Did anyone catch the PBS special last night on 9/11? As far as I can recall, it was the first time I ever saw the video of people jumping from the towers after they were hit. The sheer horror and fright of the moment was almost too much to take. It wasn't so much seeing people falling to the deaths (it's almost like whatever "person" once existed wasn't really there anymore, like a shell). It was the hearing the reactions of people watching it. Really scary stuff.

Has anyone else been moved watching this again? I never seem to be used to it.

CNN started showing some footage on Sunday and I told myself to avoid watching anything but sports this week.

There was video being shown a few years ago of people making the jump from the 100 plus floor, but that was mainly in the initial hours during/after the occurrance.

I work in Lower Manhattan and I take the ferry past the site twice a day - I'll never get used to it and I won't watch a single minute of any of these retrospectives.

I'm weird about 9/11. Last year I forced myself to sit and watch a bunch of documentaries about it on IFC or Sundance. I wanted to relive it. See it for what it was again instead of all the other shit they've thrown on top of it.

I hope HHH gets you fired.

I might do what I did last year....read, watch movies, go for a walk, or anything but watch TV.

I too work in Lower Manhattan, and I too won't watch any of retrospectives or documentaries or whatnot. It's kind of hard to get away from though.

I am a little surprised it took this long (though I know there were places to see this if you wanted to before). I quite frankly don't want to see this, and think it is in very bad taste to show it at all. And though the "person" may be a shell to you or me, I'm sure it's still a very real person to the families. It would seem very disrespectful to them to show this, and for what? Does it really add anything to the education process to show this? Or is it for cheap thrills and ratings? I'm sure glad to know that part of my tax money is going to "quality programming" on PBS.

Saw it, and you bet I was moved. The most dastardly attack on the USA since Pearl Harbor...you don't forget something like that. It's been awhile since I've seen video of the jumpers...and coming from a news perspective, I'm not opposed to the once-a-year use of this, especially on a somber PBS special. They seem to always treat a subject like 9/11 much more seriously and less news-glitzy than the Big 3 (ok, 3 1/2 if you count Fox) networks.

It's horrible for those who lost somebody at The Pentagon, in that Pennsylvania field, or at the WTC...but those folks probably aren't watching anyway. God knows if we didn't show news events, especially historic and world-changing ones, just because they shocked, horrified or saddened us, we'd be a hugely uninformed people as a whole.

I'll be up to my neck in 9/11 coverage at work tomorrow...but that damn day has been on my mind EVERY day since it happened.

God Bless America, and f*ck you bin Laden. You'll get yours...

Of course it's hard to watch the footage. That is the point. So when anybody says we shouldn't fight the war on terror and we should learn to understand these people, remember this footage and tell them to go fuck themselves because they are so blinded as to the fact that 3,000 people died in less than 2 hours.

You know, I taped the 9/11 documentary last year by the guy shooting the probationary firefighter, but I've never watched it. Maybe some other time I'll watch it, but even now it still seems too fresh in my mind to want to sit through it again.

Washington Huskies, 1-1. USC didn't look THAT great after the first quarter, so I'm more optimistic that they'll be the 2003 Pac-10 champs.

I suggest you watch it. It's a very moving piece, hard to get through a times, but it's a poingant view of the day.

9/11/03 thoughts from David Rees, creator of Get Your War On. (I'd just post the cartoon, but it's in the new Rolling Stone and those aren't archived on his site.) It sums up my feelings better than anything else I've read.

"I can't believe it's already been two years. I'm so exhausted - I feel like I started running a marathon on September 12th, 2001, and I haven't stopped since.

And I'm fucking sick of it.

I'm sick of feeling like I gotta read the newspaper every day.

I'm sick of having to open my atlas every goddamn time there's a new terror threat.

I'm sick of President Bush acting like half our allies in the war on terrorism aren't total fucking creeps.

I'm sick of Donald Rumsfeld's gray skin and naked contempt.

I'm sick of feeling queasy every time I go to the gas station.

I'm sick of trying to remain optimistic.

I'm sick of hearing about refugees and kids with no fucking arms.

I'm sick of left-wingers and right-wingers slinging shit and trying to out-patriot each other.

I'm sick of Lower Manhattan's skyline looking like... Decatur, or some fucking two-bit wannabe metropolis.

And I'm sick of all the tattered, fading flags - buy a new fucking flag if you're such a patriot, for fuck's sake!

I'm sick of my friends being unemployed.

I'm sick of my kids asking me when the world will be better.

I'm sick of not trusting anybody with a microphone.

I'm truly sick of dumb motherfuckers who think Saddam Hussein had something to do with it.

I'm sick of think tanks. Fucking stupid think tanks - would you stop thinking and fix something, for fuck's sake?

I'm sick of people who argue with me.

I'm sick of worrying if I've been wrong all along.

I'm sick of people writing speechs for children and then giving them to adults.

I'm sick of Joe Lieberman. Please, please shut up, Joe Lieberman.

I'm sick of sirens.

I'm sick of the smell of alcohol.

I'm sick of crying when I hear Rhapsody In Blue.

I'm sick of sometimes feeling empty.

You know what I'm sick of? I'm sick of my cousin being dead."

Grimis, most people get upset that GWB uses 9/11 as an excuse to finish daddy's vendetta and not go after the true terrorists.

As much as I hate to say it, 9-11 wasn't really a wake-up call. They knew about terrorism. They knew about Osama Bin Laden and Hussein and a dozen or so Middle Eastern countries fighting each other and fighting us and getting filled with hate because we don't have to fight. Did they do anything to combat the hate? No. And where did that get them? Well...we saw what it got 'em 2 years ago.

And you can "liberate" countries left and right, you can take away dictators and bring the word of Christ to every forlorn part of the globe...and the hate will still be there because you did nothing to stop it. In the end, two years after the fact...where has the War on Terror gotten the western world? A few dozen minor terror lieutenants captured, 3000+ people dead, and hundreds of millions of people hating us. I betcha if we had tried to do something sooner, most of this wouldn't have happened.

But the thing I really hate is never being able to think of my birthday ever again without unintentionally picturing the second plane hitting. That'll hit me just as hard until the day I die.

Well Freeway420, sorry your birthday is ruined. Sorry that the USA is hated in teh middle east because we think that Isreal and the Jewish people deserve to live a peacefull life and not get wiped off the face of the earth. Sorry that since the end of the Cold War, we are the only super power and we finally have a President, who wether you love him or not, has the conviction to do what is right, on a global scale, without consulting Dick Morris or his wife at every turn.

I dont agree with everything that GWB does, but he is doing what the world should have done years ago, and that is go out and end the regimes of people who kill thier own countrymen for no other reason than they disagree with them.

Hey, I agree with the war...in theory. I just hate the fact that 3000 people had to die to make everybody clear on what needs to be done. BUT, the people who hate America will hate them more if they go around and do what has to be done. And that hate will probably create more terrorism. It's a vicious cycle. But at least America IS trying to do something, as opposed to Canada's prime minister, who during the Mad Cow, West Nile & blackout crisises this year...was on vacation and didn't do a goddamned thing. At all.

I am SO not voting for that ass.

From the informative Ann Coulter article Grimis linked to us: "On the basis of their recent pronouncements, the position of the Democratic Party seems to be that Saddam Hussein did not hit us on 9-11, but Halliburton did."

No, Ann, you stupid cunt - the position of the Democratic Party, and anyone who actually follows the news and isn't some hideous, propaganda-spewing piece of shit is that we were attacked by OSAMA FUCKING BIN LADEN - you know, the guy that Bush doesn't talk about anymore (unless he's trying to connect him to Iraq), and has described as "not that important anymore".

She makes a point though; the fact of the matter is that the candidates at the debate on Tuesday had more of a hard-on attacking the Bush administration on Halliburton than on terrorism or bin Laden. That seems to be, in the mind of the Democrats, more important than terrorism.
