Now that it looks like Powell and Armitage will leave before the commencement of the next term. The likely replacements list is interesting as well:

Condi Rice
Paul Wolfowitz
Dick Lugar
Newt Gingrich(?!)

I just can't see Newt trying to tame the bureaucracy in Foggy Bottom...

Not to mention Bush is too damn stodgy to appoint Gingrich. Someone needs to tell him that being friends with your fellow lawmakers is secondary; hiring competent people comes first. It's like the Arlen Specter/Pat Toomey deal in PA. Bush lets this silly "loyalty" towards an incumbent overcome good sense.

The Washington Post appears to have jumped the gun. That said, there is no way in hell Gingrich should ever raise his worthless head again for Republican politics.

Why can't the Republicans come up with someone new, someone who didn't sleep around on his dying wife, or get caught in shady financial dealings? I certainly hope Bush gets re-elected over the current mix of Democratic mopes, but for Pete's sake, now that some of the useless baggage like Strom Thurmond are gone PLEASE don't repopulate the important positions with old garbage.

Stigmas aside, I'd bet that Newt is STILL a tremendous ideas man (MODO).

I'd be surprised to see Gingrich ever pop up again in GOP political circles of power, simply because would have to entirely abandon everything he stood for publicly, as the GOP has gone against everything that he became famous for in Contract With America:

Balanced Budget Amendment - GOP runs up $475 bln debt in 1 year
Free Trade - Steel tariffs go up under Bush
Term Limits - They only leave when they die
Smaller Government - Newt Gingrich, meet the Homeland Security Dept.

Sometimes it astounds me how a party that came to power on one thing can make such a 180 on everything. Bet Bush is glad that Clinton helped fight off the BBA now though isn't he? ;)

We already HAVE term limits if people would get off their ass and participate.

Supporting an incumbent Senator of your own party is good sense. Cases are extrodinarily rare where you wouldn't - usually said Senator has to do something like denouce their party on the floor of the Senate (TM Bob Smith).

Dick Lugar is far and away the best choice out of that bunch if you ask me.

"I'm sorry, I didn't think I was going to talk about 'man on dog' with a United States Senator. It's sort of freaking me out."
