Hey all,

A friend of mine told me that he's interested in getting into wrestling, so (being the nice guy that I am), I offered to lend him some tapes.

Here's where I need your help. I was wondering what stuff you'd think about lending a new fan.

Things to consider:

- he likes the wrestling side of our sport, but is still a sports entertainment mark

- he's seen some recent WWF stuff, as well as some of Wrestling's Most Horrific Moments (a tape I have) and a Misawa-Kawada AJPW strong style match

Any ideas?

I'm sure someone will mention it, but track down The Best of J-cup. The one with Beniot as the Pegasus. Even though I live in Japan, I'm not good with Puro Resu at all. So I forgot the title. But it was really damn good.

I'd recommend NOT starting him with the best stuff you can think of... if you have a scaled of 1-10... start him with your stuff that is a 6 or 7 on your scale.

Work your way up to the 10 stuff. It's easier to appreciate really good stuff after you have seen good matches, and you won't blow the guy out of the water and set his expectations too high at first.

Royal Rumble 2000, and Wrestlemania X-7

2000 had the Foley/Hunter streetfight and the Hardy/Dudley table match. The Foley Retirement angle was IMHO the greatest "sports entertainment" angle of all time, and the table match was a great high spot match, even better than the first TLC, IMO.

Royal Rumbles in general have great undercards for some reason.

Wrestlemania had everything you could want, good technical wrestling (Angle/Benoit) good brawling (Taker/HHH) big stars (Austin/Rock) great holy-$#!^ moments (TLC2, Raven/Big Show/Kane.) And the rest of the card is really good too, except for everything involving Right to Censor, they were on their last legs here.

Yun beat me to it. I was going to suggest Royal Rumble 2000 as well. For some reason, every single time I've put that show on around people who can be considered casual, or even non-fans, they stick around to take a peak. It's got a bit of everything for everyone.

Not surprisingly, I would recommend classic old stuff, like Crockett NWA, Bill Watts Mid-South or World Class. Mid-South was great for tremendous in-ring action, as well as great storylines. World Class, during the height of the Von Erich-Freebird was probably the best stuff in the US at the time.

Of course, stuff from Japan is great. Rather than get a "best of" tape (like the J Cup or DreamSlam), get a month or two worth of TV, so you can see a wide variety of people. If they like a little sizzle with the steak, go with old New Japan (91-96) or current Toryumon.

And, don't forget Mexico. If you have Galavision, watch CMLL on Tuesday nights. If not, track down the first CMLL PPV from 2000 or the world famous AAA PPV from 1994 with Art Barr and Eddy Guerrero vs. El Hijo Del Santo and Octagon.

If you are going to do RR2K, I would highly recommend editing out the Miss Royal Rumble Contest. At least the part immeadiatly after Mae Young comes in.

Yeah, it's Super J Cup '94, and I've got it.

I reckon that might be a little to "what the fuck?" to show a casual fan, though. This probably sounds hypocritical after I said that I showed him Misawa-Kawada (from '99). Maybe one day he'll get to see the greatness which is Japanese junior wrestling.

I would actually show him some more mainstream stuff. The "classic old" matches are going demonstrate some good wrestling, but without all of the big production I don't know if you could hook a new fan. Get into all of that later.

I would recommend one each of the "Big 5" WWF pay-per-views to familiarize him...show him a Wrestlemania (definitely X-7), a Summerslam (Bret/Bulldog from Wembley?), a Survivor Series (the Undertaker's debut or the Montreal Screwjob for history's sake), a Royal Rumble (93, when Flair won...lots of amazing old-school wreslters in it, or 2000), and a King of the Ring (recommendation, anyone?)

I'd also show him the Michaels/Taker and Foley/Taker Hell in the Cell matches, the Razor Ramon/Michaels ladder matches, and the Ultimate Challenge.
I think all of this would be a good WWF primer (can't recommend any other stuff, because WWF is all I've really ever watched except nWo-era WCW).

Have fun! Let him mark out instead of being to "smarty" at first.

Thanks for the help here, guys.

I was actually thinking of RR 2000 after I posted the first message. After seeing the replies, Rumble 2000 it is. At least, for the start...
