WWE is all on this patriotic tip. They also have these anti American "French" guys getting the snot beat out of them, Scott Steiner and Nowinski's debate, Bradshaw and his crap whatever, whatever. That's all well and good.

So why the FUCK are they pushing Randy Orton? That lilly livered piece of coward shit went AWOL from basic training, and WWE is trying to make him some poor excuse for the Rock?!

I am especially pissed off at this being a service member and all. I just don't get it. And they have the audasity to offer "free" events for service members?
How can Vince and CO. look at themselves in the mirror straight faced and do this crap in a time like this? It's just kinda funny they keep this punk around. Tell you what, I'd rather watch a pot head Desert Storm Vet with old ass catch phrases in the ring instead of a yellow spined nerf-neck HOSS Bah Gawd getting pushed to the moon.

But I'm not bitter. Really.

Well, they're trying to make new stars for starters.

I do think that Orton isn't quite at the level to be a main eventer, but they're working on him and we'll see how far he goes. At least they're giving someone a chance, and while he may have been dishonorably discharged (if you're even in the service during basic training), he's not in the military anymore.

Randy Orton is a civilian now. An entertainer at that, and what happened while he was in the basic training shouldn't affect his ability to perform nor any career choices he makes. It also probably has to do with who his father and grandfather are.

And Scott Steiner's rant did more to harm America than anything I've seen in quite some time.

Not to turn this into the Politics forum, but I've been saying the same thing about George W. Bush for years now.

He realized that the Marines weren't for him and he had to get out so he went AWOL, returned, served time in military prison and was discharged.

Why does it make him lily livered if he simply had a change of heart as to what he wanted to do with his life? Or are people not allowed to change their mind? He did what he had to do to get out.

I think it's important to keep in mind that WWE is a wrestling organization, not a political organization. They do the things with La Resistance, Steiner, etc. for cheap heat, not political statements. And they do the things for military just for good publicity. And also remember that 99.9% of the people have no clue about Randy Orton's background.

(And Steiner doing more harm to American? Reality check, Steiner is not in a position to do harm to American, and certainly not through a stupid wrestling promo/skit)

When I looked at the title, I thought it would be about Sable again or something. I can think of a few more annoying hypocritical things we could complain about:

How Jerry Lawler can go from heel to face every week.
How they build up certain matches to be the greatest of all time, only for them to be about three minutes long.
How they hype the men's matches, but when the Women's title is on the line, no hype whatsoever?

This political stuff I'm no expert in, so how about these?

Because there's protocol that is supposed to be followed if someone does have a change of heart. He had other ways to do what he had to do.

So maybe I could have phrased this better, but my heartburn comes from the fact the WWE is all on this ignorant patriotic kick, and may not have looked further into who they may have offended. Trust me, I am not the only one.

So my beef ain't with Orton, but more with WWE.

Sorry all you RNN fans.

Oh, and maybe if WWE gave two craps about some of the most, and at times THE most entertaining segments of the program,, maybe one day we would see the women headline RAW. >:(

How can they use The Coach on RAW and expect people to care about anything? Or how can The King be so unprepared that he didn't know Gail Kim was from Canada? Especially since they profiled her on Confidential. That leads to how do they expect people to follow the product when their RAW announce team doesn't even watch the shows?

Understood. The WWE is hypocritical about a lot of things, there's no doubt about that. I knew Orton left the Marines, but I figured he found out it wasn't for him. I'm a tad more frustrated in that debate with Steiner and Nowinski. I didn't see that, thanks to my little sister, but I did read the recap. I know some people whose opinions are just like Nowinski's. That doesn't make them or him wrong. Whatever. All I'm saying is, I see what you mean.

To add even more politics to the situations. I think that Americans are in general very hypicrtical of France for not helping out with Iraq. The Americans joined WW1 after they had shipd distroyed(about 6 monthes in) and WW2 went on for about a year before Pearl Harbour and the Americans entered.

Now that wasn't meant as a knock on anyone in particular but its a knock on how overly involved in themselves Americans(As a whole) tend to be.

As for the WWE well Stieners debate was a joke, and La Resitance are two guys from Canada.

So since WWE has a few patriotic storylines (well, one that I can think of going on currently), they shouldn't be pushing Randy Orton in a storyline that doesn't have anything to do with patriotism because of his past?

I would agree with the initial sentiment of this thread if Orton had gone AWOL during a conflict which he could have been sent to. Desertion is not something to be taken lightly. Basic training, though, is a different thing. He should have gone through the proper procedures, but bailing on basic is hardly a severe enough crime to justify limiting the man's career possibilities the rest of his life - especially not in a country that has the mentality that rapists, murders, and pedophiles deserve a second chance.

I don't see this as a case of hypocrisy so much as a case of stupidity. Randy Orton, for all this loophole-kinda-sorta b.s. that we're whipping about here to justify his actions, did do one thing we can all agree on. He bailed on a commitment, he backed down. So I should think it's sort of foolhardy on WWE's part to immediately push him just because he's pretty and white. I'm not about to imply that he needs to pay five years of dues, but he hasn't proven anything to anyone, and please don't tell me he's over because he's not. He's about as not over as a person can be when he hangs out with the World Champion all the time. And all this for a guy who has proven his way of dealing with issues is just not showing up? If this was a job at a grocery store, that'd be one thing, but this was a pretty big deal and he didn't handle it in a responsible way.

This is not about me saying he's this and that, and I'm better than him, and let's push someone I like more. I've got nothing against Randy, outside of the fact that I don't find him remotely entertaining. But you have to factor in the way someone's conducted themselves in their lifetime before you give them the keys to the city. You don't just take someone, and because they look good, give them the Christ-push. That's how you make a Goldberg, or even a Big Show, who just in the last few months has started to exhibit genuine desire to improve and entertain, and to stop being a primadonna. Other examples would be the Ultimate Warrior, Lex Luger, who used the words "you see why I wanna quit this shit" during a match.

And for all the potential "new blood" arguments, there's a huge difference between a John Cena and a Randy Orton. One, is just straight-up connecting with audience and has something that people want to see, at least for the time being. That'd be Cena, and his rap gimmick. The other is not connecting with the audience, but that doesn't matter because he will be pushed as if he was anyway. It just smacks of desperation. This whole "looks like a star" thing has blown up in Vince's face a bunch of times, and in the end, he's had to cave in when fans have made choices. Bret over Luger in '94, Austin over 'Taker in '97.
So I guess this is going to be a wait and see type of deal.

To be fair, his going AWOL was just one act. It doesn't set well with me personally but it's hardly enough to imply "This is how he conducts his life."

And he hasn't exactly been given the keys to the city. He's in a stable with two legends but he wins most of his (sporadic) matches on interferance and hasn't held a title. It's debatable how over he is but he's gotten where he is with the fans because of his character / mic work and his physique, both of which are commitments.

>How they hype the men's matches, but when the Women's title is on the line, no hype whatsoever?<

But how is this hypocritical? The women's division has simply never been treated to be as significant to the WWF/E. Women's wrestling has never been an important key to the company, this wasn't even different during the the last major women's division boom (Blayze-Nakano '94), and people have long accepted it. WWE is primarily a men's wrestling federation, in a primarily men's sport.

I don't understand how you can really judge Randy Orton on his personal life when you don't know him personally. If I was in the Armed Forces, I would want people by my side who want to be there on some level. If someone wants to quit, how could I judge them when I don't know whats going on in their head? I don't want to be stuck next to someone who is of unstable mind when there, I want people who uderstand what their there for and who can complete the duties asked of them.

I wouldn't be botherd with someone who quits during training camp, hell it's just like the people who have to be recycled or those who can't get up to snuff after the training. They're not only looking for fit bodies, but fit minds as well. Furthermore when people are young, they do stupid things that they might not do when they are more mature.

If you want to talk smack about his in-ring and on mic talent feel free, but to lash out about personal stuff when most of the circumstances remain unknown is just wrong.

I am only saying he should have gone through the appropriate proceedings. That's only courtesy and respect for the people he committed himself to. There's not much room for the old "mile in another man's moccasins" argument when the corpus delicti is common knowledge like it is here.

Here's the thing: I honestly believe WWE has two separate issues going here.

With Randy Orton, I doubt they really care one way or the other about his military history. They care if he draws money. And most people don't know he went AWOL. I didn't until I read this thread.

If Orton had, say, committed a murder or something, they would probably have to be a bit more careful about employing and pushing him (insert your own Jimmy Snuka comment here). But WWE is not a company about morals; you just have to get past that. If you can't; don't watch. Vince McMahon is not going to change his product to become more socially-concious. Unless, of course, that would sell more tickets.

As for the second issue, their exploitation of the war... well, see my earlier comment. They're doing what they think is trendy with the Steiner, La Resistance and Bradshaw stuff. Is it in good taste? Probably not. But it's still a million times better than the Sgt. Slaughter angle from '91.

Giving free PPV's/tickets to people in the service is also a PR move. Nothing more, nothing less. Right now, supporting the military is the `cool' thing to do, so McMahon is right there. I can't imagine he's doing this out of patriotism. Whether people in the military want or appreciate the free product, I have no idea.

I just think the Randy Orton push is a completely separate deal from the war angles they're pushing right now, at least in their eyes.

Kind of odd the WWE would giveaway a Smackdown result before the Friday airing but I guess they had to make a decision to help sell the PPV.
