So as I was watching TV last night, it occurred to me that more people appear to "change sides" on Smackdown as opposed to RAW. Over the past 12 to 18 months, guys like Angle, Lesnar, Los Guerreros, Tajiri, Cena, Rhyno, etc. have been both face and heel (some multiple times) ... whereas on RAW, only guys like Flair, Test and most recently Lance Storm come to mind.

Anyone have a clue as to why Smackdown is up on RAW regarding this? Or do I have too much time to worry about it?

I think it stems from Raw having a deeper roster in terms of who they see as marketable guys. There are guys who wind up on Heat that also get a lot of Raw time (Goldust, Val Venis, even the Frenchies were on Heat a lot this summer), whereas on the other side there seems to be a definite split between Smackdown and Velocity. Smackdown seems to favour shuffling the main crew between heel and face roles rather than trying new guys when they need to fill a spot, and since they don't have as many guys on Smackdown that they have faith in (it appears), they have to do this in order to run different feuds. I don't think it's a good approach, not by a long shot. But it seems to be the mindset.

There's also the fact that the main championship on RAW has been with a heel all year, whereas the main championship on Smackdown has went back and forth.

And then with the Guererros, I don't think they really ever turned, they just became popular. Their "face" turn was a result of winning the tag titles from a heel team, so they became faces by default as a result of the feud that followed. The only thing they did to turn face was to wrestle against a heel team.

Eddie *tried* to turn heel when he attacked Tajiri, but as we all know, it didn't work. The crowd insisted on turning Eddie. So once again, Eddie became a face without really doing anything to signify a turn.

Most of the other guys on Smackdown that have turned, though, (Rhyno, Tajiri, etc) seemed to be a result of them not having anything better to do with them or else (Angle, Lesnar, etc) revolved around the world title.

Cena (and possibly Matt Hardy, though that was quite awhile ago) is the only instance I can think of where someone turned because they had a genuinely interesting character/storyline for him that necessitated it.

I'll give you Matt's, but Cena turned on Billy Kidman after a tag team match that nobody gave a fuck about, and it was a good two months before there was even a whiff of his current persona about him. So even he didn't turn heel for a particularly solid reason.

True, Cena's turn didn't matter much at the time and only led to a midcard feud of about two maybe three weeks. But given how much of an afterthought Cena was at the time, it's still nice that they were consistent enough to actually turn him in the context of the storyline. I'm sure they would have pissed off plenty of people if he had just stayed on Velocity until they were ready to use him again, and then had him turn up as a heel rapper. The cries of "inconsistency" and "wasn't he a face" would have been plentiful, and justified.

Just because something seems like a small detail at the time doesn't mean that down the road it isn't going to contribute to the overall scheme of things....it just seems that way most of the time.

Raw has had a few more turns in the last 18 months than you’ve listed:

Rosey – Joined Teddy Long’s heel stable for an hour, then turned on them, then was rescued by Hurricane and officially turned face.
HHH – He was a face roughly until Summerslam 2002, when he turned on Shawn to cement his current heel turn. And even then it took a few weeks to get the cheers to stop, since HBK was a heel with the NWO before that.
Kane – How could you forget him? He’s done the Face/Heel yo-yo more times than nearly anyone on Raw.
Al Snow – Unfortunately, he’s probably the only man on Raw to turn be a face/heel more often than Kane, resulting in no one caring because he’s cheered one week, booed the next.
Dudley Boyz – Turned heel and worked for Bischoff for a while.
Gail Kim – Debuted as a babyface, turned heel later.

The problem comes in when you’ve got people who don’t get much of a fan reaction normally (Rosey, Snow, Storm) so when they turn, no one really notices it. Or they turn, but it doesn’t change anything. Instead of jobbing for faces, Rosey and Storm are now jobbing for the heels. Why care about someone who just jobs to midcarders all the time? What’s the point of having them be a face or heel if there’s not much point in cheering for them?

You can also consider the injuries on the Smackdown side, guys on Smackdown who got injured like Angle, Edge, were actually a part of something while guys on Raw who got injured like Regal and Booker were just replaced by some other person they could easily plug in.

Also Raw seems to have more long storylines, although most of them not good. I mean think about it, the Kane storyline, Triple H being the champion, Dudleys vs. La Resistance and Test vs. Steiner have seemlingly been going on forever and Hurricane/Rosey and Lance/Goldust as well as the Molly/Gail team look like angles they are sticking too. While Smackdown seems like they're not sure where they want to go storywise.

I still like Smackdown better because it has better wrestling and well most of Raw's long storylines have sucked.

Ever since the split Kane has been a face until he lost the mask. He was the "loveable do other guys catchphrase" guy right after the split and then battled the NWO. Got injured and came back for the Hurrikanes and Vick, has been a face since with RVD until he lost the mask and snapped. Also Al Snow has been a face since the split the whole time until last week due to Tough Enough and his team up with Maven on Smackdown, and coming back to RAW to beat Test, etc.
