Spoilers ahoy if you recorded the game.

Ooooh ya, Champion's League Futbol time again ... I love September!

Real Madrid vs. Marseille

Real's team on paper looks unbelievable, I know that. But just how stacked they are doesn't sink in until you actually watch them play. Ronaldo and Raul up front, Zidane and Beckham and Figo in midfield, Roberto Carlos and Delgado on the wings ... seeing these guys in action is a thing to behold. And what's best is they are playing Brazilian Football ... "sure we gave up those three goals but we scored five, and we looked good doing it, so all is well." Attacking football rules.

Marseille looked good early in the game, getting some scoring opportunities and limiting Real's attack. But the space they gave Carlos on the left side was insane ... I knew it was gonna burn them if they didn't tighten that up.

Marseille play rope-a-dope for a while, and then counter to score the game's first goal. It was kind of a lucky goal (Becks was dispossessed 25 yards out, and the resulting shot was deflected right at their striker's feet), but good for them. And good for us the viewing public ... an early goal usually results in an entertaining game.

Then the mind-boggling power of Real's attack took over. Zidane is still the best player in football playing the mid-field general -- he had a flick pass to Ronaldo and a back-heel to Beckham on a give-and-go that just showed an unbelievable awareness of the field, and the confidence to match.

From the 30 minute mark Real just dominated possession and the game turned into a turkey shoot -- Carlos and Ronaldo scored in the first half, Ronaldo and Figo early in the second to put the game away. Marseille got a late goal but it was meaningless ... Real just dominated the last hour of the game.

Man of the match had to be Roberto Carlos. He was in on at least three of the Real goals and was a force all game on the left side. I'll say it again, I can't believe the room Marseille gave him to maneuvre. Ronaldo and Zidane also had great games, while Drogba (great name!) was the only player for Marseille to have anything to offer.

This was a fun game for the first half, before it turned into a squash. I can't wait to see Real play teams like Bayern Munich or Arsenal or Man U. I usually hate "best teams money can buy" like the Yankees or the Red Wings, but this Real team is so fun to watch I hope they go far before someone upsets them.

Fuck Real, fuck Real, fuck Real. If you're not from North Madrid, and you like that team, fuck you.

Sorry. For everyone out there that doesn't follow soccer, think about the Yankees times 10, and the kind of hatred that team would engender from all other baseball fans. If you're a New Yorker, you like the Yankees, you've always liked the Yankees, you can get away with it. But not anyone else.

For way of example, this team has the unquestioned three best players in the game right now, and arguably 6 of the top ten. While they aren't quite the 1992 U.S. men's Olympic Basketball team, they're pretty damn close.

Two other Spanish teams I really think could do something in the Champions League, Barca and Atletico (my favorite team) aren't in it this year. It sucks Barca's not in the Champions League this year, but I suppose they deserve it after acting like La Liga was games were a pick-up game in their backyard instead. Plus they got rid of my favorite player ever, Gaizka Mendieta, without ever really giving him a chance to do his thing - even if they did replace him with Ronaldinho.

My money's on Arsenal, even though I'm a Tottenham fan.

Spain does have three other teams in the Champions League, though...Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad, and my boys from Deportivo.

Moe, I personally reserve that kind of hatred for Man U!

I'm a Spurs fan too! Christ they suck this year.

Ronaldo, Zidane and Raul? Honestly, I think Beckham is mostly hype. Looking at him play today, he just wasn't a presence like one of the best players in the world should be. He's awesome at crossing the ball and taking free kicks, but he's just not a force during the run of play ... which happens to be 90% of the game.

... and arguably 6 of the top ten.

Oh, okay, he might sneak into the top ten.

I'm a Leeds fan so, before I pipe in, two quick things.

a) Completely with you Bullitt
b) Monday 15th September 2003 never happened.

Now, why Real will not win: RAUL BRAVO

If we look at the defence, they were shoddy last year, nearly letting Manyoo back in despite the awesomeness of the strikers and midfield. They got rid of there one recognised defender, Heirro, who despite his age, was doing a pretty good job. They bought in Ayala to plug that gap, but they still have no-one to play alongside. And this year, they are trying Raul Bravo.

Shit.

He spent 6 months on loan at Leeds, thanks to V*nables. We were told, "Oh, he would be starring for Spain and Real if it wasn't for Roberto Carlos". And within 45 minutes of his appearance, we were clammering for the recall of IAN HARTE!! His passing and positioning were awful. To be fair, I couldn't judge his tackling, because I do not believe he attempted a tackle in all his games. Frankly, if he is one of the best defenders Real have at the minute, they have issues.

The teams I want to do well are Ajax and Barcelona, which just harks back to my days of watching European football in the 80's/early 90's (for those who do not know, English clubs were banned from European competition after the Heysel disaster and watching European clubs was like wtaching Gods compared to the long ball game of the English clubs). And I would discount Arsenal on the same grounds as Real, except replace Raul Bravo with Toure.

I think Madrid are considerably more beatable this season.

The awe factor still exists to an extent but Juve really did show them up last year in the semi's and their failure to strenghthen their rearguard this year with the loss of Hierro will hurt them.

I don't rate their chances of winning the Champions League at all this season, though they will be a joy to watch.

Wait a minute... I thought that was Manchester United.

It's also Man U, although they're not really a "buy all the available superstars" team like the Yanks or Real. Their obnoxiousness comes from the early 90's-esque Cowboys thing of marketing themselves to the point of naseau as "the team everyone likes."

Looks like I was off with the Arsenal prediction.

I don't really know who to root for in the Champs league this year. My two British teams, Tottenham (what the fuck is up with Robbie Keane this year?) and Middlesboro aren't in it, and my two Liga teams, Atletico and Valencia, aren't in it either. I don't really follow Serie A, and I don't really know anything about any of the clubs from the second-rate leagues (other than I hate Bayern Munich for beating Valencia in 2001 and making Gaizka Mendieta go to Italy where he completely fucked his career).

I can't even root for my fellow Yids Macabee Tel Aviv, because I don't like Tel Aviv (Haifa's by far the best Israeli town). Any suggestions for a cool team to root for with a realistic chance of winning?

Wow, that makes three Spurs fans on this board (including me). Who would have thought so much misery could be shared by so many?

BTW Moe, Robbie Keane was injured playing for Ireland in a European Cup qualifier. He should be back in a few weeeks. Luckily Freddie Kanoute is scoring to take up the slack.

With respect to Real, I agree that they've gone the same "buy the Championship" route that Chelski has attempted (and which Blackburn Rovers used successfully about 10 years ago), and as much as I want them to be upset in the late rounds just as they were last year, they sure are fun to watch. Their defending, especially at centre back, is their weak point, as A-Mol correctly pointed out. I am really surprised that after dumping Hierro (their captain) they didn't go out and buy a top flight stopper. Their defensive weakness down the middle is only emphasized by their defensive weakness at left back. While Roberto Carlos is an amazing wing back, he doesn't bring too much to the table defensively.

Man, I remember reading about a team exactly like this two years ago ... who was it ... oh yeah Brazil going into the later rounds of the World Cup. Who won that thing anyways

I agree with everyone who says that Real is beatable because of their defensive weakness, but being beatable doesn't mean they will get beat, remember.

September 30 and October 1 is the next bunch of games. I can't wait.

Well, I also am a Spurs fan, and at least Hoddle's gone now. If we can get Martin O'Neill in and sort out our current injury woes, I think we've got a chance of doing some damage this year.

As for Real, I honestly believe they are the greatest team in the world right now, although they do have a somewhat ropey defence. They had a fairly good game against Malaga on Sunday night, but as soon as the new players gel with the others, it's going to take a hell of a team to stop them.

I'd lean more towards Ronaldo, Raul, and Figo as the top 3, myself.

Jeez, how have you coped in previous years? It's going to be a long time before either happens.

Well, Boro's pretty much always been a b-list kind of team (and they're only really one of my team's because that's where Mendieta is), but the Spurs always have a chance to break out. A healthy Robbie Keane's not nothing, you know.

As a Leeds fan , I have seen a lot of Keane. The problem is, he needs someone to play along side him who is likely to reign in his selfish streak. He often has the tendency to try and beat four players and smash the ball home from a tight angle when a simple through ball would have been the simpler option. Keane/Teddy worked in that vein, but Kanoute (similar problem to Keane), Postiga and Zamora and less likely to help. Plus, with the best midfielder (Davies) and defender (Carr) looking disinterested and possibly thinking of moving, there could still be a lot of problems.

Will Forte continues to impress me. I can't wait for him and Fred Armison to start getting more skits, and of course anytime Horatio is on, I'm happy. I'm still waiting for The Falconer to return, however.
