bike" is a fabulous song, the rest of the album isn't.
Deep Blue Something - Home
Neil Finn - Try Whistling This - and it pains me to say it
Love Spit Love - Love Spit Love
The Nixons - Foma
Heather Nova - Siren
Primitive Radio Gods - Rocket
The Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith
So - Horseshoe in the Glove
Soul Coughing - El Oso
That Dog - Retreat From the Sun
Thermadore - Monkey on Rico
US3 - Hand on the Torch
Matthew Sweet - Just Kidding (Bwah hah hah ha)and The Breeder's first album is pure crap, but their 2nd Last Splash truly rocks!!
"You have the right to suffer. You have the right to feel pain. If you wish to have an attorney present, I'll hurt him too!" - The Big Bossman
I saw a video for the single "Tragic Flaw" on MuchMusic in '95 or so. Loved it. It apparently wasn't released in the states, so my cousin picked up the disc for me in Edmonton.
I listened to the whole disc once and put it away. I really didn't like it at all. It's been on the shelf ever since except once when I pulled it out to burn "Tragic Flaw" onto a compilation disc for long night drives.
But then dwaters had to come along and start this thread, and I dug the disc up to remember what the album title was, and then I got curious and put it in...and now I'm sorta LIKING it. In fact, I'm liking it a lot.

Wow, you would think after getting burned a few times, you'd be a little more selective in your music purchases!

The CD is Lemon Parade...and I'm surprised, because that's one of my favorites.
