There are pleanty of people out there that can talk and know about wrestling. It doesn't have to be Heyman that replaces Lawler or even Styles that replaces Cole. I don't see why the options have to be that limited.
One thing that needs to be looked at is Cole wasn't as bad when he had Heyman next to him to call him out on stupid *Colish* comments, even Taz called him out on stupid shit. But Cole and Lawler are death together.
I'm even having a hard time with J.R. lately. Is he really all he's cracked up to be? I don't think so. Is it really THAT HARD to learn the names of certain moves. He just seems lazy and often times sloppy when calling the action. Maybe it's the fact that he's teaming with Lawler again.
Maybe I'm asking too much. I can live with J.R., Cole is so bad he's embarrasing at times, but I don't hate him as much as I hate Lawler, who just refuses to act like a heel and call action in the ring anytime there is a set of tits around...which is now a pretty common thing at ringside .
I've took a couple of days to et around to watching the PPV, so forgive me if this has been said already but did someone tell Lawler that it was suddenly Ok to perve on the boss' daughter? I mean, I have never noticed him talk about Steph quite in that way, to that extent before.
Having said that though, overall his commentary at No Way Out didn't annoy me as much as he usually does.
"Nobody enjoys a good time more than I do, but this business of yours is as legitimate as a three-legged donkey...which of course is illegitimate because as we all know donkeys have four legs."

Any good will I had towards him was ruined in a three week span late 1998. First was the line about Foley winning his first title and how that will put asses in the seats. The second was how he HAD to run to the ring and celebrate with Flair after he beat Bischoff.
I dislike Schivone for those same reasons, but he was a good announcer during the classic NWA period. Though some of the reason he was good was because he was paired with David Crockett, who was terrible--total shill for the faces. A heel announcer works, but a face announcer behaving the same way really doesn't. I was glad when Nikita Koloff gave Crockett the Russian Sickle.
Lawler wasn't bad tonight...maybe they should have some sort of attempt at vehicular homicide every night. The only way I could accept Heyman is if he had no other role in front of the camera. He was terrible during the Invasion period because no matter what the match was, he ended up bickering with JR about the Alliance. Lawler's routine gets old, but I was so glad to see Heyman out of the broadcast booth that it didn't bother me.
I too have noticed that it now seems okay for Lawler to make comments about Stephanie's appearance. Interesting, since only a few weeks ago it was obvious Lawler was holding back.
Bill Savage went over to the (Stu Hart) house and one of the Hart kids was running around with his hair wet. Savage asked why his hair was wet. Stu said, "The little bastard broke a vase this morning, so I stuck his head in the toilet. Want me to show you again?" From the Ring Around the Northwest newsletter
I really, really, really wish I could reference my anti-Lawler thread from the old forums. Feh.
Suffice it to say, Lawler is crap. And, dare I say, I think he is one of the (many) things holding back a successful women's division. We don't need a Benny-Hill-lech pedophile announcer to put the valets over; that's why they wear low cut shirts and short skirts. If he spent half the time he does drooling over them and put the wrestlers over, then maybe he would be bearable.
Heyman actually brought intelligent humor to the table ("the Moile of Masochism!") but is apparently more valuable backstage, and I am good with that. Good writing and bad announcing are better than the other way around.
Does anyone think Lawler could actually pull off being a heel announcer anymore? Or would nobody believe it? I was so hoping when he came back that Monday after Survivor Series and told JR that things were (or were going to be) different that they would be.
I admit to really liking Heyman as well, but maybe that was at least partially because he didn't seem to mind getting under JR's skin.
Does the WWF actually have anyone who acts as a heel announcer/play by play/color commentator?
Let me also mention, that Jericho was awesome on the third mic on Raw Monday. He put over the talent in the ring more than JR and Lawler put together! While putting himself as heel champ over.
I think at No Way Out and to a lesser extent this monday, Lawler was more understated for the most part.. he seemed to be playing down a bit of 'crazy perv uncle Jerry' and to be just trying to announce and push angles, which I really appreciated.. he can get to me, but generally he's at least easy to tune out.. and when he's on, I feel he does add alot.. its just kind of rare now..
