Just so's I can beat Baldwin to it:

Comics Newsarama (comicon.com/newsarama) is running a story that none other than WWF Superstar Raven will be co-writing issue #14 of Tangled Web (One of a few monthly Spider-Man comic books) with Brian Azzarello.

The story is about Crusher Hogan who Peter Parker wrestled against for money not long after gaining his powers.

Not sure if they will keep that name for the character, but Randy "Macho Man" Savage will be playing the wrestler in the movie due in May.

No need to worry, Drew. CRZ has made it clear my posting of hyperlinks is unwelcome here, so I won't be doing THAT any more.

Savage's character's name is Buzzsaw (or Bonesaw, it's changed so many times) McGraw.

The ring announcer is played by Bruce Campbell, the greatest actor in the history of the universe.

I think this Raven writing thing is an utter joke. Just a way for Marvel Comics to get more exposure from another fringe audience and free hype on WWF T.V.

I imagine his real contribution will be minor, judging by the quality of the REAL writer they've paired him with, who is just amazing. In other words, they've attached his name to get WWF/ECW fans to pick up the book for that reason alone.

I'll be passing on this, thank you. Much like I do with 99% of what Marvel puts out now, anyway.

And I KNOW someone is gonna chime in with "Raven can write a comic because he's smart!"

Well, FWIW, Azzarello is a wrestling fan (having supplied he and Jill Thompson with lucha and puroresu tapes). I don't know if that will help or hurt the book.

I dunno much about comics (hmm, how could I troll Albert over here), but from someone who knows little, it doesn't seem to be a horrible idea for a guy who seems to be very intersted and knowledgable about comics to be (helping) writing them.

I sure would appericate that if the same thing was held true for some comic book guy who wanted to write about wrestling for the WWF (because that'd make one person there, haha.)

Anyway, even if it sucks, it'll get Raven out of the house and you can chuckle as he uses the same five spots in every book.

I'm a professional writer and have been for quite some time. I have credentials. Does that make me qualified to write for WWF TV?

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just trying to be really clear with my point.

Not to impune Raven's writing ability, but preach on Brutha Baldwin!!!

(and I wasn't talking about the link thing, just that you are pretty tuned into the comics thing)

I don't know if I'll pick up the issue or not. I'm pretty disgusted over Strazynski's(sp?) direction in Amazing Spider-Man right now. I really like Jenkin's work on Spectacular, but really dislike Buckingham's art. Not a huge fan of Bendis, but his work on Ultimate is pretty good, and you can NEVER go wrong with Bagley on art.

Tough to be a Spidey fan right now. Hopefully the movie doesn't drag things down any further . . .

Hey, don't sweat it. I know you weren't talking about the link thing.

Besides, I stopped "going" to those Marvel Teleconferences over the summer. Talk about a waste of time...

Blah blah blah Marvel's great blah blah blah blah DC Sucks blah blah blah blah Crossgen's a sweat shop blah blah blah blah Image is over blah blah blah We're so desperate for sales we're hiring all of DC's, Crossgen's and Image's talent away blah blah blah blah who's the bad cop again? blah blah blah.

Honestly, I've cut my M*rv*l buying WAAAAAY back during the Quemass regime. If they didn't get Johns to do Avengers, I'd be dropping it after Busiek left. The X-Books are unreadable (by a long-time X fan that is), and Spidey isn't Spidey anymore. If he doesn't feel remorse anymore for his Uncle Ben's murder and Aunt May knows his secret, where's his edge? Is he too caught up in things to give up now?? Yeesh!

I am interested in seeing if Waid can do something on Fantastic Four tho. His best work in the last 5 years has been Empire, and that was only two issues. After Morrison's horrendus run on Flash, Waid's return wasn't much better. His JLA was extremely uneven, and I don't read Crossgen books. He is definitely a falling star that needs to re-establish himself as a force in the industry. FF might just be the place to do it. I just hope his apparent dislike of John Byrne (at least I've always gotten the impression they don't like each other) doesn't lead to un-doing or "fixing" stories from that long-gone era. He needs to do his own stuff.

Whew! That was a ramblin' mess wasn't it?

That is a very accurate impression of what goes on there, Drew. Nice job. :)

The same for me on both counts. I currently read like five Marvel books.

Speaking as someone who knows Mark Waid a little bit, I can safely say his uneven work on JLA can be attributed to one thing: the art team he was paired with. You can CLEARLY feel the joy return to his work once Mike Miller took over on pencils midway through the run. I'll leave it at that. His CrossGen work, depending on the title is FANTASTIC. SIGIL is great space opera stuff (and hasn't slouched since Dixon took over) and RUSE is probably the single best book CrossGen publishes. Do yourself a favor and pick it up. CRUX is also really good and entertaining. I also really really like NEGATION, which is a book he co-wrote for three issues. Again, this one is well worth your time, because it really doesn't require any prior CrossGen knowledge.

I used to love Waid's work (and I say this as an acquaintance of his and a man who has a Proty sketch done by Mark), but nothing has moved me of late. Ruse was okay, but I thought was a little too cute for its own good (especially with the metatextual names).

Personally, I don't think he and Brian should have come back to Flash, especially after the great runs of Morrison and my man Mark Millar. That whole Flash/Professor Zoom intermindling family tree thing just was too soap opear-y for me. The same with coming back to Cap after the Heroes Reborn fiasco.

And JLA suffered for the same reason - having to follow Morrison. Apart from the great Ra's Al Ghul storyline, I wasn't very impressed, given how great he work used to be.

I still want to see more of Empire, if that ever happens.

Oh man, Mark, I gotta disagree here. The only redeeming issue from that Morrison/Millar run was the Jay Garrick story. The Suit? Come ON! The "Black Flash?" Whatever. And I won't even bring up "The Human Race." Wait. I just did. Sorry.
I'm a fan of Morrison's work. I enjoy most of it. But that Flash run was embarrassing.

I think the "Dark Flash" story arc they closed their run with was fantastic, and the ending a true stroke of genius with a nice nod to the Silver Age.

Waid lost a lot of faith in comics as a whole when he went through that whole "You can't write Superman" phase. His joining Crossgen is a direct result of that. Now, he has a renewed interest in things because the rules have changed at Marvel altogether and that's going to allow him a lot of freedom to do what he wants. Because face it, if you're a "name" creator, the new Marvel will let you do whatever the hell you want.

What was different with the Ra's Al Ghul arc from the rest of the run? The artist. Hitch REALLY dragged him down. And I don't mean the quality of Hitch's art.

I like Mark Waid. I met him at Mid-Ohio during the launch of the Gorilla line (*sniff*) and he seemed like me, only he's doing comics, and I'm not. And I have more hair and better vision (eyes, that is).

Honestly, I think he will do a good job on FF, not that I haven't liked what Carols has done. I just wish he wasn't doing it under the Quemass regime.

Somebody on the Byrne board mentioned that BillJoe are currently fighting off a takeover by another potential management team behind the scenes? Anyone else have any info on that?? Is it Kevin Sullivan or Vince Russo???

;-)

I thought the Waid JLA issues were a lot of "been there, done that" stuff, which I think is symptomatic of a larger problems (Silver Age fanboys who are now pros rehashing without being new, but that's a topic for another day). If I never see a White Martian again, it will be too soon. The same with the old "secret/public identity" stuff.

Regarding the Morrison/Millar Flash: It's been a while since I read them, but I remember them being wonderfully fresh and original. (Another disclaimer: I've liked Morrison and Millar since I read their stuff in Trident books, which was a long time ago, it seems. And I was fairly tight with Millar for a while.) And, to echo what I said before, the Scots have done a wonderful job of reinterpreting Silver Age stuff, like Animal Man (the most underrated book of the 1980s) and Millar's Swamp Thing (especially the multiverse storyline).

I think in general, a lot of the "Silver Age revisionists" have hit a lull in their writing, most notably Waid and Busiek. I'd say Kesel really hasn't, maybe because he doesn't write as much as he used to do.

Well, it doesn't make you qualified to be the permanent head writer for RAW, but I don't think it'd be too out of line for you to have a shot co-writing an episode of Heat. I mean, they didn't announce Raven was going to have a three year-run writing the X-men. I'm sure a lot of people with less experience get chances along those lines.

I'm amazed at the number of people who are given shots to write second or tertiary-level books at the big two who I've never heard of, and I'm fairly well in-tune.

It seems lots of screenwriters have worked their way into writing comics, like Goyer, Johns and some more I can't think of immediately. Ditto for prose writers like Rucka.

The most agregious appointment, if you want to call it that, is the guy who did dopey Wizard videos and is writing a Spidey one-shot involving Frog Man.

To a certain extent, I agree. Busiek's Kang storyline that he's apparently ending his Avengers run with, started out great, but has quickly fizzled. However, I have really enjoyed the Power Company one-shots, and the first issue of the regular comic was very good. Of course, the Tom Grummet art didn't hurt.

The only Power Company thing I've read so far is the Manhunter one-shot (as I'm a mark for Paul Kirk) and wasn't that jazzed.

I should get the chance to read all of it over the weekend, when I'm back home and hanging at the comic shop.
