Oh, goodie. This means that it's not just me that got infected with it. At least with me, the only thing that's happening is Norton yelling at me that it's here and won't go away, but nothing's happened in a while.
Sometimes I ask myself why I watch WWE after all the crap it's given me. HLA, necro, HHH, and so on. And then it hits me. That one simple phrase that can be modified and used for anything that gets you down, yet makes you keep coming back.
Every episode has the potential to be the best one ever, and I'll be damned if I'm going to miss it after sitting through this shit.
Here (microsoft.com)'s the official MS site on the worm.
It doesn't say anything about affecting Win98, but that might be one of the OS's Microsoft no longer supports. What's bad though is that it does say the NT 4.0 is affected, but Microsoft can't fix it because the fix would require a major rewrite of the OS.
I'm Mr. Mister. Watch your back, felons! When I get pissed, you get mist!
In fact, it affects all versions of Windows since 95. This information was released along with a lot of "Danger! Wil Robinson! Danger" over a month ago.
Anyone who did not take the time to patch up their system can thank themselves, as always.

Yeah, just download the patch. Even if the worm hasn't infected your computer, when it does, it's capable of blocking your version of Windows from downloading the patch.
Unfortunately, it seems to be getting worse and packing a bigger hit on many computers. 2 days ago, it was only inserting itself into computers as MSBlast.exe, as of today, it could be in a computer under 5 different file names.

I would expand that to say that anyone who willingly installed MS Windows can thank themselves.
'But if one is struck by me only a little, that is far different, the stroke is a sharp thing and suddenly lays him lifeless, and that man's wife goes with cheeks torn in lamentation, and his children are fatherless, while he, staining the soil with his red blood, rots away, and there are more birds than women swarming about him.' Diomedes, The Iliad of Homer
I spent my *entire day* at work curing this viurs for workers and friends. It isn't that hard to fight, but when people download or get the patch via email, and *don't know where they put it*, well it get's a bit annoying.
Why do the hackers do this anyway (probably to fuck with me).
Murphy's Law "The odds of the bread landing buttered side down are directly proportional to the price of the carpet."
At the Best Buy I work at, the computer techs usually see about $600-$800 of revenue daily, most of that Norton installs, Windows updates and various repair/drive installs. $1000 in revenue is something to celebrate.
Today they made $2300. Almost all of that was virus removal.
A wait for setup/Norton install is usually fifteen minutes. Today it was over an hour.
I was on the Internet earlier today and wasn't hit. A few minutes ago I ran the patch just in case.
Whatever happened to the GOOD old days of computer viruses, when you just had to avoid opening email attachments with names like WINBAT32SUPERSEXYHI.exe ... Now, you're potentially screwed just by logging onto the internet!
And another thing; didn't Microsoft offer an automatic update system, where patches (and the like) would automatically download while you were surfing the net? When I first got Windows ME, I remember something being offered, but now I don't remember if it was an "automatic download" or just "automatic reminders" that would pop up when a new patch was available ...

I could be confused (Microsoft doesn't make this any too simple), but I don't think that's "The Patch" -- that one is MS03-010 which is a related precursor. But The Patch for the immediate problem is MS03-026 described at http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp
I'm on Win2000 & got the svchost.exe crash symptoms, rather than the reboot that XP seems to do. Before I got it patched up (knock on wood), I had gotten one of the more advanced versions that the Norton cleanup didn't catch (including some of the stray "TFTP*" files that I've only seen reported in one of the descriptions).

Well, *I* am certainly enjoying all of this, but then again, I'm using a Mac. :)

You CAN use automatic updates with Windows, but it all depends on the user allowing that option. The automatic update will download any critical updates, but its up to the user to install them if I read my help right.
Um, A Fan? Burkett? Excalibur? No? OK, I'll start. Not a bad episode, per se, but the third to last episode should not be spinning its wheels. Other than the end, which was nothing more than a tease for next week, the threat did not feel real.
