I thought Coach did an admirable job calling RAW, especially the Y2J-HBK match, despite the King's blatant attempts to undermine him.

As I said last week in the RAW thread, WWE needs to move towards the future and leave J.R. and the King in the pasture.

Unless WWE plans to have Lawler or J.R. wrestle Coach (which would be completely asinine), there is no reason for Lawler to make Coach look like a jackass. Heel play by play announcers just don't work. Example:Jim Ross.

I thought it was great when Lawler kept on digging into Coach during the Y2J-HBK match for taking advantage of his good "buddy" J.R.'s misfortune and Coach gave him a little something back.

Coach asked King if he even knew what "bling-bling" means. And Coach then said, "Of course not, only hip people know what that means."

King then attacked Coach again for calling a maneuver a toss. King cited that J.R. would never call the move a toss. The move in question was when Y2J had HBK in a side headlock and HBK dropped to his back and rolled Y2J behind him. If that's not a toss I don't know what is because it certainly couldn't be characterized as a throw due to there being no force. It also couldn't be called a roll up because HBK didn't try to pin him.

Soon thereafter, King told Coach that he should call the match a "slobber-knocker" even though there hadn't even been one punch yet thrown in the match.

And King also went out of his way to call out Coach for saying "vulnerability spot" when referring to HBK's back. Why point out someone's bad grammar. And not just once, several times. If someone pointed out J.R. and the King's bad grammar during a RAW telecast, the critique would last longer than the show. The quote by Coach wasn't even that bad and would have gone unnoticed if not pointed out multiple times.

Through all this B.S. Coach called one hell of a match. To all the critics that say he doesn't put over the importance of a match or get excited, listen back to his call of that match, but try to ignore the once enjoyable (although far too many years ago to still be employed) Kingfish.

To me, it seemed that Lawler was plauing the part of the dickish heel commentator/old guy who's all sad about missing his ebst friend whom he's closer to than most gay couples. But, Lawler usually is an annoyance and a large stumbling block on the road to respectable women's matches. Thus, let's look at the latest Heat that I had the opportunity to watch. Coach called a Rico-Val Venis match with about the same enthusiasm asthe Y2J-HBK match. I was glad to see Coach helping Linda McMahon and telling everybody what had happened because it meant that I didn't have to hear it.

Sometimes I ask myself why I watch WWE after all the crap it's given me. HLA, necro, HHH, and so on. And then it hits me. That one simple phrase that can be modified and used for anything that gets you down, yet makes you keep coming back.

Every episode has the potential to be the best one ever, and I'll be damned if I'm going to miss it after sitting through this shit.

I thought the King added a lot to the HBK/Y2J match. Especially the frustration a wrestler feels when he's given an opponet everything he's got and STILL can't put him away. The King has way to much ring knowledge that he doesn't bust out enough because he's always playing the village idiot and trying to act 17 years old. If he stuck to what he knows, that being wrestling he'd be alright.

I think Lawler is at his best (these days, at least) when he's forced to act as play-by-play man as well, such as he did last night.

I'm not a huge fan of his announcing anymore, I admit. But he did as good a job as could be expected while also handling Coachman's duties at the same time.

And for everyone criticizing the fact that he kept referencing JR-Kane... he probably had to! The fact that they gave Lawler and Coachman face time to discuss this development (the segment where Coachman was grinning like an idiot when trying to sell JR's injuries) tells me that McMahon wanted this point to be driven home.

Anyways, I think Lawler did an 'okay' job last night. But it's really interesting how bad announcing can affect how you enjoy the show, at least for me....

Lawler & Coach was really pissing me off during Jericho/ Michaels match. I was ready to get so into it and they did everything in their power to make me not care about the match. It drove me crazy... You have a rematch for what I considered Match of the Year (their WM match), you build this for 2 weeks. Two popular characters. And all King & Coach will do is play up their bitching at each others commentating. It wasn't even funny, it was just annoying "Your not JR" "Please say Slobberknocker" "You don't care about JR" It's like SHUT UP ALREADY what is the point of it!?

Lawler getting me pissed off and unlike usual it has nothing to do with women.

I say get rid of the King and bring in The Cat. Can you imagine the banter between him and J.R.?

Seriously though, Lawler is starting to grate on me. He kinda keeps moving between heel and face commentator. Not to mention it seems he's catering to the 14-year old male demographic.

The Cat??? All of a sudden this has become the WORST...COMMENTATOR...EVER thread. Oh and there was that part where King wailed on Coach for saying JR was at home and not the hospital.

This angle could only be interesting if Coach turned into the heel play-by-play guy and Lawler became de facto face colour man. After so many years of the heel colour guy and face 'regular' announcers, it might be a neat experiment.

The king really needs to go. I mean, you listen to Tazz who has maybe 20% of the wrestling experience that King has and it is like night and day. King is too concerned with puppies and he just seems like he just isn't really into the show anymore and his idiotic statements are a way of keeping himself amused.

One of my guilty pleasures is when there is a big match going on, JR is at his best, all emotional, and then King says something about puppies or something. JR tears him a new one. I specifically remember JR saying, "The is a wrestling match! I am sure if it isn't about puppies or some other foolishness you aren't interested, so let me do my job!" King was quiet for a couple of minutes and then actually started doing his job.

Coach is better than Michael Cole was at a similiar point of his career. Coach is getting better and I could see him taking a spot on RAW eventually.

He is also world's better when the color commentator converses with him about the angles or the matches instead of cutting him down every 10 seconds.

There is no rapport between Coach and Lawler. And unlike the hostilities between J.R. and Heyman (which were funny and usually somewhat witty) , the hostility seems to be coming from one direction (King) and doesn't add anything to the program.

As I said in last week's RAW thread, Coach is world's better when the color guy is cooperating with him and not fighting him. See: Raven, D-Lo, Al Snow.

Coach would be best off with someone that can connect with today's audience (somewhat current performer) and is willing to help him, rather than criticize stuff that isn't even worth criticizing. See: Coach calling a maneuver a "toss" or using the phrase "vulnerability spot."

And as I said last week Mick Foley(after his short comeback stint) would be the best person for the job due to fans loving anything he says and his willingness to put people over properly. He also had a good rapport with Coach while working on the Fanatix series together.

IMHO I think the WWE should leave Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler, Tazz, and Michael Cole out with the trash. Jim Ross doesn't seem to enjoy the wrestling or the travel, and appears to have forgotten most of the moves. Lawler is a tool, his voice is now horrid and listening to him call a Women's match is ear torture. King knows the moves, but why don't they make him call them?

I can't stand the voice of Tazz, and him and Cole saying "This is Smackdown" three times every match makes me want to puke. And if they have Tazz rip on Cole most of the show, why would that lead us to respect him when his sidekick doesn't? It sounds demeaning, not like throwing jabs at a friend. Cole's voice sucks and they have treated him like a dork forever, that I find it hard to respect him.

Furthermore Al Snow is not projecting his voice loudly enough, and tends to stumble his words. I like how Coach sounds, the WWE should have him study old announce teams from the past to become more knowledgeable of the moves. I would love to see Coach with Paul Heyman, I think the would contrast each other with their style off speaking and give Raw a new edge.

From what I remember, he was approached at the time he retired, but turned it down so he could move to Hollywood.
But it would have been a great idea: JR, King and DDP would have been a fresher and more interesting announce team.

Turning the Coach heel would certainly be interesting, even for only a couple of weeks. It's obvious that SOMETHING has to happen to improve the announce teams and I don't think Vince has a better idea.

Coach is awful. Awful awful awful. JR is certainly past his prime but at least he doesn't make a fool of himself in the booth. Coachman doesn't even realize what he's saying half the time.

"JR is at home right now in the hospital" - didn't realize he'd taken up residency there.

"Both Jericho and Michaels have a great deal of experience, both inside and out of the ring" - I got the sense Coach wasn't talking about *wrestling* outside of the ring...I got the sense Coach didn't know *what* he was talking about.

Lawler was incredibly unprofessional trying to undermine the Coach...but I can hardly blame him either. I wouldn't want to sit next to that case of diarrhea of the mouth either.

It was more like,"JR is in the hospital, back home."

Which was pretty easy to understand:
He's in a hospital in Connecticut.

Coachman is terrible. He may be serviceable as a Heat announcer, but that's only because a.) he can redo his commentary limitless times until he gets it right, and b.) it's only a B-show anyway so there really aren't any angles going on in the ring to worry about getting over.

Jerry Lawler is done. The fans may like him, but that's not adding either to the quality of the program or the number of people who are watching it. His commentary hasn't changed in four years, and while I'm sure there's a joke to be made about how the product hasn't changed in four years either, someone needs to tell Lawler that giggling over the women isn't entertaining.

I don't like Michael Cole as a commentator, but he and Tazz do seem to have a decent chemistry together. Tazz is, and I never thought I'd say this as I hated Taz in ECW, hands down the best announcer in the company.

What to do?

If you need a play-by-play man now, I don't think it would take much money to lure Scott Hudson from TNA. I always thought Hudson was a very underrated announcer who got lost in the Tony Schiavone/Mark Madden struggle to always be heard. In time, I also think that Josh Matthews will evolve into a very solid commentator. Considering he's only been in the announcing game for less than a year and has only had Ernest Miller to work with, he's really not that bad. He knows the moves (more than I can say for anyone but Tazz) and by the background info he's been able to offer on some of the non-WWE guys on Velocity he's shown that if nothing else he's interesting in putting the time in to be prepared for his job and have something interesting to add. He's not ready to show up on Raw next week, but in time I think he could handle the job.

Colour man? DDP would be an interesting choice, but I've always thought that you need a face commentator and heel colour man to add some contrast to the broadcast. Otherwise, as happens on Heat, you tend to get two guys who are basically saying the same thing. Al Snow isn't bad, but isn't great either. I can't get the name Jim Cornette out of my head, even though I know he's working in OVW almost if not exclusively. I'm a big mark for Brother Love so I'd enjoy him on commentary, but I think I'm probably in the minority, in which case Kanyon would be a better choice. Surely he can do more than job on Velocity.

They'd be lucky to draw ECW on TNN numbers. They have no real mainstream stars to draw in non and casual fans. They've got some mildly big stars (Jeff Jarrett, older guys like Vader, Dusty), but nobody that is easily recognizable.
