Why not have Triple HHH drop the belt to Goldust on a surprise Raw match? Let him take it out of the blue and have Bill Goldberg keep Evolution at bay to add heat to their feud. Goldust is over with the fans, and we know he can make all kinds of angles work. Hell, Lance Storm can even get a win over Christian for the IC title after using Goldust's patented "kick to the nuts" or something.

It would liven up the situation for a few weeks (until the unevitable happens and Hunter takes the belt back), I think. And I can't recall any recent sqaushing of Goldust by HHH.

Could you imagine the crowd pop for that? I'm an advocate of the surprise title switch, even for a week or so. Remember a few years back, when Trips fough Al Snow and TAKA in back-to-back RAW's for the title? The crowd was SO behind the faces even though they pretty much had no chance. I thought it would've been cool for a "fluke" title win or so. Trips or someone else could win it back the next week.

I'm all for a surprise title switch, but rather than have it go to a chump champion (which Al Snow or Taka or even Goldust would be), have it go to a midcard guy that they want to push in the main event. They did that with Bret Hart in '92 and it worked perfectly. The key is that the title has to stay on the guy for a while and be a legitimate reign. If Goldust (or anyone) wins the title only to lose it back the next week, it really isn't a big deal. What Raw needs is big things to happen that matter long term. As WCW showed, hot-potato'ing your titles around every week only brings you down.

Well, Goldust did state on WWE.com a few weeks ago that he was positive he would be the world champ before long... I could see the match going down and Lance Storm nailing HHH with the sledgehammer in an attempt to prove he's not boring.

I myself went ballistic when Jericho beat Triple H for the title a few years ago. And I promptly shot my TV when Hunter made the ref reverse the decision. Well, not really, but oh, if I had a gun and a quality back-up TV just sitting on the bench ...

That was a great TV moment, and it did a lot to boost Jericho to the audience as a legit threat to the belt. It wasn't taken advantage of, of course, but it was a quick, hot angle. Could easily be done today for any midcarder.

Heh...WWE.com articles can be funny sometimes. The same day that Goldust one went up they ran one about how Rico wasn't going to get down on himself for a loss to Val Venis. It may even still be there.

When's the last time they did a surprise switch like that?

For the world title? I'd say it had to be Bret Hart in '92. Either that or Vince's win in '99, although that was really just Russo setting himself up with a justification for his WCW future.

All I can say to this is that tickets for RAW go on sale soon here. I will not be giving my money for the HHH show, despite having been a long-time customer of Vince's company. However, if they ever pulled something like that, and put the belt on Goldust for even a week, I'd take my chances and drop my cash :)

I like it because it'd give the impression of spontaneity, that anything could happen. I like Goldust, but would just as easily mark out if some other random mid-carder won the belt.

I think this would be an awesome idea, but you get the most out of it if you do it with a midcarder that you actually want to push to the world title level. The Jericho 2000 example keeps coming up because it would have made him a main eventer overnight, and it would have been an effort put into the right guy. Using such a push on Goldust, who is never going to fly as a world champion, would be a waste of an idea and a waste of time. Now, if say Booker T. showed up back from injury one night suddenly won the title, then you'd have something going.

Well the reason Taka, Al and so on were exciting is because even though we knew they weren't going to win there was that small itty bitty chance. But now even Jericho, Nash, HBK, Booker, RVD, Kane have no chance in hell. So therefore when Triple H wresltes someone like Maven (which he did) there is no interest because there is no way they will win.

It might not have been earth shattering surprising but I thought Kurt's first title reign was unexpected and each successful defense was surprising too.

As for Goldust? Eh, he's entertaining I guess, but he's boring in the ring, and I might be in the minority here, but I think the stuttering thing is just dumb. Plus he hasn't won a match in forever, I don't know if I want THAT big of an upset because they aren't going to be a credible champ. I think it'd work better with someone who (like Kurt) is probably going to be champion one day but it just surprises us that it came so early. The best examples that come to mind would be Edge (but obviously that can't happen), Cena, or Mysterio.

If they did go with a midcard guy though I'd totally markout for the Hurricane winning it. And then giving the thumbs up and the goofy smile as Raw goes off the air.

If they were to do a hotshot on the title, I think it would be best to give it to Goldust or someone else who's been around the midcard for a long time. It would give credibility to several of the other midcarders because the crowd would see that just because they'd never made it to the main event before didn't mean they never would. But if you give it to a rookie like Randy Orton, it just looks like he was world champion material all along and just needed his shot. The immediate impact of Booker T winning the title might be better than a Goldust win, but Booker T had a world title shot at Wrestlemania, so it's not going to have the same effect as someone who's never really had a main event run. Goldust also has the storyline built in. The WWE seems to have ignored it, but they could always bring up the fact that Evolution are the cause of Goldust's current stuttering affliction. Plus the world championship runs in Goldust's family. Have him come out with Dusty to counteract Ric Flair and you have all the makings of a highly emotional world title switch.

they teases that once in wcw with mystero, it was in flair's last tittle run, flair made a lottery picking the scrubs of the scrubs of the wcw roster, well el dandy won the lotto pick, but he had a injured arm, so he wound up giving his ticket to rey, when flair found out he flipped lol, it was a cool match cause flair got no offense and sold reys moves like gold, it ended with a countout, but it was cool cause the ring was in the middle of a pool or something, and mystero hit him with a basball slide and knocked flair in the pool to end the match,

I suppose Booker was a bad example, but I couldn't think of another appropriate face on the Raw side. But I agree with the Smackdown examples, for someone like Edge or Cena to just up and win the title one night would be awesome. You just have to be careful to balance surprise value with not devaluing the title.

I haven't seen the spoilers yet, so...

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
This is only a spoiler if it runs out that Guerrero wins the belt. Why not give Eddie a shot in El Paso? He's mad over, would get wicked face heat, and can run a program with Benoit or something for the belt while Brock and Kurt fight elsewhere. It'd be a nice change of pace.

EDIT: What the heck was I thinking? Giving someone a push in their hometown. No, much better to have Cena kick his ass. At least the squash-in-hometown thing isn't exclusive to Raw.

(edited by gugs on 27.8.03 0555)

Sometimes I ask myself why I watch WWE after all the crap it's given me. HLA, necro, HHH, and so on. And then it hits me. That one simple phrase that can be modified and used for anything that gets you down, yet makes you keep coming back.

Every episode has the potential to be the best one ever, and I'll be damned if I'm going to miss it after sitting through this shit.

Just because he was so cool to work with during that autograph session here in Titletown a few months back...I'd mark out nice n'hard for a Goldust title win.
