"Bodybuilders' cocks are the same size as everyone else's."

Check that out.

Well that's food for thought.

"When this bogus term alternative rock was being thrown at every '70s retro rehash folk group, we were challenging people to new sonic ideas. If some little snotty anarchist with an Apple Mac and an attitude thinks he invented dance music and the big rock group is coming into his territory, [that's] ridiculous." - Bono, 1997

I thought the whole thing was pretty outrageous. I mean, forget Gennifer Flowers. Arnold was into smoking hash and group sex. Can't be good for one's political career.

Hooo boy I can barely fathom the level of disgust and anger that would be heaped by the right-wing upon a Democrat who ran with Arnie's past. Bill O'Reilly would actually spontaneously combust live on tv in disgust. And Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson would begin to pray for CA to call off into the ocean.

Maybe that would be true if Arnold was a life-long politician. But he *was* a bodybuilder (I can't imagine most bodybuilders live "uneventful" lives) and unlike Ronald Reagan, he wasn't a all-American white bread actor. He did shoot-em-up movies.

He's the lesser of two evils, as far as I'm concerned. I have yet to be convinced not to cast my vote in that direction.

Absent an example, you have no argument. Besides, even with Clinton the Republicans didn't go back *26* years. (I believe it was only 21? ;-) )

EDIT: Upon further reflection, I believe they DID try to make hay out of the Oxford/Commie/draft dodging/whatever with Clinton. However, it didn't really take, which I think lends credibility to my theory that it wouldn't wash in this case either should the Dems try it. If the Dems are smart, they won't bring it up and get some high ground on the GOP. Besides, he's already had his grandfather's Nazi past come out and if THAT wouldn't take, you really think THIS will? (Pretty shrewd of Schwarzenegger, by the way - I think he played that exactly right by bringing it up himself and asking Jewish organisations to help him do the research)

I remember George Bush making a LOT of reference to Clinton's time at Oxford/demonstrating during the campaign of 1992 as you mentioned. And talk radio seemed to never get enough of mentioning that he smoked pot once *gasp*. And didn't the Whitewater stuff all take place in the late 1970's and we all know how the GOP and their talk radio minions latched onto THAT one?

Even more recent things though surprise me with how easily they are being overlooked. Didn't Arnie get accused of extramarital affairs or sexual harassment just recently? And while apparently singing/rapping about violence gets you on the bad side of Fox News Channel (just ask Ludacris), making some of the most violent movies in years apparently gets a free pass.

As for the effectiveness of this sort of thing, I agree that it's not AS effective as it once was considered, however I am not sure anyone will be exactly crediting the Dems with any sort of moral high ground on this issue. Right now though they have the advantage that with Arnie being such a celebrity, the media will do this story ad nausaeum without them having to say a word to goose it along.

However, I find it hard to believe that if someone came across a video of Howard Dean smoking pot and discussing orgies back in the 1970's that we wouldn't hear a cavalcade of folks from the right demanding he drop out of the race for president. Am I wrong on this one?

Every year the bar is raised on the outrageousness that the American public will stand for when it comes to politicians and their respective backgrounds - pretty soon nothing will surprise anyone anymore...... but then it would be all about the issues and what would the media do with an election like that ?

In the 60's we had Kennedy who snorted coke, had orgies, dabbled with drugs and drank, and he did fine getting into office. In fact, he is one of those Democrats that tons of Republicans love.

JFK's foibles weren't terribly well known as the time of his election, however.
