Baseball Prospectus is saying so.

Mike Schmidt - what an ass.

He refuses to vote for a solidly deserving person for the HoF like Ron Santo, yet he'll go to bat for that lowlife Rose. What a wonderful man.

The ghost of a steam train - echoes down my track
It's at the moment bound for nowhere -
just going round and round
Playground kids and creaking swings -
lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will -
but I'd sooner put some joy back
In this town called malice

Per ESPN.com Click Here (sports.espn.go.com)

MLB is denying the story. In fact they called it "totally unfounded, totally unsubstantiated" and "journalistically irresponsible."

Bob DuPuy is yelling so loud about this, that it must be true. I have had somewhat of an email correspondence with Will Carroll, the writer of this particular piece, for the last couple of years, since he had a little email newsletter. I have never known him to have sources that were wrong. I am betting this is true. Pun intended.

What team would be so desperate that they would hire Pete Rose to manage them?

The Reds.

The owner, Carl Lindner, has openly lobbied to let Pete back in the game so he could manage the team.

What commish is so incompetent, with such an appalling disregard for the rules/regulations/bylaws of his own sport that he would reinstate Rose?

Well, when you are the commisioner, YOU MAKE THE RULES. The man SHOULD be in the HOF, regardless of whether he bet on baseball. He should be there on the merits of his actions ON THE FIELD. You can put him in the Hall without allowing him to coach/manage again. THATS what should happen.

Well, until Bud changes things, the bylaws very clearly state that anyone found to have gambled on baseball is permanently ineligible. Therefore, Rose is and will be banned until this bylaw is changed. Period. It does not matter if he apologizes, does community service, wins some online fan poll or whatever. At this time, there is absolutely no room for discretion, probably because it concerns the integrity of the game. IMHO, given the current times in baseball and Bud's generally abysmal performance in protecting the integrity and tradition of the game, the last thing he should do is further diminish the integrity of the game.

See, INELLIGIBLE is what gets me. You can put him in the HOF. Just dont let him have any PARTICIPATION with the game. Ban him from coaching, managing, scouting, etc. But, the all time hits leader, and one of the best players of all time, SHOULD be in the HOF. You can allow him in, without allowing the chance for him to effect the integrity of the game.

I basically agree with Stagger Lee. Rose ought to be in the Hall; I really have no second thoughts on that one. But how do we go from "we can't even have him in the Hall" to "we'll let him manage a major league team again" in one move? At the very least, put him on a probationary period once he makes his deal.

But I want to see him getting inducted into the Hall. And the same year, it's time to put Shoeless Joe in.

Put him in for the hit record, but that's about it, and hopefully include something about him being held out for 14 or so years. No significant jobs though, he can be a clubhouse attendant or greet people at the front door or something.

Except, of course, to Kane.

Actually reading Will Carroll's take on this over at BP, this might be the best result for him. His mechanics were so good and solid to begin with, that made the damage less than it might have been.
