The king of mid-season deals pulled off another steal. They thought nobody would trade with him, but with Cinci commited to a fire sale, Boone's son could be next to go.

This has to be the best deal of the year so far. Jose Guillen was Cincinnati's best outfielder this year even better than Kearns, Dunn, and Griffey. He is hitting .337 with 23 homeruns, lots of runs and RBIs. I know Harang is a very good pitching prospect, but how much pitching does Oaktown need.

Even with Tejada in the dumps, that great pitching with Guillen's great bat is the favorite for the AL Wild Card now.

With Oakland being only 3 games back, and with the way Freddy Garcia and Gil Meche have pitched of late, I'd say the A's have a very strong chance to win the AL West. Of course, the M's are the favorites to land Bret Boone's little brother.

But can he improve five teams with one move? Here's an email from Lee Simins's ATM Reports:

Cubs decide making outs is a really good thing
The other NL Central contenders strengthened themselves when the Cubs acquired CF Doug Glanville from the Rangers for minor league OF Jason Francz and cash.

    Lee

GREATEST EMAIL EVER. That was the actual subject, too.

As for Guillen... well, it's not like Harang was gonna do much for the A's. Harden's probably the 4 now, so who's 5? Or is he just gonna stick as the fifth starter so he doesn't get blown out?

M's maybe snagging Aaron Boone: Should be nice to have someone there at 3B who has more redeeming qualities than "Isn't Jeff Cirillo"?

I'm holding out hope that JD Drew is on the way to Oakland too. With Zito, Mulder, Hudson, and Harden, they could trot just about anyone out there as the #5, so I'd be happy to move Ted Lilly for Drew (as the rumour goes). But Guillen is a great pickup, especially at the expense of a guy who wouldn't be around come playoff time anyway.

I'm thinking Glanville is only there to provide defense and some speed off the bench for the Cubs. I don't see him taking any time away from Lofton. Goodwin's hamstring injury must be worse than originally thought.

Guillen is a great pickup, but let's not overdo it. This year Guillen has looked nothing like his past self. He's 27 years old. Maybe he repeats this performance, maybe he doesn't. Either way, I'm not terribly impressed. Impressed, yes, but not terribly.

Also, the acquisition of Guillen will hardly turn around the fortunes of an entire team. You think that one decent bat, in a lineup with little to no protection, will turn the A's into an offensive juggernaut? You think Guillen and Tejada in the 3-4 or 4-5 spots beats Boston's lineup, which is solid 1-9? I'm not willing to declare any of the AL playoff spots a lock at this point, especially the Wild Card. The West is still in contention, the East is in contention, and all four teams (Yanks, M's, A's, BoSox) are pretty evenly matched. Jose Guillen hardly makes it a decisive A's victory.

The problems with the A's bats is none of them are hitting as well as they were expected to, and they can't hit lefties. Chavez isn't hitting, Tejada isn't hitting. Durazo is hitting, but not flashing as much power as expected. Dye wasn't hitting before he got hurt, and now he's hurt. Hernandez is hitting about as well as expected. They're not getting first base production out of first base, but they expected that coming in. They've gotten little production out of second base, and with the exception of Eric Byrnes' run before the break, their outfield has been dreadful too. If Guillen can keep up his present pace, he might provide enough protection in the middle of the order. That remains to be seen, however.

I got very disturbed for a moment, as I thought that this thread was about Billy Bean owning my ass, and well, with what he's said about himself since retirement and all....

Seriously though, this is a very good trade for the A's. There's no dominant AL team this year, and that extra bat could be huge in the postseason. Right now there's at least 5-6 legitimate World Series threat teams in the AL.

Which probably botched any chance of the O's being able to dump Tony Batista...bastards.

There's always the Dodgers, if the O's will pick up the bulk of Batista's salary.

EDIT: Of course, Gammons is reporting that the Yankees are going to deal Branden Claussen and 3 million dollars for Boone and LHP Gabe White.

If it's up to me, I'd pay it all just to get something for him.

Perhaps there was a reason after all why Toronto released him in mid season after he hit over 40 home runs.
As for the Guillen trade, the move probably propels the A's to the AL West title. That, and him ending up in Oakland means he doesn't end up in right field in New York.
As for the Reds, I've never seen Gammons as pissed (and I've read, listened to or watched Gammons since the 80's) as he was on Baseball Tonight talking about what a disgrace the Reds are, the fraud Bud Selig is allowing players to be sold, and how it really is sad that people in Cinci are regretting Marge Schott selling the Reds. Ownership really has to be f'd up in order for people to miss Marge.

As a life-long White Sox fan, eventual convert to neutrality re: the other Chicago team, and someone who wanted the Red Sox to win in 1986, I have to say RSN has the most painfully true sig quote i've seen in a while.
