With the first truly born-again president in charge of what has been called a crusade at times, I think this is an interesting take from the UK on the idea of the United States believing itself to be something of a religious movement as well as a nation (guardian.co.uk)

I think this is useful in that it shows how what is seen as patriotic fervor and totally average and normal belief can be seen outside of our borders.

I think this is, at best, a curious stretch and at worse and accusation of this country and administration of embracing fascism....

I'd have to say "Yeah, that's pretty much what it feels like sometimes." While saying that America itself is the new religion is one that I haven't heard before, the idea that we treat the ideals of Democracy, Liberty, and more recently Patriotism as our religion is nothing new to me. Maybe pairing the word fascism with it helps make it clear how the patriotic, "America - Love it or leave it" statements seem to those who don't agree with the President.

Though, come to think of it, next time somebody complains to me about the liberal media, maybe I should just say, "That's America. Love it, or leave it!"
