Hey, lookit me! I've got a giant bug up my ass again!

THIS IS NOT A CHATROOM. This is a message board. This is a message board that I would like to have LOTS of people use. If I come on and see that there have been 300 posts in the past 24 hours, I would HOPE that that is closer to, say, a hundred people putting up three posts each than, say, two people putting up 150 posts.

If you find that you and one other person have gone back and forth for three or four rounds in ten minutes or less, that's probably a good indication that you should take it to ICQ or AIM, because it's REALLY, REALLY ANNOYING to the people who come by a few hours (or days) later to have to slog through your "real-time" discussion.

While I am looking for the world record in pageviews and visits, I am NOT looking for the world record in posts. I STRONGLY prefer *quality* of content to *quantity* (despite some of the crap I've "published" on the site proper). If my encouragment to *think before you post* is too subtle for you, you will find me being less subtle. This may cause you to hate me for the rest of my life, but I hope you understand that while it may seem to you that I'm being personally offensive, I (usually ) mean no offense.

I AM A DICTATOR! Now, usually I'm a benevolent dictator, but that doesn't mean I'm any less a dictator. Hey, at least I'm up front about it. If I don't like what I'm seeing, I'm gonna say something, and if it keeps happening, I will use my iron will to make you so unhappy you leave and never come back. Of course, I'd LIKE for you to come back...just be less damn annoying when you come back! That ain't so bad when you really think about it.

Now, even given that I AM a dictator, my intentions are still pretty good - I want a place where people who visit my site can show up and talk about things. In a perfect world, there'd be a lot more talking about the site, but I realise that that ain't much of a starter on most days, for whatever reason. I also know that people like to personally email authors instead of leaving public comments, and that's cool too.

I try to keep the subject matter on the forums pretty broad because I'd like to keep the membership pretty broad. If I sense trends that are limiting, I try to weigh in and let it be known. Again, this can be perceived as incredibly egomaniacal and offensive, but believe me, if you ever got to know me, you'd know that it...well, I suppose it IS at that. ;-)

The reason this board is named "Wienerville" is I expect that there will be a lot of wieners around - message boards attract wieners. The ezboard, good God - if you were there, I don't have to tell you about it. It's really a paradox: I enjoy having the feedback and discussion that a message board provides available to me, but at the same time I so often find myself thinking SHUT UP, JUST SHUT UP whenever I'm on a message board.

Part of this is 'cause I'm REALLY REALLY OLD, at least as far as this corner of the 'Net is concerned - get on Delphi and it's all 15 and 16 year olds, so it's no surprise that a fogey like me can get all frumpy and grumpy. That's probably why my attempts at shaping this board usually end up in sympathy to the people closer to my age (and above! Heaven forbid!) and why the ultimate "product," I think, tends to read more mature. These are the people who set the examples, chillen...if you're one of those revolutionary youth, ye best be fightin' the power somewhere else because it'll only end in tears if I start cracking the whip.

Well, hell, *I* don't know where I'm going with this. It's just that I felt like it was time to put on the "brutal sumbitch" hat again and make sure that I was so vague that any true message I may have had would go completely missed, especially by the people I was targeting in the first place. ;-)

Now despite everything I've said above, I *am* receptive to constructive criticism if you actually want to bring it up. Of course, I think it only fair to also tell you that I am far less receptive to constructive criticism disguised as outright flames, as well as constructive criticism on some other board I don't read forwarded to me by third parties. You CAN leave me private messages, though, and I'll keep our talks as private as you wanna keep them - or not, if you don't.

OH! And I want more SUCKING UP TO ME! C'mon, where's MY....no, I don't even want to say it for fear it'll actually HAPPEN, and then it won't be funny at all. Those people can stay latched onto their deitys of choice, miles away from this board and blissfully ignorant.

Final note is another repetition: if you're being shy, stop! I want to hear what YOU have to say more than the guy with 400 posts - believe me, we already know EVERYTHING that THEY think so bring us YOUR opinion instead! ;-)

Edit: Oh, and if someone having 380 posts in a month pisses you off, you'd fucking go insane on the PVP forums. There's people over there that average 100 posts per DAY. :)

Well, that's why he's the self-admitted KING of the Wieners.

I think the experience-points-and-ranks-for-posts thing may be encouraging some to be prolific. Hell, I think I post too much sometimes and I'm not even in the top 30, and splitting my Year in Quotes 2001 submissions into months is the main reason I'm close to that level. I get the feeling that some people throw their two cents into every thread to rack up points as much as to make a relevant point, however.

(Speaking of Year in Quotes 2001, I have a combined version that I've HTML-ized that I can send you, if you'd like.)

I spend ten hours per day at my job with nothing better to do than read and reply to message board comments. I hate most websites, and really only read material from Slash, Wienerville, and Weekly Visitor. I'm not making an excuse, oh wait--I am.

I don't like the back and forth convos either, but I do like to chime in with a stupid one-liner every now and then. The point is while most of my time spent on the message board is just lurking around and reading, I tend to make a lot of posts just because of the amount of time I spend here.

It seems like I go in a pattern. I'll spend a lot of time here for a few days, and like Shane said I post a lot simply because of all the time I spend here, then I'll be very busy for about a week and not even visit the board. So I wind up posting in bursts, then going days without posting at all.

Is 295 posts in 47 days a lot to you CRZ? I'm at a little more than 6 per day, which doesn't seem like much, but I'm like 10th on the Wienerlist in total posts.

Do you mind if I ask you when this 300 posts was hit?

I'm guessing last night. By my estimate we probably had around 200 posts dealing JUST with No Way Out and its repercussions on WrestleMania. If this is a board, about wrestling, around to facilitate discussion, and there's an event worthy of discussion, I wouldn't be all that surprised to see that post cout go WAY the hell up.

That having been said, yes, I understand what you're saying, CRZ. Any other night, it may have been just as bad for altogether different reasons.

Take note how many of those posts were "about No Way Out" and how many were actually about No Way Out. Maybe that only makes sense in my head. And yeah, I know I'm not any better by posting this.

There's a reason why I don't bother with wrestling boards in general--they're unreadable, inhospitable and out of control. Except for this one. It was a very pleasant surprise to find one with a maturity level over 14. You keep on cracking that whip, CRZ.

This may sound silly, but I think if there's a max number estabished, I'd like it to be a little higher than 15. That's aboutone post per day in each topic area.

I may not like posting all the time in the actual wrestling forums, but I do post regularly in the off-center ones. I would say it's not out of the realm of possibility to post 15 times in just the sports forums in one day.

No, see, I plucked that number out of thin air as an example. My POINT, which appears to have been lost, is I would rather hear from LOTS of people posting A FEW messages than HARDLY ANY people posting TONS of messages.

I have no problems with a million post thread if a million people contributed. If it's two or three, then there's a definite problem there. Is that any clearer?

There's a wide variety of topics, though. I think someone who tends to post more [like me] and covers several different areas on the board is going to have more posts.
Maybe there could be a limit on posts within a topic or area of the board, but not one on the board as a whole.

I've been on a lot of boards through the years, and there's always a group of people who post more than others. That's just the nature of the beast. The majority of the people registered don't do the majority of the posts.

All that being said, people having real time discussions via forum posts is definitely something that should be discouraged. I haven't seen it, but there are a lot of places in Wienerville I've never been.

I like it here...this is the only wrestling board I've ever been inclined to partipate in, and really the only board of any kind that has a more or less open membership. The other boards I'm on are small and only have maybe 30-40 members, and only around 10-15 regular posters.

hey CRZ... i apologize... i know my post count is WAY up there... but honestly i'm like a few others and spend a lot of time on here during the day at work.... i post on almost all of the sports forums and sometimes in the random board... and of course in the wrestling forums... i dont participate in the real time discussions (what's the point when people have AIM and such?) although i have been guilty of adding a opinion here and there when i see what someone wrote.... unfortunately i'm going to post more than the guy who can only come on here for maybe 10 minutes a day.... and i agree with you i would like to see a lot more of their opinions... it makes for some interesting reading...

I recognize the irony of posting again to explain why I post so much, but I'm going to ignore it. A couple of things:
- As others have said about their situations, I have a job where I work for a couple minutes at a crack usually, and then I spend the rest of my day cruising the internet. So it's either this or maxing out my credit card on Amazon.com.
- To add onto that, I tend to sleep very little most of the time, so late at night I find myself crawling around. The combination of these things means that while most people likely read a couple of threads that seem like the most interesting to them, I find myself reading every single damn thread on here, and being surprised by how many of them I find myself interested in.
- Again, like others, I tend to post all over the board. I would guess that no more than half my posts are in the wrestling area. I know I have posted a lot in the sports areas, the music area, and in the random area. So even if I end up posting just one thing in each area, if I find myself saying something in wrestling, random, football, baseball, and music, that's 5 posts in one day.
- As for other people posting more, I agree wholeheartedly. I know I try never to post anything which might make me seem like I'm important because I have lots of free time on which to post on a msg board. And I do try not to have real time conversation on the board, and if I'm having a long thread with someone I have tried to take it to private msg. But others are correct, some people are just more talkative than others. If you feel you need to set a max # of posts, or perhaps more equitably, a max number of posts per board area per day, hey, it's your board, you gotta do what you gotta do.

There, I feel better now.

While I think my tolerance is waaaaaay higher than yours, I tend to agree with you Z. The truth is that my urge to respond has either declined in the last two/three months OR (more likely) there just hasn't been that much here that inspires me to respond to it. Now lord knows, I've been as guilty as anyone for posting jokes that only I get, or dragging a conversation into a totally wacky direction or trying to make the conversation al about me, but I try to resist doing that until I can work into a conversation where it seems relevant. Lord knows when Guru posted his plea to Jobbers (while I was still a jobber, mind you) I nearly responded, "Hey some of us believe in quality over quantity!" Then the moment passed. Not to mention that I realized that I was hardly the person to take that position/make that comment.

Now if I was cranky sumabitch who was trying to really get offensive, I would say that some people in this lil ol community tend to read something and hit the reply button before what they read has a chance to percolate up to their centres of reason. Personally, I prefer to wait until I know that it's a bad idea when I post a reply. Makes the inevitable beatdown so much more anti-climatic.

Oh and ain't nothing wrong with the host of the party setting a few ground rules. If Hefner asks you to leave the pink flamingos on his front lawn alone, than damn it you just leave them pretty birds be if'n you want to keep your invitation to the grotto open.

I'm a little lost on the specifics of this problem. Let me see if I've got it right.

From what I gather from this board, there are essentially three kinds of threads.

1. The stuff that's mainly in the non-wrestling boards, which tends to be 4 or 5 people posting several times each over an extended period about something specific. While people generally post several times, they all tend to be unique and mildy insighful posts. Only 4 or 5 people post because only 4 or 5 people care about the issue. For instance, I'm guessing everyone who watches "Oz" has posted on the "Oz" thread. It's just not that many people. You aren't going to have 100 people posting once in these kinds of threads.

2. The "Question and Answer" threads. "Who's your favorite Champ?, Why do Billy and Chuck suck?, what are your PPV predictions?, etc. These are almost always "100 people posting once" threads.

3. The "let's talk about a show" threads. I think these are the ones that get on people's nerves, and are the "let's go back and forth in real time and say stuff that's obvious and nobody cares about." Maybe just shutting down the board Monday after 9 Eastern and Thursday after 8 Eastern would be a solution.

I find myself writing something and then saying "fuck it, this is dumb" quite a bit. Probably this is a good thing.

I have to say though, I do write out my goofy-ass theories a lot also. I even got a "did you actually bother to read this before you posted it?" from CRZ on my Nation re-unification theory. However, I have two things in my defence when I do this.

1) I try to post something that may be goofy and urealistic, but is at least a unique idea.
2) I try to stay on topic in the thread. I mean, my Nation re-unification theory was in the "Will the NOD get back together" thread.

I think these are two big things to keep in mind while posting. I'd rather hear 100 unique ideas from one poster than 100 posters each saying the same thing.

In closing, I think this Board is really doing a great job. I mean, for every instance of "Geez, will you please shut the hell up" there's probably 50 of "OK, I guess that wasn't a complete waste of the ten seconds I spent reading it." That's a pretty good ratio if you ask me.

Well I'm just as guilty as anybody, and I apologize. But I also agree with Madame Manga...This is the only wrestling board (hell, the only BOARD) I belong to, for the same reasons.

Ironically, one of my favorite parts of Wienerville IS a continuing conversation...the "as it happens" threads that have started popping up during RAW and the PPV's (but never Smackdown for some reason). Those online jump in with their thoughts as the show runs. I assume that doesn't really apply to the whole Manifesto (whereas my brilliant and insightful "that is SO true" post in the Rush thread is a prime example of what's not right in Wienerville.)

We really do appreciate the boards, the site, and especially your recaps, Z. We're all happy little trees.

The reason they rarely happen during Smackdown is that alot of us already know what's going to happen. It takes away from that "analyze things as they happen" idea.
