According to NESN play-by-play man Don Orsillo, they traded Phil Dumatrait, of the Sox Saratoga affiliate, and PTBNL for Reds' pitcher Scott Williamson.
That makes Kim, Sauerbeck, and Williamson, all in a few weeks. Do they make Williamson the closer and move Kim back to the rotation, where he has, in his brief stint, been less effective? We shall see. Sure beats Armando Benitez and Jesse Orosco, though.
In other news, those other Sox, the White ones, got Scott Schoenweis.

And in other other news, Seattle gets Rey Sanchez (why?) from the Mets, while the Royals get Graeme Lloyd from the same Mets.
Fucking Mariners, not getting the fucking left handed reliever.

Originally posted by Big BadThis trade is odd. Kim has been doing a fine job as closer so far, so maybe the Sox just want Williamson to set up.
Bingo.
If the BoSox can get a starter in the next day and a half, thats exactly what will happen. If they don't, Kim may return to the rotation, Williamson could close, and Mendoza would return to the 'pen. Of course, thats just wild speculation right now.
Theo has acquited himself nicely, I think.

Also remember that by getting him, the BoSox do two things:
1. Make sure the Yankees don't get him.
2. Force the Yankees to make another move to get a relief pitcher(even if they don't need one) thus depleting their resources to compete with the Sox for other talent.

Well, the Yanks got Dan Miceli, and I doubt that he is much of a 'depletion of resources,' especially since they just dealt Mondesi's $11 million dollar albatross to Arizona. NY also got Bret Prinz in that deal, so their pen gets another arm.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays continue to blow game after game due to their prenaturally shitty bullpen. Sob.

The Yankees designated Micelli for assignment on Friday, and then moved him to Houston for player to be named later/cash. The smart move for Boston is the keep Kim as closer, and have Williamson, Timlin, Embry and Sauerback as your 4 7th-8th inning pitchers, using Todd Jones in the 6th and occassionally 7th, and having Chad (this bullpen by committee thing was very successful for us on those 100 loss Milwaukee teams) Fox in the mop-up role. As for the great Don Orsillo, he cemented his legacy of being a play by play man who has no clue of what is going on in a game when he miscalled Bill Mueller's second Grand Slam as a 3 run homer (including giving an updated score using 3 instead of 4), showing once again that he is an idiot.

If I am not mistaken, Toronto was paying 7 of the 11 million, so it wasn't an albatross for the Yanks. Bret Prinz, on the other hand, is now pitching for the Clippers.
The Reds told the Yanks that Williamson would cost them Claussen and $$$. If that is the case, who the fuck is Phil Dumatrait?
Also heard speculation last night on the radio about the Yanks possibly dealing Benitez elsewhere, especially if Florida chickens out of the race and has to dump Ugeth, which apparently they still might.

Speaking of trades and Sox (of the White variety), I almost screamed in the middle of a commuter train this morning when I saw that the White Sox had been pursuing Sid Ponson, but the deal fell through because the Orioles wanted Joe Crede. Joe Crede, who is hitting .231 with 11 HR, 44 RBI and a .284 OBP. Joe Crede who often looks more confused at the plate than Shaq at the free throw line. They wouldn't give up this defensive chasm and offensive mediocrity to rent a guy who would give them a rotation that would have to be considered the equal of any AL team. I am now going to go wait at 35th and Shields to stab Kenny Williams in the eyeball with my unused 2000 ALCS tickets.

Florida is 1 out of the Wild Card race and is flying. I seriously doubt they are going to dump Ugie unless they suddenly go in the tank, and the fact that they are trying to get funds for a stadium makes it even less likely they will raise the white flag. BTW, Dontrell Willis vs. Randy Johnson on the Deuce tonite. Should be one of the more entertaining pitching match-ups of the year. Anyone wonder what the odds were 2 months ago about using entertaining match-ups of the year and Florida Marlins together? Dumutrait was a former #1 pick by the Red Sox 4 years ago who has never pitched above A ball. And, don't forget, the Red Sox gave Cincy $1.2 million in the deal as well. Considering Boston has been able to swing deals with Pittsburgh and Cincy under the Yankees noses, perhaps there is a small market backlash against the Yankees payroll. Either that or all the duds the Yankees have traded over the past few seasons causes teams to be wary of their farm system.

If it makes you feel better, I almost screamed a minute ago when I read your post indicating we might be interested in Crede....yikes.

The Red Sox got they better deal. Williamson is better than Benitez. In fact Williamson is a better closer than Kim. Kim has 5 wins, 8 losses, 6 saves, 3.47 ERA. Williamson has 5 wins, 3 losses, 21 saves, 3.19 ERA.
This trade is bad for the Yankees and very bad for my fantasy team. Williamson was my top closer.
BTW: How is either Boston or Cincy a "small-market" team?

Cincy is small to (if your generous) mid market, with 40% of their payroll tied up in Griffey and Larkin. As for Kim's numbers, remember he was a starter up until July 1st. Since becoming closer, he's 6 out of 7 in save opportunities with a 1.15 ERA.

Yes, but how did Kim do against the Yankees on the weekend? That guy is worthless against the Bombers, hence Williamson. I don't know how excited I'd get about a guy who is 21/26 in save opportunities in a zero pressure situation like Cincinnati.

Not enough duds to demand Claussen, however. I think for George, the money wouldn't have been the problem.
That did make me think though - how many duds other teams ended up with. I have heard how the Yanks inflate their prospects. I look around the league for pitchers the Yanks traded as prospects or just young pitchers in general, and there are barely any. Milton, DeJean, Armas Jr, Day, Westbrook...

Kim struggles against the Yankees. Then again, the great Mariano Rivera has blown 5 saves against Boston in the past 2 seasons, so perhaps that is becoming more of a wash than it used to be.

Armas Jr was on his way to a breakout season this year before he injured his shoulder. He's been a decent guy the last two years, always on the cusp of stepping it up, and then this happened.

jfkfc/redsoxnation: Don't forget that the Reds had scouts at a game where Dumatrait was pitching. He threw a perfect game (or at least a no-hitter). Think that may have had something to do with it?

Regular season--One win, one loss, 2 saves. Not bad.
Postseason-- 2 BS, 1 loss. and then a large amount of it was due to the offense not being able to add to the lead or tie it.
and IIRC, Williamson was great in '99 co-closing with Graves, so he can handle changing roles.
