Okay, this sort of springs out from the piracy thread...but there are a lot of crap movies out. But, there's also a lot of good movies out, too. So, I'd like everyone who sees a film that makes them go "Wow, I like movies" to just post what the film was and maybe talk about it a bit. This way, we can all know what films suck and which ones to look for.

Some films I've seen this year that were good:

Finding Nemo
Bend It Like Beckham
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The Hulk
X2: X-Men United
The Matrix: Reloaded
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Daredevil
Old School
Phone Booth
Confidence
Identity
The Italian Job
Down With Love

Best o' the year so far:

Hulk-So majorly underrated for being too intelligent-I say Bravo for doing something different with a comic book adap.
Phone Booth-Fantastic unpretentious entertainment with an excellent lead performance by COlin Feckin' Farrell.
City Of God-Jesus, you must see this film. Believe everything the critics say-just, wow.
Identity-Great cast, intriguing premise.
Wrong Turn-A supremely well-made, nasty-as-Hell li'l horror.
X2-The other end off the superhero spectrum from Hulk-just kick-ass quality.
Daredevil-Burton's Batman reborn.

Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns! I'm a huge nerd! YAY!

Yeah, on the off chance you're a They Might Be Giants fan, which is, based on screen names, at least two of you, and on the off-chance this movie actually plays somewhere in or near your hometown, you've got to see it. If you're not a They Might Be Giants fan, this will likely bore the living hell out of you. But I got my money's worth.

I really wanted to see Whale Rider. Everyone who saw it at our theatre just raved about it, but it was only released here for one freakin' week. I might have to trot down to the Uptown and check it out. City of God is another film I've gotta see.

I don't have a top 3 like one would normally make (though I think that will change when I see 28 Days Later) so this will be my 2 favorite movies of the year.

Phone Booth was a terrific and innovative movie, with an awesomely original premise, and it was pulled off perfectly on all accounts. Colin Farrell wins my 2003 Academy Award for best actor..........if not for...

Narc, and Ray Liotta. He and Jason Patric were both tremendous in this incredibly intense cop movie, and I rate it as far and away the best movie of 2003. I'm shocked no one's mentioned it. Ray Liotta definitely gave the performance of the year to this point.

X-E's co-Worst Poster of all time! Jkyle.com says:

Forget this is me saying this,
but the best indie film you haven't seen this year is called "Charlotte Sometimes" and if you can't see it near you, it's out on DVD in September and you can find it HERE for under $14 with free shipping. The synposis doesn't quite capture how beatiful and character driven this is. I saw it at the HIFF alongside "Bowling for Columbine", "Knocking on Heaven's Door", and "Millenium Actress" and I have no problem telling you how easily it hangs in with such amazing company. In the order in which I've seen these movies this year:

City of God
Cowboy Bebop
Daredevil
X2
T3

Ok, so those are also the ONLY movies I saw in the theater this year, but, I go out of my way to only see the movies I know I'm going to enjoy, and even then I miss a few I was meaning to see (i.e. Matrix 2, Hulk, Bruce Almighty). Actually, I'm not as gung-ho about going to movies as I used to be.

It ain't often that Mrs. Dunk and I get to the movies, what with the cost of babysitters and what not, but we just got back from our first movie of the summer - "Pirates of the Caribbean" - and we thought it was great. We also want to see "Seabiscuit" but we are going to have to wait to see that one since our babysitter is off to field hockey camp for the next two weeks.

The other movie that I am looking forward to is "Home Room" - www.homeroommovie.com - which opens in NY, LA & Denver on September 5. It's the first effort of my younger brother's fledgling production company and well worth the time if you happen to be in one of those cities that weekend.

(This has been the first of what will most assuredly be many shameless plugs for the movie between now and then)

edit seconds after posting - it would certainly help if their website hadn't just crashed....

I thought National Security was seriously lacking in the laughs department. It also didn't help that I wanted to kill Martin Lawrence's character for 3/4's of the movie.

Well, if I had to pick an Oscar list right now, my Best Pictures would be...

Finding Nemo
Shanghai Knights
Old School
Phone Booth
Bend It Like Beckham

Not exactly a stellar group, but c'mon, it's summer.

I'll have to second the Hulk...I really don't see why the movie got the criticism it did. The "Hulk didn't have enough facial expressions which made us feel for him" doesn't really hold too much water, although I agree that area of the CGI could have been a little better.

Of course I also think the only truly believable CGI is still in Jurassic Park.

Just saw Seabiscuit...phenomenal film. Great story, spot-on acting, and lots of cool horse-racing scenes. All-in-all, a great use of two and a half hours. See it!

Out of all the movies released this year, I only saw two:

The Matrix Reloaded- Despite what a lot of people said, I enjoyed it a lot.

Old School- Funny movie. Will Ferrell rules, of course. Even Kim from 24 was pretty good.

Pirates was great, lots of fun. Johnny Depp is seriously underrated.
Legally Blonde 2 was disappointing as I am a huge fan of the first one and Mark Platt films in general, but it was still ok.
I thought the Recruit was good.
I have long term loss of short term memory so I can't remember what other movies i've seen this year.

"Identity" sucked a cheetah's dick. It really, really pissed me off for some reason. I mean, more than a bad movie should. I just felt so damned cheated by the ending.

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
I mean, what the hell. We're supposed to forget all that time and emotion we invested in these stupid characters (admittedly not much), and just forget it when we discover the whole frickin' movie was a hallucination? And then they depart from the stupid hallucination angle at the end? That was almost schizophrenic. "It's a mystery slasher flick! It's a psychological thriller! No, it's a slasher flick again because THE KILLER IS ON THE LOOSE!" To hell with the whole thing, I say.

Minus that asinine rave scene, I dug the Matrix. Old School and Bruce Almighty both get a thumbs up from me, though said thumb is a bit higher for Bruce Almighty. Pretty poor summer movie season on the whole, though, in my humblest of opinions.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Pirates was fun. But what the hell was up with Johnny Depp at the end? I missed how that whole thing went down.

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
About him being cursed, I mean. Was it because he had been handling the coins before his duel with Gary Oldman?

Dig that spoiler tag.

You're pretty close...

There was a close-up of him pocketing one of the coins when he was "aligning" with Captain Barbossa (played by Geoffrey Rush, not Gary Oldman, btw). Since he was stealing a coin, he was thusly cursed.

28 Days Later was probably the most fun I've had at the movies this year.

X2 was okay, a little underwhelming. I don't know what people saw in the Hulk. I thought it was pompous crap.
